Before buying gold jewelry, check three things: what the seller says the piece is made of, whether its marks fit the rules of the country where it is being sold, and whether the invoice records the claim clearly. A stamp or magnifying glass alone cannot prove that an item is genuine. When available, use an official hallmark lookup or arrange independent testing.
Start with the seller’s exact claim
Ask whether the item is solid gold, hollow gold, gold-filled, gold overlay, rolled gold plate, or gold electroplate. These terms describe different constructions. In particular, “solid gold” means the item is not hollow; it does not mean the piece is pure gold. The karat or fineness describes the gold share in the alloy.
Gold-filled, gold overlay, and rolled gold plate refer to a layer of gold mechanically applied to base metal. Gold electroplate refers to gold applied by an electrolytic process. Under U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) guidance, these terms have specific gold-quality and layer requirements; they do not mean the whole item is a solid gold alloy of the stated karat. Understand karat and fineness
Karat (K or kt) and fineness both express the proportion of gold in an alloy, but countries differ in their marking and hallmark rules. For example, the FTC explains that 18K gold contains 18 parts gold and 6 parts other metals, while 14K contains 14 parts gold and 10 parts other metals. Fineness states gold content in parts per thousand: 750, for example, denotes 750 parts gold per 1,000 parts alloy. A higher karat or fineness means a larger proportion of gold, not necessarily a better choice for every design or use.
Do not treat one stamp pattern as universal. A mark that is expected in one country may not be required in another, and some markets may communicate caratage through signage or verbally rather than a mark on the item. Check the marks for the market where you are buying
United States
FTC guidance says to look for a karat quality mark and, near it, the name or U.S.-registered trademark of the company responsible for the mark. The FTC advises buyers not to purchase gold jewelry with a karat mark but no accompanying responsible-company trademark. This is U.S. consumer guidance, not a rule to apply worldwide. Read the FTC’s gold jewelry advice and check the seller’s reputation and written return policy.
United Kingdom
UK Government guidance describes a full hallmark as three compulsory components: a sponsor’s or maker’s mark, a metal-and-fineness mark, and an Assay Office mark. A date letter is optional. The fineness mark is parts per thousand; the guidance gives 375 as the minimum gold content for 9-carat gold. Under the summarized UK rule, gold items below 1 gram are exempt from compulsory hallmarking; qualifying items at or above that threshold generally require the recognized hallmark. India
The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) describes the HUID-era hallmark as the BIS logo, purity expressed in caratage and fineness, and a six-character alphanumeric HUID. For jewelry bearing an HUID, BIS says buyers can use the BIS CARE app’s “Verify HUID” feature to check it before purchase. Use BIS’s consumer protection guidance and hallmarking FAQ for current details; app workflows can change.
Use a loupe to read a mark, not to authenticate the metal
Inspect the piece under good light. A 10× jeweler’s loupe can help make a small hallmark legible; BIS says jewelers should have magnification of at least 10× available to show a hallmark. The loupe only helps you see the mark. It cannot establish the item’s composition or prove the stamp is genuine.

- Look for all the marks expected in the relevant market, not just a number such as 585 or 750.
- Compare the visible mark with the seller’s written description and invoice.
- Do not rely on a photograph of a mark as proof that the piece itself matches the claim.
Get a useful invoice and clear return terms
Before paying, ask for an invoice that identifies the item and records its net precious-metal weight, purity in carat and fineness, and any hallmarking charges. BIS lists these details for hallmarked precious-metal articles in its consumer FAQ. Ask separately how the price is calculated and get the return policy in writing. Keep the invoice and any written description of the seller’s claims.
When to seek an official lookup or independent assay
If a digital identifier is available for the market, use the relevant official service rather than relying on a seller’s photo. In India, BIS’s “Verify HUID” feature is intended for HUID-marked jewelry. If the marks or seller’s claims remain questionable, BIS says consumers may submit jewelry or a sample to a BIS-recognized Assaying and Hallmarking Centre for chargeable testing and receive an assay report identifying the sample as marked. Confirm current submission details and fees with BIS or the centre.

BIS also states that when hallmarked jewelry in India is found below its marked purity, the customer is entitled to compensation equal to twice the amount of the difference, calculated from the purity shortfall and weight sold, plus testing charges. This is an India-specific consumer protection; do not assume the same remedy applies in another country.
