To open the TPM Management console in Windows, press Windows+R, type tpm.msc, and press Enter. The console lets you check TPM status and access certain management or troubleshooting tasks. For most Windows 10 and Windows 11 users, there is no need to configure the TPM manually: Windows initializes it and takes ownership automatically.
Open TPM Management with tpm.msc
- Press Windows+R to open the Run dialog.
- Type
tpm.msc. - Press Enter or select OK.
- Review the TPM status shown in the console.
Microsoft refers to this as the TPM MMC. Its console is intended for specific management and troubleshooting needs, rather than routine setup. Microsoft says it is no longer actively developing the TPM management console beginning with Windows 10 version 1809 and Windows Server 2019. What to check if the console cannot find a compatible TPM
A message that Windows cannot find a compatible TPM, or an inability to load the console, does not by itself show that you need to buy a TPM module. TPM availability and firmware settings differ by computer. Consult your computer manufacturer’s documentation or contact your organization’s IT support for device-specific guidance.
Check TPM status with PowerShell
If you only need a status report, run Get-Tpm in PowerShell. The command returns TPM properties including whether a TPM is present, ready, enabled, or in a lockout state. See Microsoft’s Get-Tpm documentation for the command’s output and details.

Opening the console is not the same as clearing the TPM
Simply opening TPM Management does not clear or reset the TPM. Clearing it is a separate action that removes keys associated with the TPM. Those keys can protect data and credentials, so clearing may make protected data inaccessible; Microsoft specifically notes possible effects on items such as a virtual smart card or sign-in PIN.
Before clearing a TPM, confirm that important data is backed up and that you can use the necessary recovery methods. If the device belongs to work or school, ask the IT administrator before taking action. Microsoft advises clearing through Windows functionality, such as TPM.msc, rather than clearing the TPM directly from UEFI. A restart and physical confirmation may be required. Why most users should leave TPM settings alone
For Windows 10 and Windows 11, the operating system automatically initializes and takes ownership of the TPM. Microsoft recommends that most users avoid configuring it through the management console. Use tpm.msc to inspect status or handle a specific troubleshooting need, not as a routine setup step. Microsoft’s Trusted Platform Module overview describes this automatic behavior and the recommendation.
