Usually, no—not the complete DirectX 12 Ultimate feature set. Some GTX cards can run the DirectX 12 API, but that does not mean they support every Ultimate capability. NVIDIA identifies GeForce RTX as its platform for the full set. The answer for an individual GTX card depends on its model and the features its hardware actually reports.
DirectX 12 support is not the same as DirectX 12 Ultimate
DirectX 12 is an API that games and applications use to communicate with graphics hardware. DirectX 12 Ultimate groups four capabilities: DirectX Raytracing (DXR), mesh shaders, variable rate shading (VRS), and sampler feedback. A driver can support the DirectX 12 API without the GPU implementing all four capabilities.
Microsoft explains that feature support depends on the hardware and that applications can query the graphics adapter for optional capabilities. A Direct3D feature level describes functionality, not performance, so neither a DirectX version nor a feature-level label alone tells you how fast a card will run a game or whether it supports every Ultimate feature. Microsoft’s Direct3D hardware feature-level documentation describes this distinction.

- DirectX Raytracing (DXR): Enables ray-traced effects such as lighting, reflections, and shadows. Hardware acceleration can affect how well those effects perform.
- Mesh shaders: Give the GPU a different way to process geometry and detail in a scene.
- Variable rate shading (VRS): Lets a game vary shading effort across parts of an image.
- Sampler feedback: Helps games manage texture streaming and texture-space shading.
These are distinct capabilities, not a single on/off switch. Microsoft documents separate capability queries and tiers for features such as mesh shaders and sampler feedback, while ray tracing and VRS support can also vary by hardware. Microsoft’s Direct3D 12 graphics documentation explains how applications access these capabilities.

Why NVIDIA’s GTX driver list can cause confusion
NVIDIA’s Studio Driver 451.48 release notes, dated June 24, 2020, describe support for the DirectX 12 Ultimate graphics API and list GTX 10-series and GTX 16-series cards among supported products. That wording establishes driver support; it does not establish that every listed GTX card has hardware support for all four Ultimate features. NVIDIA’s 451.48 release notes show the driver statement and supported-product list.
NVIDIA’s separate DirectX 12 Ultimate feature page identifies GeForce RTX as its platform for the full feature set. NVIDIA says, “GeForce RTX is the first and only PC platform with support for these game-changing features.” This is NVIDIA’s vendor statement about its platform, not an independent certification of every card’s capabilities. Its GeForce RTX overview also says specialized RT cores are found only on GeForce RTX graphics cards.

How to check your exact GTX card
- Identify the precise GPU model. Check Windows Device Manager under Display adapters, or use the graphics application or system information utility supplied with your PC. Record the model name rather than relying on “GTX.”
- Check the game’s requirements. Look for the particular feature it requires, such as DXR or mesh shaders. A game may require a capability that your card does not provide even if it launches with DirectX 12.
- Check reported capabilities. Use a Direct3D application or diagnostic that queries the adapter’s optional features and tiers. Compare the results with the game’s requirement; do not treat a DirectX version or feature level as proof of full Ultimate support.
- Update the graphics driver. A current compatible driver can expose supported features and fix issues, but it cannot add hardware capabilities the GPU does not have.
Should you upgrade?
Consider an upgrade if a game or application you need requires an Ultimate feature that your card does not support, or if its performance at your resolution and settings is inadequate. A GeForce RTX card is the relevant NVIDIA upgrade category for the full Ultimate feature set, but no model is a universal best choice. Compare the exact card’s feature support and game requirements, then check performance evidence for your resolution and settings, power-supply capacity, case clearance, local availability, and price before buying.
