Sixteen GB can be enough for gaming, but it depends on the game and what else your PC is doing. Check memory use while playing your usual games alongside your normal background apps. Consider 32 GB if memory pressure repeatedly coincides with slowdowns; more RAM adds capacity, but it does not guarantee higher average FPS or fix stuttering caused by another component.

How to check RAM use while gaming on Windows

  1. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
  2. Select Performance > Memory. Note total memory use and available memory while your game and the applications you normally keep open are running.
  3. Check during a demanding or troublesome scene, map, or session—not just when the PC is idle.
  4. Open Processes to see which applications are using memory.
  5. Repeat the check during several representative sessions. A single unusually high reading is not enough to establish that you need an upgrade.

Microsoft recommends investigating consistently high resource use, and Steam’s game troubleshooting guidance suggests checking available memory in Task Manager. Steam offers a rule of thumb to try to keep at least 1,000 MB available, but that is Steam troubleshooting guidance—not a universal pass/fail threshold for every game or PC. Steam Support

How to tell whether RAM is causing slowdowns

Memory use near capacity matters most when it repeatedly occurs at the same time as the slowdown you are trying to fix. A high percentage by itself does not prove RAM is the bottleneck. Compare the timing of the problem with memory availability and look for other likely causes, including CPU or GPU load, disk activity, temperature, drivers, game settings, and game-specific issues. Microsoft identifies CPU, memory, and disk usage as useful performance clues. Microsoft’s Windows performance guidance

Windows also reports committed memory, which combines RAM and page-file capacity. The page file can help Windows manage memory, but it is not equivalent to physical RAM performance. Microsoft’s general guidance says, “The more memory a device has, the more it can do at the same time without slowdowns in performance.” That is not a gaming-specific promise that every game will run faster with more RAM. What 16 GB versus 32 GB benchmarks show

Results vary by game and test setup, so benchmark gains should be treated as examples—not predictions for every PC. In PC Gamer’s 2026 tests, Cyberpunk 2077 and Black Myth: Wukong ran similarly with 16 GB and 32 GB in the tested configurations. Stalker 2 and Escape from Tarkov showed better 1% lows with 32 GB in some scenarios. In its RTX 5070 test, PC Gamer measured an 11% improvement in Stalker 2 1% low frame rates with 32 GB. Its Escape from Tarkov test reported a 34% increase in 1% lows, but used training mode with AI bots; the article cautions that live players can increase memory use. PC Gamer’s 2026 comparison

Total workload also affects results. TechSpot describes a case where background applications used 17.8 GB before a game was opened. That is an individual example, not a typical or universal figure. It also notes that game assets intended for graphics memory can spill into system memory in some situations, increasing RAM use. TechSpot’s analysis

These examples do not establish a universal rule that every gamer needs 32 GB or that 32 GB always improves performance. The benefit depends on the game, background workload, and the rest of the PC.

Decide whether to keep 16 GB or upgrade

What you observe Practical next step
Your usual games run acceptably, and representative sessions do not show recurring memory pressure linked to symptoms. Keep 16 GB for now.
Memory repeatedly approaches capacity while you play, and slowdowns recur at those times; or your workload intentionally includes demanding games with mods, streaming, or other memory-heavy apps. Consider 32 GB. The actual performance gain depends on your game and PC.
The slowdown occurs without consistently constrained memory. Investigate CPU, GPU, storage, heat, drivers, settings, or game-specific issues before assuming a RAM upgrade will help.

Check PC compatibility before buying RAM

Do not choose a kit based on capacity alone. Find the exact PC or motherboard model and verify the supported memory generation, form factor, speed, maximum capacity, current module configuration, and whether the memory can be accessed or replaced. Some laptops have soldered or otherwise inaccessible RAM. Microsoft advises checking with the hardware manufacturer for device-specific requirements and added hardware. • G.SKILL Flare X5 Series DDR5 U-DIMM Memory Kit, Model: F5-6000J3636F16GX2-FX5
  • Non-ECC, DDR5 U-DIMM, 288-pin, for Desktop PC & Gaming
  • Includes JEDEC default profile, and AMD EXPO & Intel XMP 3.0 memory overclock profile
  • Do not mix memory kits. Memory kits are sold in matched kits that are designed to run together as a set. Mixing memory kits will result in stability issues or system failure.
  • Confirm the memory type and form factor supported by your exact system.
  • Check the supported speed and maximum capacity, plus how many slots are available and in use.
  • Verify whether modules are replaceable, especially on a laptop.
  • Compare the total cost and the seller’s warranty and return terms.

A compatible 32 GB RAM kit is relevant only if you have confirmed memory pressure and your PC supports the specific modules. A kit’s generation or module format is not universal across computers.
