To check for a One UI update, open Settings > Software update on your Galaxy phone, then tap Download and install or Check for updates. If an update is available, follow the prompts. Menu labels and rollout timing vary by model, software version, and carrier.
Check for a One UI update in Settings
- Open Settings on your Galaxy phone.
- Tap Software update. On some models, the option may be called System updates or appear under About device.
- Tap Download and install or Check for updates. Depending on your device and carrier, you may see another button, such as Check for system updates or Check for software updates.
- If an update is offered, follow the on-screen instructions to download and install it. Some phones start downloading automatically; others ask you to tap a download or install button.
Samsung’s current US One UI 9 instructions use Settings > Software Update > Check for updates, while its One UI 8 guide uses Download and install and notes that extra carrier-specific checks may appear. Find the One UI version already installed
Open Settings > About phone > Software information. Samsung says this screen shows the One UI version, Android version, build number, and other software details. The exact labels can vary slightly across devices. See Samsung’s software update and version guidance.
What it means if no update appears
If the phone reports that it is up to date or shows no available update, that does not necessarily mean anything is wrong. Samsung says it is normal for no update to appear when one is not ready for that device. Availability and timing can vary by model, carrier, and network, so a specific One UI release may not reach every Galaxy phone at the same time. Check again later if you are expecting a release. Samsung says unlocked phones typically receive updates sooner than carrier-locked models, which may go through carrier review and customization; that is a general pattern, not a guarantee for an individual rollout. Use Smart Switch on a Windows PC or Mac
Samsung also supports checking for a phone update through Smart Switch on a Windows computer or Mac. This is an alternative to installing through Settings; it does not guarantee that the computer will offer a newer update.
- Open Smart Switch on your Windows PC or Mac.
- Connect the Galaxy phone to the computer with a USB cable. Use the cable supplied with the device when possible, and make sure the phone’s connection allows file transfer.
- If Smart Switch offers an update, follow its on-screen instructions to install it.
Samsung Singapore’s support guidance, last updated August 26, 2026, recommends having at least 20% battery, leaving the USB cable connected, and not using the device during the update. The phone may restart several times. Samsung also says a firmware downgrade is not possible after updating because of enhanced security policies.
