To check a quoted GST rate in India, describe the product or service precisely, use the GST Portal’s Search HSN Code utility to find likely classifications, then verify the applicable entry and conditions in the current GST rate notifications. A search result is a clue, not a binding classification or a final rate determination. The correct rate depends on the specific supply and the notification in force on the transaction date.

How do I check the GST rate on a product or service?

  1. Describe what is being supplied. For goods, note what the item is made of, what it does, and details such as packaging, intended use, or whether it is sold as part of a bundle. For a service, describe the actual work or service supplied rather than relying only on a broad label.
  2. Open the GST Portal’s Search HSN Code utility. The GST Network (GSTN) advisory gives the route as Home > Services > User services > Search HSN Code. It says the utility is available both before and after login. Search by a code if you already have one, or search by description; for a description search, select whether the supply is goods or services.
  3. Review the candidate descriptions. Compare the results with the item or service you are actually buying. The tool can show trade and technical descriptions and related codes. Do not select the first result merely because its wording sounds similar.
  4. Verify the rate in the current official notification. Use the GST Council’s rate-notification listing to find the relevant entry and amendments. Read the full entry, including any exceptions or conditions, and check that it applies to the exact classification and supply on your transaction date. The listing includes amendments through 2025 in the material reviewed, so an old rate chart may not reflect the current position.
  5. Check the invoice’s tax components against the supply. Compare the total tax and the split shown on the bill with the transaction’s place-of-supply context. See the explanation below before treating a different split as an error.
  6. Get qualified advice if the classification remains unclear. This is particularly useful where two plausible descriptions lead to different rates, or a notification condition is difficult to apply to the transaction.

GSTN describes its search results as showing the “prevailing practice of HSN/ description used by IRN-generating taxpayers.” That describes the tool’s database basis; it does not mean GSTN guarantees that a suggested classification is legally correct.

Why an HSN or SAC search does not settle the rate

HSN codes classify goods; SAC codes classify services. The GST Portal utility helps narrow the possibilities by matching search terms against descriptions declared by taxpayers generating e-invoices. Its results depend on the words entered and are intended to facilitate a search. GSTN says the output is not legally binding and is not legal advice.

That makes the search a practical first step, not the final authority. A broad product name can cover goods with different materials, uses, packaging, or conditions, while a service label may hide differences in what was actually supplied. Confirm the candidate classification against the notification language and any conditions that apply. If the facts do not clearly fit one entry, a qualified Indian GST professional can help interpret the classification for that transaction.

How to read GST on the invoice

The tax components may differ according to whether the supply is intra-state or inter-state. The Government of India service listing says an intra-state supply uses CGST plus SGST or UTGST, while an inter-state supply uses IGST. Check the transaction’s place-of-supply context before assuming that every invoice should show the same split. The component labels alone do not establish whether the total rate is correct.

Which checking route should I use?

Route Best for What it establishes
GST Portal Search HSN Code Finding likely goods or services codes from a description Suggested matches based on the search input and descriptions in the tool; not a binding legal determination.
Current GST Council rate notifications Checking the rate entry, amendments, and applicable conditions The official notification text relevant to the classification and transaction date.
Qualified GST practitioner or chartered accountant Resolving fact-specific classification or interpretation questions Professional advice on how the rules may apply to the particular supply; it is an optional escalation, not a substitute for describing the transaction accurately.

Can I use this to check a hotel, restaurant, or footwear bill?

Yes. The Ministry of Finance has specifically cited hotel, restaurant, and footwear bills as examples consumers can cross-check. Use the description and details of the actual item or service, identify a likely classification, and compare it with the applicable current notification. A category name alone is not enough to establish the rate for a particular transaction.
