To check an SSD, first confirm the physical drive’s reported capacity, then use a write-and-read test if you need to verify that data can be stored and retrieved across its usable space. Check the drive’s health telemetry separately: a “PASSED” or healthy status is useful, but it does not test every storage location or guarantee the SSD will not fail.
What each SSD check can tell you
| Check | What it answers | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| Reported capacity | The capacity the drive reports through its storage interface. | That every reported byte can reliably store and return data. |
| Write-and-read verification | Whether test data can be written and read back across the space exercised by the test. | Future reliability, or the condition of space the test did not reach. |
| SMART or NVMe health data | Health information and attributes reported by the drive. | That every data location was tested or that the drive cannot fail. |
Identify the drive and its reported capacity
Before running a test, confirm the model and interface (SATA or NVMe), and make sure you have selected the intended physical device. Compare its reported capacity with the capacity on the drive’s label, taking account of the units displayed by the operating system. Windows’ physical-device structure defines the capacity field in 1024-byte units; this does not establish one universal displayed number across operating systems. Microsoft’s storage-device documentation describes the Windows field.
A volume can show less space than the physical drive because a volume is a formatted partition, not necessarily the entire device. For that reason, compare the physical drive’s capacity when checking what the SSD itself reports, rather than treating a single volume’s displayed size as the drive’s full capacity.
Verify that the SSD can store and return data across its space
A capacity display is not a write-and-read check. The F3 project provides f3write and f3read to fill available filesystem space with test data and read it back. Its documentation illustrates the problem with a device claiming 128 GB while having less than 8 GB of real capacity; that is an example, not a prevalence statistic. See the F3 6.0 documentation.

- Compact & Portable: This ultra-slim aluminium external NVMe enclosure with extra silicone case is portable yet durable, and much easier to carry with this M.2 to USB adapter, making it ideal for travelling
- Back up important data. The test writes files and needs free space. Do not run it on a volume where its test data could displace important files.
- Confirm the target drive and available space. Verify the selected volume belongs to the SSD you intend to check, especially if several drives are connected.
- Run the F3 write/read workflow. Use
f3writeto fill available space with test data, thenf3readto check that data. Follow the project’s documentation for the operating system and filesystem in use. - Review the result for the area tested. A successful read-back supports that the tested data was retrievable through that setup. It does not establish the drive’s indefinite future reliability.
A space-filling test can take time and consume the free space it uses. Its result applies to the tested area and connection, not necessarily to all possible operating conditions.
Read the SSD’s health information
Health telemetry is a separate check from capacity verification. For an NVMe drive, useful SMART/Health Information log fields include critical warnings, available spare and its threshold, percentage used, data units written, power-on hours, unsafe shutdowns, and media errors. Microsoft documents these fields in its NVMe health information log structure; in that documented context, the log is controller-level.

Windows provides programming interfaces for querying NVMe identify information and log pages, including SMART/Health data. These are APIs rather than a step-by-step user interface; a compatible user-facing utility may be simpler. See Microsoft’s NVMe API documentation.

- ENCLOSURE ONLY, SSD NOT INCLUDED: This is the case you put your own M.2 SSD into, not a drive with storage inside. 100% tool-free, so the SSD installs and comes out in seconds with no screwdriver.
- FITS M.2 NVMe AND SATA: Works with both M.2 PCIe NVMe and M.2 SATA SSDs in 2242, 2260 and 2280 lengths. Bare drives only, no room for a drive with a pre-installed heatsink. It does NOT take 2.5in SATA drives or mSATA.
- 10GBPS USB 3.2 TYPE-C: Up to 10Gbps, and up to 1000MB/s in real transfers. Backward compatible with USB 3.1 and USB 3.0 at their own speed limits. Bus powered, no drivers and no external power supply.
- SLIM ALUMINUM BUILD: Ultra-slim aluminum case with an ABS frame, with a thermal pad to move heat off the drive. Light enough to live in a laptop bag, solid enough to survive it.
- IN THE BOX: Enclosure, 8in Type-C to Type-C cable and user manual. Works with Windows 7 or later, macOS 10.5 or later and Linux. Register on the manufacturer's website for extended warranty service.
Interpret NVMe Percentage Used carefully
NVMe “Percentage Used” is a vendor-specific estimate of endurance consumed, not a literal remaining-life clock. Microsoft says a value of 100 means the estimated endurance of the NVM in the subsystem has been consumed, but may not indicate subsystem failure; the reported value can exceed 100. Interpret it alongside fields such as critical warnings, available spare, and media errors rather than as a standalone failure verdict. Microsoft’s NVMe health-log documentation explains the qualification.
Understand what a “PASSED” result means
A SMART “PASSED” or healthy status is the drive’s own reported assessment. smartctl reports data exposed by the device; a health status is not a guarantee against failure and does not verify that every data location can store and return data. Use a write/read verification when the question is whether the advertised space is usable, and health telemetry when the question is what condition the drive reports. See the smartctl documentation.

Checking an SSD removed from a computer
A USB NVMe enclosure can connect a removed M.2 NVMe SSD to a computer for inspection, but check that the enclosure supports the drive’s form factor and protocol. The Windows and smartctl documentation describes NVMe health-data access but does not establish that every USB-to-NVMe bridge passes those commands through. Confirm that your utility can see the drive’s SMART data before relying on an enclosure for health checks. An enclosure is optional when the SSD is already installed in a compatible computer.
