To check GST for a product or service in India, identify its correct HSN classification (or service classification/SAC), match that code and the full description to the relevant CBIC rate schedule, then verify any conditions and later notifications or clarifications. For an invoice, separately determine the place of supply to know whether the tax is shown as CGST plus SGST/UTGST or as IGST.

What you need to check

A GST rate is not always determined by an everyday product name. The applicable schedule entry can depend on details such as composition, form, weight, packaging, or intended use. For a service, the scope of what is supplied matters. The official schedules list goods and services separately and include tax components, conditions, and cess fields. Start with the actual supply, not a guess based on a similar item or an old rate chart.

Use the CBIC GST goods and services rate schedules as the central rate reference. Because entries may be amended, confirm the relevant notification and effective date before relying on a rate for a sale or invoice.

How to look up the rate

  1. Describe the supply precisely. For goods, note what the product is made of, its form, packaging, weight, and intended use when those details are relevant. For services, describe the complete service rather than relying on a broad label. CBIC’s GST FAQ illustrates why attributes matter: its saree examples distinguish classification by constituent fibre and fabric weight. The examples are illustrative, not an exhaustive or necessarily current rate determination.
  2. Find a likely HSN or service classification. Search using the GST Portal’s HSN/SAC search, or use the GSTR-1 workflow’s description search described in the GST Portal GSTR-1 tutorial. HSN codes are organized from broader headings to more detailed subheadings and tariff items; services use service classifications, commonly called SAC. Treat a search result as a candidate to verify, not as a final legal determination. CBIC’s HSN classification press release provides background on code structure and lookup pathways, but is not a current rate list.
  3. Match the code and full description to the CBIC schedule. Check whether the schedule entry’s classification and wording fit the actual supply. Read the entire entry, including qualifiers, exceptions, provisos, rate columns, and any cess field. A similar heading is not enough if the product or service falls under a more specific entry or condition.
  4. Verify amendments and clarifications. Search the CBIC Tax Information Portal for the governing notification and any later amendments, circulars, or clarifications. The portal carries GST acts, rules, forms, notifications, circulars, instructions, guidelines, and orders. Check whether an instrument changes the schedule entry and when it takes effect.
  5. Apply the transaction’s place-of-supply treatment. Establish the supplier’s location and the place of supply. The GST Portal’s taxpayer guide explains the basic distinction: a same-state place of supply is intra-state and uses central and state/UT tax fields; a different-state place of supply is inter-state and uses IGST treatment. This determines the invoice tax split, not the product’s underlying rate.
  6. Record the applicable date and source. Note the transaction date and the effective date of the controlling notification or clarification. A schedule page viewed today may not resolve an earlier transaction or a special fact pattern.

How to resolve two plausible classifications

If more than one schedule entry appears to fit, compare the actual facts against each entry before choosing one. Keep the classification decision separate from the invoice tax split.

What to compare What to verify
HSN or service classification Whether the heading, subheading, or service classification matches the supply’s detailed description.
Product attributes or service scope Composition, form, weight, packaging, intended use, or the complete scope of the service, where relevant to the wording.
Rate and conditions The rate columns, exemptions, exceptions, provisos, and any conditions attached to the schedule entry.
Cess Whether the matching schedule entry specifies cess in addition to the GST components.
Legal update and effective date The controlling notification or clarification, later amendments, and the date each provision applies.
Invoice tax split Whether place of supply makes the transaction intra-state or inter-state; this is a separate question from classification and rate.

Common lookup mistakes

  • Using only a retail name. Two goods sold under the same casual name may differ in an attribute that the schedule uses to distinguish them.
  • Stopping at the HSN search result. A portal search helps locate a likely code; it does not replace checking the schedule wording and the legal instruments behind it.
  • Relying on an old chart or calculator. Rates and conditions can change. Verify the current schedule against notifications and circulars, especially for a transaction that needs a defensible treatment.
  • Confusing tax split with rate. CGST plus SGST/UTGST versus IGST follows the place-of-supply treatment; it does not identify the correct HSN/SAC or rate.
  • Ignoring the transaction date. The effective date of a change matters when checking a past invoice or an upcoming supply.

When the official lookup is not enough

If the facts do not clearly fit one entry, or an exemption or condition depends on details not established by the available documents, do not infer a rate from a nearby heading. Gather the product specifications or service agreement, the candidate schedule entries, and the relevant notifications or circulars, then obtain advice from a qualified GST professional for that transaction. The schedules and portal tools support a lookup; they do not determine an unspecified or disputed fact pattern on their own.
