Before buying during an online sale, check the seller’s recent feedback, read the return terms for that exact item, and confirm what the marketplace will do if something goes wrong. Then compare the full checkout cost, save the terms and messages, and note every return or claim deadline. A sale price does not guarantee a return right or a particular refund policy. This guide uses U.S. Federal Trade Commission guidance; consumer rights and rules differ elsewhere.
1. Check the seller’s reputation—not just the star score
- Open the seller profile. A product’s overall rating may combine feedback about different sellers. Find the specific seller offering the item and review that account’s history and contact information.
- Read recent comments. Look for specific reports about delivery, item condition, communication, returns, and refunds. Repeated, recent complaints can be more useful than a high average score.
- Compare more than one source. Search the seller or site name alongside terms such as “review,” “complaint,” or “scam.” Consider who posted each review and whether the platform identifies incentivized reviews.
- Use reviews as evidence, not proof. Reviews can be fake or misleading, whether positive or negative, and incentives may not always be clear. FTC guidance also warns that suppressing reviews about customer service, delivery, returns, or exchanges can be deceptive. A pattern of detailed experiences is useful context, but it cannot guarantee your outcome.
An unusually low price for an expensive branded product is a reason to investigate further, not proof of fraud. There is no universal star-rating cutoff that guarantees a safe purchase.
For more on review reliability, see the FTC’s advice on spotting fake reviews and its guidance on the Consumer Reviews and Testimonials Rule.
2. Read the return terms for the exact sale item
Check both the seller’s return or refund policy and the specific listing’s conditions. A general store policy may not cover every seller, item, or sale exception. The FTC notes that sellers often set different rules for sale items, particularly clearance merchandise, so do not assume a discounted item can be returned on the same terms as a full-price one.

- Eligibility: Does the policy exclude sale, clearance, final-sale, refurbished, or open-box items?
- Remedy: Will you receive a refund, an exchange, or store credit?
- Deadline: By what date must you request or send the return? Check how the policy defines the start of the period.
- Return cost: Who pays postage, and are there handling or restocking fees?
- Conditions: Must the item be unused, unopened, or returned with original packaging?
If the terms are vague, ask the seller before paying and keep the reply in writing. The applicable law may also matter; the listing’s policy is not a substitute for checking your rights where you live.
See the FTC’s online shopping guidance for advice on checking seller policies and sale-item terms.
3. Find out what marketplace protection actually covers
A marketplace may only connect buyers and sellers, or it may offer a process to request help or a refund in defined situations. The seller’s return promise and the marketplace’s buyer-protection process are separate: a generous seller policy does not automatically mean the marketplace will intervene.

Read the marketplace’s current rules and verify that they cover the particular item, seller, payment method, and problem you are concerned about. Note the claim window and any required steps. If the seller asks you to communicate or pay outside the platform, pause: leaving the marketplace’s system can remove its protection. The FTC advises buyers not to pay outside the marketplace.

4. Compare the complete price and delivery promise
Compare the final checkout total, not only the advertised sale price. Include shipping, handling, delivery charges, taxes, and other fees. Check whether the price depends on a subscription, required add-on, or other condition, and confirm the item’s condition.

Save the promised delivery date. Under U.S. FTC guidance, a seller must ship as promised; if no shipping time is stated, the seller generally must ship within 30 days after receiving the buyer’s name, address, payment, or permission to charge. This is a shipping rule, not a general right to return an item.

5. Keep records and choose a payment method with recourse
Before checkout, save a screenshot or copy of the listing, sale conditions, return policy, delivery promise, and any written seller answers. After ordering, retain the confirmation, receipt, payment record, and relevant messages. Write down the return deadline and marketplace claim deadline so they do not pass unnoticed.
Where possible, use a payment method that offers a route to dispute a charge. FTC guidance favors credit cards where possible; card protections and dispute options depend on the transaction and applicable rules. Avoid gift cards, wire transfers, cash reload cards, cryptocurrency, and requests to pay outside the marketplace system. The FTC’s online shopping advice covers payment precautions and recordkeeping.

Compare the factors that determine both the likelihood of a smooth purchase and your options if it is not:
- Review evidence: Are comments recent and specific? Do patterns appear across multiple sources? Are incentives disclosed?
- Accountability: Is the seller identifiable, reachable, and willing to answer questions in writing?
- Return terms: Is the item eligible? Is the remedy a refund, exchange, or credit? Who pays postage, and is there a fee?
- Marketplace recourse: Does the marketplace’s process cover this seller and item, and how soon must you file?
- All-in deal: What is the final price, item condition, delivery promise, and any condition attached to the discount?
- Payment and records: Can you use a payment method with recourse, and can you keep the listing and terms?
A high rating can coexist with restrictive return terms. Choose based on the evidence and remedy you can verify, rather than the star average alone.
If the order or return goes wrong
- Contact the seller promptly and keep the conversation in writing.
- If direct resolution fails, contact the marketplace and follow its stated process before the claim window closes.
- If you paid by card, contact the card issuer about a dispute when appropriate and ask about its deadlines.
- Keep the order documents, policy, messages, and payment record together.
- You can report suspected dishonest businesses to the FTC, but the FTC does not resolve individual complaints.
FTC consumer guidance reported that online shopping scams were the second-most reported type of scam to the agency in 2022. That figure describes reports received by the FTC in that year; it is not a current-year rate or an estimate of the chance that a particular sale is fraudulent.
