To check a submitted appeal against a GST demand order, sign in to the GST Portal and open Services > User Services > My Applications. Choose Appeal to Appellate Authority, enter a From and To Date, then select Search. This route checks the appeal application; it does not establish a separate live-status screen for the underlying demand.

Check the status of a submitted demand appeal

  1. Sign in to the GST Portal using the taxpayer’s authorized credentials.
  2. Go to Services > User Services > My Applications.
  3. Set Application Type to Appeal to Appellate Authority.
  4. Enter the relevant date range in From and To Date.
  5. Select Search, then open or inspect the matching record to see the status shown for that appeal.

The GST Portal FAQ documents this lookup for appeals submitted against demand orders. Menu labels or procedures may change; the FAQ was accessed on October 4, 2026. See the GST Portal FAQ on filing an appeal against a demand order.

Appeal status and demand status are different records

The My Applications search is for the appeal application. The official help material reviewed does not confirm a complete, standalone current path for checking the live status of the underlying demand itself. Do not assume that an appeal status is also the demand’s status, or that the appeal search displays every detail about demand recovery.

For a manual or offline demand order that is absent from a portal selection list, the SPL-02 instructions describe choosing Manual entry and entering the order’s reference number. In that form, portal-issued orders may appear in a list and details may populate automatically; manual-order details may need to be entered. This is specific to the SPL-02 workflow, not a universal demand-status lookup. See the GST Portal SPL-02 instructions.

How to interpret the appeal status

The FAQ lists statuses including the following. A particular appeal may not pass through every stage, so rely on the exact label shown for that case rather than assuming a fixed sequence.

  • Appeal Submitted
  • Appeal admitted
  • Appeal Rejected
  • Appeal Withdrawn
  • Hearing Notice Issued
  • Reply Submitted
  • Adjournment Granted
  • Show Cause Notice Issued
  • Appeal Order Passed
  • Additional rectification and remand-related statuses

The FAQ’s wording has apparent inconsistencies around the order of rectification-related labels. When checking an actual case, use the portal’s displayed status rather than inferring its stage from a presumed sequence.

Confirm that the appeal was finally filed

A submitted application is not necessarily the final acknowledgment of filing. The GST Portal FAQ for “Filing an Appeal against Demand Order (FORM GST APL-01)” states: “The appeal is considered filed only when the final acknowledgment (APL-02) with an appeal number is issued.” The taxpayer and Appellate Authority receive an email after filing, and the taxpayer also receives an SMS, according to that FAQ.

If the order is uploaded, the FAQ says the Appellate Authority issues APL-02 and the provisional acknowledgment date is the filing date. If the order is not uploaded, the FAQ says a self-certified copy must be submitted within seven days of filing APL-01. If submitted later, the date of that submission is treated as the filing date. Check the acknowledgment and case-specific record rather than treating an initial submission as proof that APL-02 has issued.

What admission means for the disputed balance

The GST Portal FAQ says: “Yes, if Appeal filed is admitted, the GST Portal flags the balance disputed amount as non-recoverable.” The condition matters: the FAQ ties this portal flag to admission, not merely to submitting an appeal. It should not be read as a blanket statement that filing alone creates a stay or changes every aspect of recovery.

If a manual order or order number causes a problem

A manual demand order may need a system-generated demand order number for an appeal. The GST Portal known-issues guide advises contacting the jurisdictional officer about certain order-number problems. For an incorrect or unrecognized number, check it against the number on the order received from the Assessment Officer; an entered number that does not match can cause an error.

  1. Compare the entered number with the order issued by the Assessment Officer.
  2. If the order is manual and the portal requires a system-generated number, contact the jurisdictional officer for guidance.
  3. To find jurisdictional contact details, the troubleshooting guide gives the path Services > User Services > Contacts.

Filing deadlines and requirements: verify the current legal position

The GST Portal FAQ states that an aggrieved taxpayer or unregistered person may appeal within three months from communication of the decision or order. It says the Appellate Authority may condone a delay by up to one additional month if satisfied that sufficient cause prevented filing on time. The FAQ also states a minimum pre-deposit of 10% of disputed tax before filing, with a qualification that a lower percentage may be declared after approval from competent authorities.

These are legally consequential details from the portal FAQ, not a substitute for checking current law, applicable rules, the type of order, and the taxpayer’s facts. Confirm the current position before relying on a deadline or calculating a pre-deposit. The FAQ also says filing may be completed through DSC or EVC and that DSC is mandatory for companies and LLPs.
