Before buying an Xbox game, open the exact game’s Xbox Store listing and compare what each edition actually includes: the base game, named DLC or season pass, supported consoles, and any explicit upgrade or Smart Delivery terms. Check add-ons separately to confirm compatibility and avoid paying twice. An edition name alone does not establish its contents, and an Xbox One purchase does not automatically guarantee a free Xbox Series X|S upgrade.
Start with the exact game and Store listing
Search the Xbox Store for the game you want, then open its product page and edition selector. Microsoft says publishers can configure distinct physical and digital products, platform combinations, and edition contents, so verify the listing for your chosen title rather than relying on a general rule. Microsoft also defines a bundle as a collection of games and/or add-ons sold together as one product (Microsoft Store policies).
Store pages and availability can differ by region and change over time. Check the listing for your region close to checkout.
Compare what each edition includes
Do not treat labels such as “Deluxe,” “Ultimate,” or “Gold” as a contents list. For each edition, record what the page explicitly identifies:

- EA PLAY MEMBERSHIP INCLUDED: Jump into Battlefield, STAR WARS, and other great game franchises with EA Play. Included at no extra cost, members get access to a collection of EA’s best-loved games, in-game rewards, and trials of select new games.
- Base game: Is the game itself included, or is this a paid upgrade that requires another edition?
- DLC and season pass: Note named expansions, add-ons, and season-pass content. A season pass or bundle name does not by itself establish which DLC products it contains.
- Bonuses: Separate playable content from cosmetics, digital extras, or physical collectibles, and decide which matter to you.
- Exclusions or conditions: Look for statements about future content, required purchases, or other limits.
Microsoft’s Xbox Game Publishing Guide explains that publishers configure product and bundle details; use the individual listing’s contents as the deciding evidence (Xbox Game Publishing Guide).
Verify Xbox One and Series X|S support
Check which console generations the exact product supports, then look for an explicit Smart Delivery or upgrade statement. Microsoft describes Smart Delivery as Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S being configured as one product, allowing customers to buy once and automatically install the native package for the device they are using. That describes how a product can be configured; it does not mean every Xbox One game purchase includes a Series X|S version.

For example, in an Xbox Wire discussion, Xbox executive Jason Ronald said that people who purchased Gears 5, or accessed it through Game Pass, would get its Xbox Series X version without another purchase. That statement applies to Gears 5, not to every Xbox title (Xbox Wire: Xbox Series X Optimized).
If the listing offers a separate paid upgrade, read its description and requirements. The Xbox Store’s S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 Standard to Ultimate Upgrade page is one title-specific example of an upgrade product that lists the content it unlocks. Its terms can change, so check the live listing and avoid buying a new full edition separately if the upgrade page says it is the intended route (S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 Standard to Ultimate Upgrade).

Check DLC and add-ons before buying them
Open the add-on’s own Store page and confirm that it is for the correct game and platform. Check whether the edition or bundle you are considering already includes it, and read any stated installation or access requirements. Microsoft’s GDK guidance says players should be able to see add-on or consumable access and be told when the game must finish installing before an item can be used (Microsoft GDK Store policies).
Do not assume a DLC listing works with every version of a game, or that owning the add-on alone grants access to the base game. Follow the exact product page’s compatibility and prerequisite wording.

Compare the cost of the content you actually want
Compare the current price of an edition with the combined price of the base game and the specific add-ons you want. Count only content that matters to you: a higher-tier edition may include cosmetics or collectibles you would not otherwise buy. Prices and availability vary by region and can change, so use the current regional Store prices rather than an old comparison.

If you are relying on a subscription, a disc, or an existing digital license for the base game, check the upgrade or DLC page for its exact requirements before checkout. There is no universal ownership or subscription rule established for every Xbox game; the product’s stated terms determine what applies to that purchase.
Quick Recap
Use this final comparison checklist
- Open the exact game’s Xbox Store page in your region.
- For each edition, note whether it includes the base game and which consoles it supports.
- Write down named DLC, season-pass contents, bonuses, and stated exclusions.
- Check the game’s add-on pages for compatibility, prerequisites, and whether the edition already includes them.
- Look for an explicit Smart Delivery or upgrade entitlement; do not infer one from the console generation or edition name.
- Compare current prices for the edition and the separate content you actually want.
- Before checkout, verify requirements tied to your disc, subscription, or existing game license.
Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
