To find out why a Windows 11 laptop woke unexpectedly, check its most recent wake report, active wake timers, and devices allowed to wake it. Then change only the setting implicated by the results. An allowed device is a possibility, not proof that it caused a particular wake.

Find the source of the last unexpected wake

After the laptop wakes unexpectedly, open Windows Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin). Run these commands one at a time and note the output:

  1. powercfg /lastwake
  2. powercfg /waketimers
  3. powercfg /devicequery wake_armed

Microsoft says /lastwake reports information about what woke the system from its last sleep transition. Because it describes the most recent transition, run it after the event you want to investigate. See Microsoft’s Powercfg command-line options.

Interpret the results without guessing

  • /lastwake names a device: That is the most direct clue about the event. Consider disabling wake permission for that device, as described below.
  • /waketimers lists a timer: A scheduled task or application may have requested a wake. Investigate the task or application shown before changing device settings. Microsoft notes that an enabled wake timer can wake a system from sleep or hibernation when it expires.
  • /devicequery wake_armed lists devices: These devices currently have permission to wake the laptop. The list does not show which one caused the last wake.
  • No identifiable source appears: The commands may not establish what caused this event. Do not assume a particular device or Windows process is responsible; continue with the applicable settings and, if needed, consult documentation for the laptop model.

To see which sleep states the PC supports, run powercfg /availablesleepstates (or powercfg /a). The result can help explain why available settings or sleep behavior differ between computers.

If a wake timer appears, investigate the scheduled task

Use the timer output to identify the task or application requesting a wake, then decide whether that scheduled action should be allowed to wake the laptop. Disabling wake timers can also prevent other wake-enabled scheduled work from starting the computer, so weigh that consequence before changing a power-plan setting.

Microsoft’s older article on PCs automatically waking from sleep discusses timers in a Windows 7 context. Its legacy menu directions should not be treated as verified Windows 11 navigation. The command output is the useful starting point; the exact task controls can vary.

If a device is implicated, remove only its wake permission

If /lastwake identifies a device, use the device name shown in the output to disable its ability to wake the PC. In an administrator terminal, run:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

powercfg /devicedisablewake "device name"

Replace device name with the exact name reported by Windows. Microsoft also documents /deviceenableawake to restore wake permission. Alternatively, check the device’s properties in Device Manager if the relevant wake option is available.

Disabling wake permission means that device may no longer be able to wake the laptop. Avoid disabling every device in the armed list: that list shows permissions, not which device caused the event.

Check whether presence sensing is waking the laptop

Some supported Windows 11 computers offer a wake-on-approach feature. Open Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen and sleep and look for Automatically wake up my device when I approach. If the option is present and you do not want approach to wake the device, turn it off or adjust it there.

Presence-sensing controls are not available on every laptop and may be managed by an organization. On some S3 systems, a USB-connected presence sensor may also depend on a BIOS setting for USB wake support. Microsoft explains the feature and its availability in Managing Presence Sensing settings in Windows 11.

Adjust sleep timing only if the laptop is sleeping at the wrong time

For supported devices, Windows 11 sleep-timeout controls are under Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts. Use them to change when the computer goes to sleep; they do not identify or fix the source of an unexpected wake. Available controls and behavior vary with the PC’s sleep capabilities, including whether it uses Modern Standby or S3. See Microsoft’s Power settings in Windows 11.

If peripherals misbehave after the laptop wakes

A keyboard, mouse, dock, or other connected device that behaves incorrectly after wake may need follow-up, but that symptom alone does not prove it caused the laptop to wake. Microsoft recommends checking that the device’s drivers are current; you can also disconnect and reconnect the device or restart it. See Shut down, sleep, or hibernate your PC.
