Yes. A phone case can slow or stop wireless charging when it is too thick, contains metal, fits poorly, or interferes with alignment. But a case is only one possible cause: the phone, charger, power adapter, and positioning can matter too. The quickest check is to compare charging with and without the case using the same setup.
How a case can affect wireless charging
Wireless charging depends on the phone and charger being compatible and positioned so their charging coils can work together. A case may interfere if it adds too much distance, includes metal or other obstructions, or prevents the phone from sitting in the right position. A case can also be incompatible with a particular phone-and-charger combination even if another combination works.
Apple advises iPhone users to try removing a thick, metal, or battery case when charging is slow or does not start. Samsung likewise identifies case thickness and third-party cover compatibility as troubleshooting factors. These are manufacturer recommendations, not a measured speed penalty that applies to every case.

Thickness and fit
Thickness guidance depends on the charger and phone setup. Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance for Samsung wireless chargers says a non-Samsung case should be no thicker than 5 mm. That is not a universal limit for all phones or chargers. Apple does not give a universal millimeter limit in its cited charging guidance.

Check that the case is made for your exact phone model and does not leave the phone poorly positioned on the charger. A case that fits one model may not fit another model’s charging layout.
Metal, cards, and added features
Metal cases or accessories can interfere with charging. Apple cautions against magnetic mounts, magnetic cases, and other objects between the iPhone and charger; it also notes that charging may damage magnetic strips or RFID chips. Samsung warns against placing cards, RFID cards, or conductive materials between the phone and charger.

Wallet pockets, grips, rings, or other add-ons can also change the distance or alignment between phone and charger. If charging is unreliable, remove these along with the case before concluding that the charger or phone is faulty.
Qi and Qi2 compatibility
Look for compatibility with your exact phone and charger, rather than relying only on a general “wireless charging” label. The Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) says Qi-certified products are tested for safety and interoperability. Its certified-product database includes phone covers, such as a certified Samsung Galaxy S25 Clear Magnet Case; that listing is an example, not a recommendation for every setup. Qi2 uses magnetic attachment to align compatible devices and chargers. The WPC says Qi2 supports 15 W for devices certified for it. Qi2 25W launched in July 2025 and supports up to 25 W; the WPC also states that it can charge a smartphone battery from 0 to 50% in about 30 minutes. That is a standards-body statement, not a guaranteed result for a particular phone, case, charger, or charging session. How to tell whether your case is the problem
- Use the same setup for both checks. Keep the phone, charger, power adapter, charge level, and room conditions as consistent as possible.
- Remove the case and clear the charging surface. Take away cards, magnetic accessories, grips, and other objects between the phone and charger.
- Place the phone correctly. Center it on the charging pad or follow the charger maker’s recommended placement. Apple recommends centering an iPhone on a Qi charger; MagSafe provides magnetic alignment for compatible iPhones and chargers.
- Compare the result. If charging improves without the case, the case or an attached accessory may be affecting compatibility, distance, or alignment. If behavior does not change, investigate the charger, adapter, phone compatibility, and positioning instead.
For a fair comparison, keep placement consistent and allow for other factors that can affect charging, including phone temperature. Do not infer a specific number of minutes or percentage of speed lost from a simple case-on/case-off check: the cited guidance does not quantify a case-related penalty.

What else can make wireless charging slow or stop?
- Misalignment: Samsung says poor alignment can cause slow or interrupted charging, or overheating. Follow the charger’s placement instructions.
- Charger or adapter mismatch: A Qi-certified charger, the required power adapter, and support for the phone’s charging standard all matter. Apple says iPhone 8 or later supports Qi-certified charging accessories and gives up to 7.5 W for many Qi chargers with the latest iOS; that guidance is specific to the stated iPhone and accessory context, not a universal Qi limit.
- Obstructions: Cards, conductive materials, magnetic accessories, or other objects between phone and charger can disrupt charging or create other problems.
- Temperature: Samsung’s instructions identify overheating as a possible consequence of poor alignment. If the phone or charger becomes unusually hot, stop charging and check the device and charger instructions.
When to replace or remove the case
If the phone charges normally without the case but not with it, check whether the case maker explicitly lists wireless-charging compatibility for your precise phone model. Review the case’s thickness and any metal, magnets, cards, or add-ons, then confirm that its alignment works with your charger. Samsung recommends Qi2-certified covers and MPP wireless chargers for optimal performance on supported setups; compatibility still depends on the devices involved.
