To check a responsive search ad’s text assets, open Campaigns > Ads, find the ad, and select View asset details. For a wider campaign view, open Campaigns > Assets. Use the report to learn which assets were served, then judge possible replacements alongside campaign or asset-group results, Ad Strength, and the combinations in which the assets appeared. An asset-level CTR, CPC, CPA, or ROAS is directional—not proof that the asset caused the result.

Choose the report that answers your question

Google Ads has two useful scopes for reviewing text assets. Start with the ad-level report when you want to compare assets in one responsive search ad. Use the campaign-level Assets page when you need to review assets across ads or see a broader view of campaign activity. Choosing the scope first helps avoid comparing figures that describe different sets of ads and assets.

Report Path Best used for Scope notes
Responsive search ad asset report Campaigns > Ads > find the responsive search ad > View asset details Comparing text assets associated with one ad Useful for within-ad review. Use a date range on or after June 5, 2025 for the full performance statistics Google describes for responsive search ad asset reports.
Campaign-level Assets page Campaigns > Assets Reviewing assets across a campaign or comparing a broader set Includes active assets associated with active ads, ad groups, and campaigns that had impressions in the last 30 days. Asset data updates daily, so a recent change may not appear right away.

These views answer different questions; a campaign-wide result should not be treated as if it were the performance of one particular headline. Check the report’s date range before drawing a conclusion, especially if you are investigating a recent edit. Google says the full responsive search ad asset statistics are available for dates on or after June 5, 2025. The older Performance label column is deprecated in these reports, so use the available metrics that match your campaign goal instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a quick diagnosis, begin with the ad-level view if you already know which responsive search ad you want to review. It narrows the question to the assets associated with that ad. If you need to understand a set of ads, or review Google-customized text across a larger campaign, switch to the campaign-level Assets page. A result in the broader view may combine activity across multiple active ads, ad groups, or campaigns; it is useful for oversight, but it does not isolate one ad’s copy.

The campaign-level report has a specific inclusion window: its active-asset view covers assets associated with active ads, ad groups, and campaigns that have had impressions in the last 30 days. That means an asset missing from this view is not automatically evidence that its text is poor. First check whether the asset and its associated advertising meet the report’s scope conditions, then use the ad-level view when you need to inspect a particular responsive search ad.

Read the report before deciding what to change

Identify the text and its source

Review the Assets and Asset type columns to identify the text and whether it is a headline, description, or another asset type. Check Added by to see whether the text was provided by an advertiser or generated by Google. Google-customized text is marked Google AI in that column. Filters can narrow the report by state, type, performance, and other attributes, and Google says reports can be downloaded.

Make sure you are looking at the correct row before interpreting its numbers. The asset text tells you what was shown as an option; the asset type identifies what kind of asset it is; and Added by helps establish who supplied it. Those distinctions matter when the next step might be to rewrite advertiser-provided copy, remove Google-generated text, or simply investigate why an asset has little activity. If the report is long, use its filters to focus on the relevant state or type, and download the report if you need to review a broader set consistently.

Use impressions to understand whether an asset was served

Impressions show how often an asset was shown. They are useful context when deciding whether there is enough activity to assess an asset, but they do not explain why Google selected or did not select it. An asset with few or no impressions may have limited evidence in the report; do not read a performance label or a small amount of activity as a complete diagnosis of its copy.

When an asset has impressions, it has at least been served, but that alone does not establish whether it is useful. When it has few impressions, there may not be much evidence for comparing its results with another text asset. When it has none, check the date range and report scope before drawing conclusions. Google’s recommendation to consider replacing an asset after zero impressions for several weeks is a prompt for review, not an explanation of why the asset did not serve.

Treat asset-level ratios as directional

Google cautions that asset-level ratio metrics—including CTR, CPC, CPA, and ROAS—are directional indicators only. Responsive search ads serve combinations of assets, so the outcome associated with one text asset is influenced by the other assets shown with it. Asset impressions, clicks, and costs may also be non-summable across reporting levels. Avoid adding figures from different rows or levels as though they were independent totals.

Google Ads Help puts the caveat plainly: “Directional Ratios: Ratio metrics at the asset level, such as CTR, CPC, CPA, ROAS, should be used as directional indicators only.” The practical consequence is that a seemingly favorable or unfavorable asset ratio should tell you where to look next, not settle the question. The ad’s other assets and the combinations in which they appeared are part of the context.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a replacement decision, compare like asset types within the same report scope, then look at conversion volume or value in relation to the campaign goal and at the overall campaign or asset-group outcome. The asset report can help you spot candidates to review; it does not establish that one line of copy independently produced a conversion or caused a change in return.

A useful comparison is therefore a sequence, not a single ranking: first compare similar assets within one ad or one clearly defined report scope; next consider whether each received enough impressions to make the comparison meaningful; then review conversions or conversion value in the context of the campaign’s goal; finally check broader campaign or asset-group results. Keep the scope consistent as you do this. Comparing a headline in one ad with a campaign-wide figure that includes many ads can create a misleading impression of direct competition.

Inspect combinations and Ad Strength

Combination reports show which asset combinations served, adding context to an individual asset’s reported results. Also review Ad Strength. Google recommends regularly reviewing it and first aiming for Excellent by providing a diverse range of assets up to the applicable maximum before replacing or refreshing assets. The applicable maximum depends on the ad and asset type; do not infer a universal count from this recommendation.

Combination reporting is especially useful when one asset’s ratios appear different from those of another. It can show what text appeared together, helping you understand that the reported outcome belongs to a combination-serving context rather than to a headline in isolation. It does not turn the report into proof that a particular combination caused an outcome, but it gives you a better basis for reviewing the asset set as a whole.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ad Strength supplies another perspective: it is a reason to review whether the ad has a diverse range of assets, not a substitute for campaign results. Google recommends working toward Excellent and filling the available asset opportunities with diverse options before refreshing copy. If the ad already needs more varied assets, a refresh may be useful as part of that effort; if variety is already strong, use the report’s serving and outcome context to decide whether a particular text change is warranted.

Decide whether a text asset needs replacement

There is no single universal performance threshold in Google’s guidance that proves a headline or description should be replaced. Make the decision from several signals rather than from a single asset-level ratio.

  • Check whether the asset has had a chance to serve. Review impressions and the date range. If an asset has zero impressions for several weeks, Google says you may consider replacing it. This is a consideration—not a guaranteed diagnosis, hard minimum duration, or promise that a replacement will improve results.
  • Connect the review to the campaign goal. Consider conversion volume or value and the campaign or asset-group results, rather than treating asset-level CPA or ROAS as causal proof.
  • Check whether the ad has enough variety. Review Ad Strength and the range of available assets. Google advises aiming for Excellent and supplying diverse assets up to the applicable maximum before refreshing.
  • Look at serving combinations. Use combination reporting to understand what appeared together. A weak-looking ratio for one asset can reflect the combinations in which it served, not just its wording.
  • Confirm which text you own. Check Added by before editing or removing an asset; Google-customized text is identified with the Google AI marker.

These checks help distinguish an asset that is simply not getting served from one that merits a copy refresh. They do not produce a guaranteed uplift forecast: Google’s cited guidance supplies no outcome statistic for how much replacing text improves performance. Avoid promising a specific gain or treating a replacement as a guaranteed fix.

As a practical review, ask four questions before changing anything:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Am I looking at the right population? Confirm whether the view is one responsive search ad or the broader campaign Assets page. Remember the campaign-level active-asset inclusion conditions and 30-day impression window.
  2. Is the reporting period suitable? For full responsive search ad asset statistics, select a date range beginning on or after June 5, 2025. If the edit is recent, allow for daily data updates in the campaign-level view.
  3. What does the evidence actually say? Separate serving evidence, such as impressions, from directional ratios, and compare campaign or asset-group outcomes against the intended goal.
  4. Is there a reason to refresh now? Zero impressions for several weeks can be a reason to consider replacement, as can the need to improve asset diversity. Neither condition proves that the text is bad or that a replacement will improve results.

Replace text carefully, without assuming the report is an editor

The asset report is a place to inspect performance, not a verified button-by-button guide to editing a responsive search ad. Google’s cited reporting guidance establishes where to view the report, but does not fully establish the current exact sequence for replacing a particular responsive search ad headline or description in the editor. Interface labels and workflows can change, so confirm the live controls for the campaign type in your account before publishing.

  1. Record the candidate and its context. Note the asset text, type, Added by value, date range, impressions, and the relevant campaign or asset-group outcome. Use combination reporting if available to understand the context in which it served.
  2. Decide what the replacement should improve. Write a distinct alternative that adds useful variety and is relevant to the campaign goal. Do not make the change solely to chase a favorable asset-level ratio.
  3. Open the relevant ad’s current editing controls. Navigate from the responsive search ad to its editor using the controls currently shown in Google Ads. The exact current editor sequence is not established by the cited reporting guidance; verify the live interface rather than following an assumed path from the asset report.
  4. Review the complete ad before saving. Check the headline and description in context with the other assets and any applicable pinning or campaign settings. Confirm the replacement is the intended text and that the ad retains a diverse set of relevant options.
  5. Save, then allow reporting to catch up. Campaign-level asset data updates daily, so do not expect an immediate reflection of an account change. Use an appropriate later date range when evaluating what happened after the edit.

Keep a simple change record with the old text, replacement, date, and reason. That makes it easier to distinguish the timing of an edit from other campaign changes when you review results. It does not turn asset-level ratios into a controlled experiment, but it reduces confusion when multiple edits occur over time. If you make several changes close together, note them rather than attributing a later account-level shift to one headline alone.

After publishing, review the same scope you used to identify the candidate, with a date range that includes the post-change period. For a broader view, remember that campaign-level asset data updates daily and that the page has its stated active and recent-impression eligibility conditions. If the report has not yet reflected a recent account change, wait for the daily update rather than treating the absence of new information as an outcome.

Review Google-generated text separately

Google-customized text assets carry the Google AI marker in Added by. Google says these assets are available in channel-level and campaign-level reports, and recommends the campaign-level view as the best way to review text customization at scale. Use the marker to distinguish generated text from advertiser-provided copy before deciding what to keep.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For an individual ad, the marker helps establish that the text was generated by Google rather than entered as advertiser-provided copy. For a larger review, Google identifies the campaign-level report as the best place to examine text customization at scale. The distinction matters because the available controls and behavior may not be identical for every kind of asset or campaign. Check the asset’s origin before treating it as a normal advertiser-authored line to rewrite.

Google’s help information says individual Google-generated text assets can be removed. It also says the system may remove assets it determines will not perform after some time, when an asset is assigned Low performance, or when its source changes. Removal behavior and available controls may depend on the current campaign setup and interface, so inspect the live account before acting. Google’s text-customization guidance also announces a September 2026 upgrade to AI Max for applicable campaigns; applicability and migration status can vary, so confirm the current account-specific controls and guidance.

Do not infer that every Google-generated asset should be removed because one has a weak-looking asset ratio, or that every such asset will remain indefinitely. The report can identify the asset and its source, while Google’s guidance describes circumstances in which a generated asset may be removed by the system. For a decision about a particular line, use the campaign context, the combinations where it appeared, and the current account controls.

Common interpretation mistakes

  • Calling a low ratio a verdict. CTR, CPC, CPA, and ROAS at asset level are directional because assets serve in combinations. Review campaign or asset-group outcomes too.
  • Comparing different scopes. A single-ad asset report and campaign-level Assets page do not represent identical populations. Compare like assets within the same scope and use the campaign view for broader outcomes.
  • Assuming missing or recent data means failure. Campaign-level assets are included under the stated active and 30-day impression conditions, and data updates daily. A recent change may not show immediately.
  • Using an old reporting label. The Performance label column is deprecated in responsive search ad asset reports. Use the available metrics and a qualifying date range instead.
  • Assuming zero impressions means the copy is bad. Google suggests considering a replacement after zero impressions for several weeks, but that is not a universal threshold or explanation for non-serving.
  • Editing from a report based on another campaign type. Instructions for direct editing in a Display asset report do not establish that the same behavior applies to responsive search ads; Google’s cited Display guidance limits that direct report editing to text assets.

Another common mistake is expecting the asset report to settle a question that it was not designed to answer. It helps show what text was available and what serving activity was recorded, but ratios remain directional and figures may not add up across reporting levels. Use it as one part of an account review, alongside broader campaign or asset-group results and the ad’s variety of assets.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical decision rule

Use the ad-level report to identify what happened within one responsive search ad, and the campaign-level Assets page to assess the broader active set. Confirm the date range and asset origin, use impressions and combinations to understand serving context, and judge outcomes against the campaign goal. If a text asset has had zero impressions for several weeks, or the ad needs more varied assets, consider a refresh—but treat that as a review decision, not a prediction of improved results. Verify the current editor workflow before publishing the change.

Keep the report scope consistent, account for daily updates and reporting eligibility, preserve diversity, and review the new results at the campaign or asset-group level as well as in the asset report.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I check asset performance in Google Ads?

For one responsive search ad, open Campaigns > Ads, locate the ad, and select View asset details. For a broader campaign view, open Campaigns > Assets. Check the date range, asset text and type, Added by, impressions, and available campaign or asset-group outcomes.

Where do I find the responsive search ad asset report?

Open Campaigns > Ads, find the responsive search ad, and choose View asset details. Google says full performance statistics in these reports are available for dates on or after June 5, 2025.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I replace a low-performing Google Ads headline?

Use the asset report to identify the headline and review its serving context, combinations, and broader campaign results. The report itself is not a verified editing workflow. Open the ad’s current editing controls in Google Ads, confirm the live steps for your campaign type, review the whole ad for relevance and variety, and then save.

Why does my ad asset have no impressions?

An asset with zero impressions has not been shown in the selected reporting period, but the report does not by itself explain why. Check the date range and scope, and consider whether the asset has had enough time to serve. Google says an asset with zero impressions for several weeks may be considered for replacement; that is guidance to review it, not a diagnosis or universal threshold.

Can I judge a headline by its CTR, CPA, or ROAS in the asset report?

Use those asset-level ratios as directional indicators only. Responsive search ads serve combinations, so an asset’s reported ratios are influenced by the other assets shown with it. Review campaign or asset-group results and the combinations report before deciding whether to change the text.

The Bottom Line

Use the ad-level report to review one responsive search ad and the campaign-level Assets page for a broader view. Confirm the date range and asset origin, interpret impressions and ratios cautiously, and check combinations and campaign or asset-group outcomes before replacing text. Zero impressions for several weeks can justify a review, but it is not proof that the copy is bad or that a replacement will improve performance.
