Gmail on a computer checks spelling while you type. Potentially misspelled words or phrases are underlined in the draft; click an underline, choose Gmail’s suggested correction, or select Ignore when the text is intentional. Before sending, also confirm that spelling suggestions are enabled under Settings > See all settings > General. Google documents this workflow in Gmail Help.
The checker is a useful first pass, not a guarantee that every error, name, address, or meaning problem will be found. Use the procedure below to review the draft efficiently, understand what the related Gmail writing features do, and troubleshoot when no suggestions appear.
Check spelling in a Gmail draft
The ordinary Gmail spelling check works automatically as you compose on a computer. You do not need to run a separate scan or install an add-on.
- Open Gmail in a desktop browser and click Compose, or open the draft you want to finish.
- Type or paste your message into the body of the draft.
- Look for words or phrases with an underline indicating that Gmail has detected a possible issue.
- Click the underlined text to open the suggestion menu.
- Click the suggested correction to replace the text, or click Ignore if the spelling is deliberate, such as a person’s name, product name, acronym, or specialized term.
- Continue through the draft, then read the entire message once more before selecting Send.
Google says common misspellings may be corrected automatically. That means a word can change without you explicitly selecting a suggestion. If Gmail makes an unwanted correction, immediately press Ctrl+Z on Windows or Cmd+Z on Mac to undo it.

How to interpret an underline
An underline identifies a possible spelling problem, not proof that the word is wrong. Names, uncommon place names, technical vocabulary, intentional abbreviations, and words from another language can be flagged even when they are correct. Check the surrounding sentence and your intended meaning before accepting a replacement.
Accept, ignore, and undo decisions
- Accept: Use the suggestion when it matches the word you intended and the sentence still means what you want.
- Ignore: Use this when the text is correct in context or is a proper name, identifier, or deliberate variation.
- Undo: Use Ctrl+Z or Cmd+Z if an automatic correction or an accepted suggestion changed the draft incorrectly.
Do not treat the first suggestion as an instruction to rewrite the sentence. Gmail’s standard spelling feature is focused on possible spelling corrections; deciding whether a sentence is accurate, appropriately addressed, and suitable for its recipient remains your responsibility.
Confirm that spelling suggestions are enabled
If no words are underlined, check Gmail’s setting before assuming the message is error-free. The control is in Gmail’s full settings page, not in the compose toolbar.
- Open Gmail on your computer.
- Click the Settings gear in the upper-right corner.
- Choose See all settings.
- Remain on the General tab.
- Find the Spelling suggestions section and make sure the option is enabled.
- Scroll to the bottom and click Save Changes if Gmail presents that button.
- Return to the draft and type a few words, or reopen the draft, to see whether potential misspellings are underlined.
Google places grammar and autocorrect controls in the same General settings area, but they are separate from spelling suggestions. Enabling one does not mean that the others are enabled.

The exact labels or availability can vary with the account interface and language. If a control is missing, first verify that you are using Gmail on a computer and that the message language is supported.

A practical review before you click Send
Spelling suggestions are most useful when you combine them with a short human proofread. Use this sequence after you have handled the underlined items.
- Check the recipient fields. Read every address in To, Cc, and Bcc. A perfectly spelled message sent to the wrong person is still a serious mistake.
- Read names manually. Gmail may not recognize a person’s preferred spelling, capitalization, or diacritics. Compare names with your contact record or the original correspondence.
- Verify meaning. Look for words that are spelled correctly but are wrong for the sentence, such as a homophone or a similar-looking term. A spelling checker cannot reliably infer what you intended to say in every context.
- Check numbers and identifiers. Re-read dates, times, amounts, order numbers, URLs, file names, and account references character by character.
- Review attachments and links. Confirm that the promised file is attached and that links lead where you intend. Spelling suggestions do not validate those items.
- Read the subject and closing. The subject is part of the message’s first impression, and the sign-off should identify the sender clearly.
- Read once as the recipient. Check whether the request, deadline, and next action are unambiguous. Correct spelling does not automatically make an email clear or complete.
This final pass is editorial guidance rather than a claim that Gmail detects every category of error. It is especially important for short messages, where one incorrect word can change the entire meaning.

What to do when Gmail shows no spelling underlines
Check the spelling setting first
Return to Settings > See all settings > General and review Spelling suggestions. Save any change, reopen the draft if necessary, and test with a deliberately misspelled ordinary word. Do not send the test message.
Consider the language
Google states that spelling and grammar checks in Gmail may not be available in all languages. A message written in an unsupported language can therefore have no underlines even when the setting is enabled. Mixed-language text can also produce uneven results: a familiar English word may be recognized while a term in another language is not.
Distinguish an unflagged word from a correct word
Gmail’s checker does not promise to identify every error. A correctly spelled but incorrect word, a wrong name, a transposed number, or an unclear sentence may pass without an underline. Continue with the manual recipient, context, and number checks instead of treating the absence of marks as approval.

Check where you are composing
The confirmed Gmail workflow in Google’s documentation is for the computer interface. If you are composing in a different client, an embedded mail window, or a mobile app, its spelling behavior may be controlled by that product or by the device. Use Gmail on a computer when you need the documented Settings path.

Spelling, Smart Compose, and Gemini Proofread are different
Gmail includes several writing aids that can appear together but serve different purposes. Standard spelling suggestions are the built-in correction mechanism described above; the other features are optional or account-dependent.

Why Smart Compose is not a spelling requirement
You do not need Smart Compose to catch ordinary spelling issues. Its job is to predict likely continuations, not to provide the click-an-underline spelling workflow. You can leave predictions unused and still use Gmail’s standard spelling suggestions.
Why Gemini Proofread is not a prerequisite
Gemini Proofread is a separate, broader writing aid. An account without an eligible plan, Workspace configuration, administrator approval, or current access can still use the standard spelling setting when that setting is available for the message language. Do not assume that seeing or not seeing Gemini controls tells you whether spelling suggestions are enabled.
Language and account limitations
Language support is the most important qualification on Gmail’s ordinary checker. Google’s wording is explicit: “Spelling and grammar checks in Gmail may not be available in all languages.” The result can depend on the language of the text, the account environment, and the feature being used.

- If the message is in a supported language, Gmail may underline likely misspellings while you type.
- If the language is not supported, the setting can be enabled without producing useful suggestions.
- Smart Compose has its own listed languages—English, Spanish, French, Italian, and Portuguese—which are not a universal language list for every Gmail writing feature.
- Gemini Proofread access can depend on a Google AI plan, Workspace access, administrator settings, beta status, and rollout. Treat the controls displayed in your account as authoritative.
For a multilingual email, proofread names, quoted material, and non-English sections yourself even when Gmail marks some words elsewhere in the draft.
Computer versus phone or tablet
The step-by-step procedure in this guide is for Gmail on a computer because that is the interface covered by Google’s spelling-and-grammar documentation. Google’s iPhone and iPad help page explains composing and sending messages but does not establish identical Gmail spelling controls for every mobile device. On a phone or tablet, the keyboard and operating-system language settings may supply their own spell-check behavior. Those suggestions can differ from Gmail’s computer interface, and the available controls can vary by device, keyboard, app version, and account. If the spelling of an important message matters, compose or open the draft on a computer and use Gmail’s documented underlines and General settings. Regardless of device, manually inspect recipients, names, numbers, and meaning before sending.

Proper names
Suppose a client’s surname is an uncommon spelling that Gmail underlines. Accepting a familiar-looking replacement could make the email disrespectful or misdirected. Compare the name with the client’s signature or contact record, then choose Ignore if the original is correct.

A sentence can contain a correctly spelled word that does not express your intention. Because the word itself is valid, it may not be underlined. Read the sentence aloud or substitute the word you meant during your manual pass.

Technical terms and identifiers
Product codes, file names, command names, and abbreviations may be unfamiliar to Gmail. Check capitalization and every character against the source rather than changing an underlined term automatically.
Automatic correction that changes meaning
If Gmail changes a common misspelling automatically but the resulting text is wrong in context, use Ctrl+Z on Windows or Cmd+Z on Mac immediately. Then type the intended wording and continue reviewing the rest of the draft.
A repeatable send-time checklist
For routine messages, this compact checklist keeps the process fast without skipping the important decisions:

- The subject states the purpose, the request is clear, and the closing is appropriate.
- Attachments and recipients are correct.
- The message language is one for which Gmail’s checks are available, or you have completed a careful manual proofread where they are not.
Once these checks are complete, click Send. Gmail’s spelling feature reduces avoidable typographical errors, while the final judgment about accuracy and meaning remains with you.
