Use ChromeOS’s built-in Diagnostics app to check your Chromebook’s battery health, cycle count, and electrical current. Search for Diagnostics in the launcher, or open Settings > About ChromeOS > Diagnostics. The app is available on ChromeOS 90 and later, according to Google’s Diagnostics guide.
Open the Chromebook Diagnostics app
- Open the launcher and search for Diagnostics. Alternatively, select the time in the lower-right corner, then choose Settings > About ChromeOS > Diagnostics.
- Select Battery in Diagnostics to view the battery readings and available test.
If Diagnostics does not appear, check whether your Chromebook is running ChromeOS 90 or later. Google lists version 90 as the minimum for the app: Use Diagnostics to troubleshoot your issue.
What the battery readings mean
| Reading | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| Charge | The battery’s current charge level—the amount of power available now. |
| Health | Battery condition, expressed as full-charge capacity compared with design capacity. It is not the same as the current charge level, as described in Google’s ChromeOS device details documentation. |
| Cycle count | Battery-use history, reported separately from charge and health. |
| Electrical current | A live battery-related electrical reading shown in Diagnostics. |
| Discharge test | Measures charge and discharge rate over a fixed period, helping investigate battery behavior. |
Google’s Diagnostics guide describes the Battery panel as showing “the state of your battery, like its health, cycle count, and electrical current.” A low charge or discharge rate can indicate a battery or charging-port issue, but it is a troubleshooting clue—not a diagnosis or a universal battery-health grade. Google’s consumer guidance does not set one threshold that defines a good health percentage or cycle count.
Investigate a Chromebook that will not charge
- Make sure the charger is firmly connected to the Chromebook and to the power adapter, and check that the outlet works.
- Reconnect the charger, then leave the Chromebook charging for at least 30 minutes.
- If it still will not charge, run the Battery section’s discharge test in Diagnostics. If the issue persists, Google recommends contacting the Chromebook’s manufacturer. See Google’s hardware and system troubleshooting steps.
Why the battery may stop below 100%
A Chromebook that pauses below a full charge may be using Optimized charging, if the feature is supported and enabled on that device. Google documents adaptive charging and a fixed charging limit of approximately 80% on supported devices. Check Google’s Optimized charging guide before treating a less-than-full reading as a fault.

What the Pixel “knock-knock” reference means
The “knock-knock gesture” wording is not verified in the cited Google Pixel support pages. Those pages instead describe Pixel Device health & support and battery diagnostics on supported models: Get help for issues on your Pixel phone and Fix issues with your Pixel phone battery. For a Chromebook, the relevant built-in battery check is ChromeOS Diagnostics.
