IBM lists Guardium Data Protection 12.2 as affected by CVE-2026-81657, a critical vulnerability that could let a remote, unauthenticated attacker execute arbitrary code. Check every deployment’s version, support status, network reachability and patch state, then use IBM’s Fix Central package and instructions if applicable. IBM lists no workaround.

What CVE-2026-81657 means for Guardium administrators

IBM describes CVE-2026-81657 as a deserialization-of-untrusted-data vulnerability in IBM Guardium Data Protection. The CVE record classifies it as CWE-502. IBM assigns it a CVSS 3.1 base score of 9.8, with vector CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H: it is network-accessible, requires low attack complexity, and does not require privileges or user interaction. The assessed impact is high for confidentiality, integrity and availability. IBM notes that environmental scoring is specific to each customer, so use the base score as a triage signal rather than a substitute for your own risk assessment. Read IBM’s security bulletin.

Check whether your deployment is in scope

  1. Inventory each Guardium Data Protection deployment. Use your asset records and appliance administration procedures to establish the installed version and support status.
  2. Compare the version with IBM’s advisory. IBM identifies version 12.2 as affected. Its affected-version entries cover supported versions; if your version is omitted, unsupported or under extended support, do not assume it is safe. Ask IBM Support to confirm applicability.
  3. Establish reachability. Review your network and asset records to determine whether each appliance is reachable over a network and from which zones. The advisory cannot establish exposure for a particular environment.
  4. Confirm patch state. Check change records and the installed software or fix level against IBM’s current Fix Central instructions. Do not infer that a package is installed from a planned or approved change.

IBM’s bulletin was initially published and modified September 17, 2026. Confirm that its affected-version information and package guidance remain current before acting.

Apply IBM’s fix for affected deployments

IBM says the vulnerability is addressed in an update and lists Fix Central package identifier SqlGuard_12.0p233_FixPack for Guardium Data Protection 12.2. Go to IBM Fix Central, verify that the package applies to your exact deployment, and follow IBM’s installation instructions. Do not assume the package name alone establishes compatibility or the required installation sequence.

IBM lists “None” for workarounds and mitigations. The bulletin therefore provides no temporary workaround to apply in place of the fix. IBM encourages customers to update their systems promptly.

Prioritize and document the response

For internal triage, sort deployments by three facts: whether the version and support status are confirmed affected, how the appliance is reachable, and whether the IBM fix is installed. Use your organization’s incident and change-management process to set priority; the CVSS base score does not account for your local controls or business impact.

Record the appliance and version, responsible owner, reachability assessment, fix package or version applied, change time and post-change verification. These records help distinguish confirmed remediation from a scheduled update and provide an audit trail.

What is known about exploitation

CISA enrichment in the CVE record, dated September 22, 2026, listed exploitation as “none,” automatable as “yes,” and technical impact as “total.” This is a dated assessment, not confirmation of the current threat situation or a guarantee that exploitation has not occurred since. Check the CVE-2026-81657 record and IBM’s bulletin for current updates.
