Use powercfg /batteryreport to create an HTML report of a Windows PC’s battery capacity and usage history. To check for short-term energy-efficiency problems in system behavior, run powercfg /energy separately. The two reports diagnose different things: one tracks battery history and capacity; the other examines energy use during a brief observation.
Generate a Windows battery report

Open Command Prompt as administrator.

Run
powercfg /batteryreportand press Enter. -
Read the output path printed in the Command Prompt window, then open the HTML file in a browser.
To choose a specific location, add the /output option, for example: powercfg /batteryreport /output "C:Reportsbattery.html". Microsoft also documents a /duration days option for limiting the analysis window. Microsoft’s POWERCFG command reference lists the supported options.

Where to look in the report
Installed battery
Start here for the battery information Windows can obtain from the device. Some capacity values may be unavailable if the battery controller does not report them.

Recent usage and Battery usage
These sections show recent power states, drains, and usage history. Microsoft’s technical guidance says the report can include power states and battery drains from the last 72 hours, as well as longer-term changes in charge capacity. Microsoft’s battery-report guidance describes the report’s contents.
Design capacity and Full charge capacity
Design capacity is the estimated capacity of a new battery; Full charge capacity is the capacity the battery currently reaches. A lower full-charge capacity relative to design capacity indicates battery wear. Some devices report these values in mAh rather than mWh, so compare the values only after checking that their units match. Microsoft documents battery-report fields and interpretation limits; capacity reporting can also vary by device.

Estimated battery life
The report may estimate battery life from the PC’s observed history. That is not a guaranteed runtime: workload, power states, history, and battery-controller reporting affect the estimate. For a useful trend, compare reports from the same PC over time rather than treating one estimate as a promise. Microsoft’s guidance explains the history-based estimate.

Open Command Prompt as administrator and run
powercfg /energy. -
After the observation finishes, open the HTML report at the path printed in the console.

Microsoft Learn documents a default observation period of 60 seconds for /energy. The command also supports /output, /xml, and /duration seconds. See Microsoft’s POWERCFG options.

Run /energy separately from /batteryreport. An energy warning points to a possible efficiency or system-behavior issue; by itself, it does not establish that battery cells are worn. Microsoft’s command documentation describes the reports and their options.

When battery condition raises a safety concern
Very short battery life or visible expansion can signal severe deterioration. Microsoft’s battery guidance states: “If a battery expands beyond the device’s mechanical enclosure, stop using the device immediately.” Do not press, puncture, or continue using a swollen battery. For replacement advice, consult the manufacturer or an authorized repair provider for the exact laptop model. Read Microsoft’s battery and power guidance.
