Check the table first, identify its storage engine, and make a backup or snapshot before changing anything. CHECK TABLE or mysqlcheck tells you whether MySQL detects a problem. REPAIR TABLE and mysqlcheck --repair are for MyISAM, ARCHIVE, and CSV tables—not InnoDB. InnoDB recovery normally means starting with the lowest workable innodb_force_recovery setting, extracting data with a logical dump, and rebuilding or restoring a clean instance.
A corrupt table can worsen during an improvised repair. Work on a clone when possible, preserve the original files, and plan a controlled maintenance window if the server is unstable.

MySQL corruption is a consistency failure in a table’s data or index structures. Symptoms include errors while reading or updating rows, failed table checks, missing or impossible index entries, crashes when a page is read, or an application that suddenly reports missing records. A failed query does not prove corruption: permissions, a bad SQL statement, a full disk, a failed connection, or an application bug can produce similar symptoms.
The storage engine determines the safe response. MyISAM, ARCHIVE, and CSV expose the repair operation described by MySQL. InnoDB uses a different recovery model; running a MyISAM repair command against it will not repair the table.

Protect the original before diagnosis or repair
Preserve a tested backup, snapshot, or file-level copy before running a repair. MySQL’s mysqlcheck documentation warns that a repair operation can cause data loss, so the copy is part of the recovery procedure, not an optional precaution.
- Record the database name, table name, server version, storage engine, error text, and the time the problem appeared.
- Take a backup that you can actually restore, or clone the volume and perform the work on the clone.
- If the server is crashing, stop write traffic and copy the relevant data files before repeated restart attempts.
- Keep the original backup immutable. Do not overwrite it with a dump produced during recovery.
A backup made after corruption may faithfully preserve the damaged state. Prefer the most recent known-good backup for a restore test, while retaining the current copy for forensic comparison.

Check the table and identify its engine
Run a normal table check
From a MySQL client, check one table with:
CHECK TABLE `db_name`.`table_name`;The result includes a status and a message. Save the complete result rather than only the final line; the wording often determines whether the problem is an index, data file, or a failure to open the table.
The command-line equivalent is:
mysqlcheck --check db_name table_nameTo check every table in every database, run:
mysqlcheck --all-databasesTo check all tables in one database, name the database without a table argument:
mysqlcheck db_nameRun checks during a controlled window. A corrupt InnoDB page can make the server exit when MySQL reads it, so keep a recovery copy and avoid treating a crashing production instance as a test system.

Read the storage engine
Use the table definition to confirm the engine:
SHOW TABLE STATUS FROM `db_name` LIKE 'table_name';Look at the Engine column. You can also use:
SHOW CREATE TABLE `db_name`.`table_name`;Do not choose a repair command until this value is known. The same error message can require a completely different recovery path for MyISAM and InnoDB.
Use an extended check only when needed
A normal CHECK TABLE should come first. MySQL documents EXTENDED as a slower follow-up when the ordinary check does not explain read or update errors:
CHECK TABLE `db_name`.`table_name` EXTENDED;Run the extended check only after preserving a backup and allowing for the additional I/O and downtime. It is diagnostic; it does not make an InnoDB table repairable with REPAIR TABLE.
Choose the recovery path by engine

MySQL states that the REPAIR TABLE method is only applicable to MyISAM, ARCHIVE, and CSV tables. Treat that limitation as a hard boundary, not a suggestion.
Repairing MyISAM, ARCHIVE, and CSV tables
Repair with SQL when the server is running
After a backup and a recorded check result, run:
REPAIR TABLE `db_name`.`table_name`;The command returns a status and message. A successful status is not the end of the procedure: run CHECK TABLE again, compare the row count with the backup or an independent export, and exercise the application queries that previously failed.

The command-line form is:
mysqlcheck --repair db_name table_nameUse the database and table explicitly when the incident is limited to one object. A broad repair command can touch more tables than intended and lengthen the outage.
When an online repair is not appropriate
- Stop writes if applications could change the table while it is being repaired.
- Do not repeatedly rerun a repair on a crashing server without preserving a fresh copy of the files.
- If the result is still inconsistent, the server crashes, or row contents are missing, stop trying to “fix” the same copy and move to extraction or restore.
Use myisamchk only with mysqld stopped
myisamchk works directly on MyISAM table files. Stop the MySQL server first and confirm that no process can write to the data directory. Running it while mysqld updates a table can produce a corruption warning even when the table is not corrupt, and simultaneous access can make the damage worse.
With the server stopped and a file-level backup secured, an administrator can check or recover the table’s .MYI file using the matching myisamchk operation. Use the binary from the same MySQL installation where possible, keep adequate temporary disk space, and record the command output. Start mysqld only after the operation finishes, then run CHECK TABLE through SQL and validate the application.
Why InnoDB needs a different recovery plan
REPAIR TABLE and mysqlcheck --repair are not InnoDB repair tools. If CHECK TABLE reports corruption or causes InnoDB to fail, MySQL directs administrators to its forced-recovery procedure.

Set innodb_force_recovery in the server configuration, start with the lowest level that permits the instance to stay up, and increase it one level at a time only if necessary. Higher levels disable more normal InnoDB activity and are increasingly destructive, so use them for extraction rather than normal operation.

- Stop the unstable server and preserve its data directory or volume snapshot.
- Set the lowest workable
innodb_force_recoveryvalue in a recovery configuration. - Start the instance and monitor the error log. Do not resume ordinary application writes.
- Attempt a logical dump of the affected database or table as soon as the server is stable.
- If the dump fails, isolate the failing table or ranges and extract whatever data remains readable before trying a higher recovery level.
A forced-recovery instance is an emergency extraction environment, not a repaired production database. Remove the emergency setting after extraction and do not promote that instance as the replacement.
Dump and rebuild into a clean instance
For a table that can be read, create a logical dump:
mysqldump db_name table_name > dump.sqlCreate an empty, clean database or instance and load the dump:

mysql clean_db < dump.sqlRebuild indexes and constraints as part of the clean schema creation, then compare row counts, key ranges, application queries, and dependent tables. If only part of a table can be dumped, document the missing rows and recover them from another backup, replica, or application source rather than silently treating the partial dump as complete.

Restore a known-good backup to a separate instance when checks remain inconsistent, the server continues to crash, or an InnoDB dump cannot complete. Validate the restored instance before changing application traffic.

Validate before cutover
- Run
CHECK TABLEon the restored or rebuilt tables. - Compare row counts and representative aggregates with the last trusted backup and business records.
- Test primary-key lookups, critical joins, writes, scheduled jobs, and application error paths.
- Confirm users, grants, routines, triggers, events, and other schema objects required by the application.
- Record the recovery point and the transactions that must be replayed or reconciled.
Switch traffic only during a controlled change window, with a rollback plan and a fresh backup of the validated replacement.
Common symptoms and the right response
“Table is marked as crashed” or reads fail on a MyISAM table
Stop or drain writes, preserve a backup, run CHECK TABLE, and use REPAIR TABLE or mysqlcheck --repair if the engine is MyISAM. Recheck and compare data after the operation. If the table remains unusable, use offline myisamchk with the server stopped or restore a known-good copy.

Read the Engine column again. This usually means the table is InnoDB or another engine outside the documented scope. Do not keep changing repair options; move to the InnoDB extraction or backup-restore path.
The check itself crashes mysqld
Stop normal traffic, preserve the data directory, and treat the instance as an emergency recovery case. For InnoDB, start a separate instance with the lowest workable innodb_force_recovery setting and dump readable data. For a MyISAM file, use offline tools only after stopping mysqld.
The repaired table has fewer rows
Assume data loss until proven otherwise. Compare the repaired table with the pre-repair copy, application exports, and binlog or backup records if available. Restore or rebuild from the cleanest source rather than accepting a lower row count without business approval.
Corruption returns after repair
Repair treats the table’s immediate inconsistency, not its cause. Investigate abrupt shutdowns, storage and filesystem errors, failing hardware, full disks, and unsafe operational procedures. Check server and operating-system logs, confirm that backups complete and restore successfully, and correct the underlying fault before putting the repaired table back under load.

- Declare a maintenance or incident window and stop unnecessary writes.
- Take and verify a backup, snapshot, or clone.
- Capture the exact error, server version, table name, and current engine.
- Run a normal
CHECK TABLEormysqlcheck --check. - Use
EXTENDEDonly when the normal check does not explain the failure. - For MyISAM, ARCHIVE, or CSV, run the documented repair and then recheck.
- For InnoDB, use the lowest workable forced-recovery setting only to extract data, then rebuild or restore.
- If the server remains unstable or validation fails, restore a known-good backup to a separate instance.
- Validate data and application behavior before cutover.
- Investigate the storage, filesystem, shutdown, and hardware cause and test the backup strategy.
What a safe outcome looks like
A successful recovery is more than a command that returns “OK.” You should have an untouched recovery copy, a documented engine-specific procedure, a clean instance that passes checks, evidence that important rows and relationships are present, and a rollback plan. For non-InnoDB engines, a targeted repair may be enough. For InnoDB, the durable fix is usually extraction into a clean database or restoration from a trusted backup—not an attempted REPAIR TABLE.
