To avoid risking a turn on an unfamiliar word in Words With Friends 2, form the play on the board and check it with the in-game Word Strength feature before submitting. Also inspect every other word the placement creates where its tiles touch existing letters: all of them must be valid. If you want to know what an accepted word means, use the English dictionary in the game; that is a separate feature from the validity check.
Check a new word before submitting your play
- Arrange the tiles on the board without committing the move. Judge the word in the position where you intend to play it, not just as a string of letters.
- Use Word Strength to check the proposed play. Zynga documents Word Strength as a way to check whether a word formed is valid in Words With Friends 2 and how strong it is. The help article does not specify a universal button label or screen path, so the exact interface may vary by app version.
- Check every word created by the placement. A play can form the main word and additional words where placed tiles meet letters already on the board. Zynga’s rules allow multiple words from one placement, but the move is not allowed if it creates an illegal neighboring word.
- Submit only after the proposed words check out. The official rules reviewed here do not state a specific penalty for an invalid submission, so the reliable advice is simply to verify first rather than assume what a rejected play will cost.
Use the in-game dictionary to learn what the word means
Word Strength and dictionary lookup answer different questions. Word Strength checks whether a play is valid in the game; the English dictionary feature lets you search for the definition of an unfamiliar word. Check validity first, then look up the definition if you want to understand the word.
Why a general dictionary may disagree with the game
Words With Friends uses its own game-specific English word list. Zynga Player Support says the game has “more than 173,000 acceptable English words for use in the game” in its Words With Friends Rule book. The page does not state a publication year; it showed “Last Updated: 1d” when accessed on October 7, 2026.

Zynga says the list draws on the Oxford English Dictionary and includes some words Zynga has added. The rules permit entries labeled as parts of speech, including foreign-origin, archaic, obsolete, colloquial, and slang words. They exclude proper nouns, abbreviations, standalone prefixes and suffixes, and words that require a hyphen or apostrophe. As a result, an ordinary dictionary’s inclusion or omission of a word does not settle whether the game accepts it.

When an external word finder can help
Third-party tools can suggest plays or check against a Words With Friends word list, but they are not Zynga’s confirmation of the current in-game list. Some checkers offer separate Words With Friends and Scrabble checks, and word finders can search possible plays from letters. Use them as idea generators or secondary references, then verify the actual board placement with Word Strength and inspect its cross-words in the game.
An external list cannot replace checking the proposed placement: a suggested main word does not by itself establish that every new word touching the board is legal. The official in-game validity check is the better final check for a current Words With Friends 2 play.
