MediaPipe can help a browser checker locate a face and estimate its position and scale, but it cannot certify a passport photo. First choose the issuing country, document, and application route—especially whether the photo is for a digital upload or a printed application—then compare the image with that route’s official rules. Requirements differ: for example, the United States publishes separate specifications for online renewal and paper applications, and Canada says digital and physical photo specifications differ.
Choose the right government rules before checking a photo
There is no single universal passport-photo specification. A useful checker should ask for the country or issuing authority, the document, and the submission route before analyzing an image. Do not apply print dimensions to a digital upload, or assume that a digital file’s pixel requirements describe a printed photo.
For example, the U.S. Department of State specifies a 2 x 2 inch (51 x 51 mm) print for a paper application and gives a head-height range for that printed photo. Its online-renewal guidance describes different image criteria. Canada explicitly notes that digital-photo specifications differ from physical-photo specifications. Use the relevant authority’s current page for the exact application you are making:
- U.S. Department of State: passport photo requirements
- U.S. Department of State: online renewal photo guidance
- GOV.UK: digital passport photo guidance
- Government of Canada: passport photo specifications
What MediaPipe can measure
MediaPipe’s FaceLandmarker returns face landmarks in normalized image coordinates and supports image, video, and live-stream processing. Its FaceDetector returns a face bounding box in the coordinate system of the unrotated input image. Those outputs can help a checker identify whether a face is present and estimate its location, scale, and framing. They do not determine whether the full photo satisfies a government’s requirements.
#1 Best Overall
- Includes everything you need to capture & print passport photos
- Pre-programmed to work straight out of the box
- Transfer images from camera to printer via SD card or USB cable (not included)
- Digital Camera (model/mfr. Subject to change)
- Includes 2x2" Tabletop Passport Cutter
For a static upload, image-mode analysis is a natural approach. A checker can use landmarks or the detected face box to show a guide overlay and compare approximate placement with the selected rule set. Keep the image coordinates consistent: if the displayed image has been rotated or cropped, account for that transformation before comparing detector coordinates or drawing the overlay. The documented Python task API describes these outputs and modes; it does not establish JavaScript package setup or browser compatibility.
For a live camera preview, do not assume every frame will have a corresponding result. MediaPipe’s live-stream processing may drop input frames to reduce latency, so an overlay should use the latest available result rather than treating missed frames as proof that no face is present.

What a checker must assess beyond face placement
A face box cannot reliably establish every requirement. The selected government rule set may also require checks for background, shadows, lighting, image sharpness, pose, visible eyes, expression, file dimensions, file size, color, and editing. Some can be measured or flagged automatically; others need clear user guidance or human judgment.

Examples of route-specific rules
- U.S. online renewal: The State Department calls for a plain white or off-white background without shadows, texture, lines, or objects; a sharp, high-quality image; a camera-facing pose; open, visible eyes; and an original photo without filters or digital changes. It says its tool checks basic requirements and an employee reviews the photo after submission.
- U.S. paper application: The State Department specifies a 2 x 2 inch (51 x 51 mm) photo, with the head measuring 1 to 1⅜ inches (25 to 35 mm) from chin to crown. It calls for a white or off-white background and says not to alter the image using software, apps, filters, or AI.
- UK digital application: GOV.UK specifies a minimum image size of 600 pixels wide by 750 pixels tall and a file size from 50 KB to 10 MB. It also requires a plain light-coloured background, an unaltered colour photo, a forward-facing pose, open visible eyes, and no shadows on the face or behind the subject. GOV.UK’s wording is: “Your photo must be unaltered by computer software.”
These figures belong to the cited routes, not to passport photos everywhere. Check the relevant official page for current rules before submitting.
How to design a useful browser checker
- Ask for jurisdiction and route. Collect the issuing authority and whether the photo is for a digital application or a paper application. Select only a rule set that applies to that combination.
- Analyze the image in a consistent coordinate system. For a static upload, use image-mode face analysis. Preserve the relationship between the original image, any rotation or crop, the detector’s unrotated-image bounding box, and the displayed preview.
- Report measurements, not a blanket pass. Show what the tool detected, such as face location or approximate scale, and identify which specific checks are outside its ability to confirm. Make it possible for users to understand why a warning appeared.
- Keep subjective checks visible. Prompt the user to inspect background, lighting, pose, eyes, sharpness, and other criteria that cannot be established by face landmarks alone. Avoid treating an uncertain automated result as definitive.
- Attribute and maintain each rule. Keep requirements tied to their official source and application route rather than hard-coding a generic “passport size.” Rules for other countries, exceptions, age groups, or routes should not be implied unless they have been verified.
How to judge a checker or photo service
When choosing a tool, check whether it uses the correct authority’s rules and distinguishes digital uploads from print output. Look for a clear explanation of which criteria it measures automatically and which require your review. Also check whether it returns a crop, a resized file, or guidance on the original; editing may itself conflict with a rule that requires an unaltered image. A checker can help identify issues, but it cannot promise acceptance: the issuing authority makes that decision.
