Use the USCIS online account to check an H-1B registration. For a petition USCIS has received, use the petition’s receipt number in USCIS Case Status Online or the USCIS account associated with the case. These are separate stages with different identifiers: a registration confirmation number is not a petition receipt number. Read the USCIS notice—not just the status line—for case-specific decisions, requested evidence and deadlines.
First, identify which H-1B stage you are checking
“H-1B case status” can refer to an electronic registration or to a Form I-129 petition filed with USCIS. The right tracking route depends on which one you mean. A registration confirmation number belongs to the registration; it cannot be entered as the receipt number for Case Status Online. A petition receipt number belongs to a petition USCIS has received.
| What you are checking | Where to check | Identifier | Where to look for notices |
|---|---|---|---|
| H-1B electronic registration | USCIS online account | Registration confirmation number | Registration account dashboard and notices |
| Filed H-1B petition | USCIS Case Status Online or the account associated with the case | Petition receipt number | Case record and, when available, the account notice |
This guide covers USCIS registration and petition tracking. A registration update and a petition update are not interchangeable, and a status line is not a substitute for the official notice.
The distinction matters because these are two different points in the process, not two ways of entering the same case number. Registration information is followed in the USCIS account used for the electronic registration. If a petition is later filed and USCIS receives it, that petition has its own receipt notice and receipt number. Do not try to use one identifier in place of the other, and do not assume that a registration update is a petition decision.

How do I check my H-1B case status?
For an H-1B registration
- Sign in to the USCIS online account used for the electronic registration.
- Open the registration in the account dashboard and review its displayed status and notices.
- Use the account to follow registration updates. Do not enter the registration confirmation number in Case Status Online as though it were a petition receipt number.
USCIS’s FY 2025 H-1B Electronic Registration Process presentation says the registration confirmation number is associated with the submitted registration and cannot be used to track case status in Case Status Online. The account dashboard is the route for registration updates. Selection or other registration activity does not turn that confirmation number into a receipt number for a later petition.
In practical terms, start with the account rather than the public case-status lookup whenever the record you are trying to find is the registration itself. Check that you are signed in to the account used for the submission, then look for that registration and its notices on the dashboard. Keep the confirmation number with the registration records, but do not treat it as the number USCIS uses for tracking a subsequently filed petition.
If you are not sure whether you have a registration or a petition record, check the documents you have. A registration confirmation belongs to the electronic registration. A petition receipt notice gives you the receipt number for the filed petition. The correct next step is based on which document and case stage you are checking, not simply on the fact that both relate to H-1B.

- Find the USCIS receipt notice for the petition and copy the receipt number.
- Open USCIS Case Status Online and enter the number without dashes. Alternatively, sign in to the USCIS account associated with the case.
- Read the displayed update. If a corresponding notice is available in the account, open it and follow its case-specific instructions.
- If the case appears to be taking longer than expected, use USCIS Case Processing Times with the form, category and office information on the receipt notice. Enter the receipt date when the tool asks for it to check inquiry eligibility.
USCIS describes a receipt number as 13 characters: three letters followed by 10 numbers. Enter the letters and digits, omitting any dashes. Check the characters against the receipt notice if the system does not find the case; the registration confirmation number is not a substitute.
Copy the number from the receipt notice rather than relying on a number transcribed in an email, a personal note or an older document. Preserve the letters and digits in the order shown. The format—three letters plus 10 numbers—can help you spot a typo, but it is not a reason to guess at a character that is hard to read. Compare it with the original notice and enter it again without dashes.
Case Status Online is useful for looking up the case record, while an associated USCIS account may also make notices available. When a notice is available, read the document itself rather than treating the short online line as the full explanation. The notice is where to look for the specific request, deadline or decision applicable to that case.
What does an H-1B case status update mean?
USCIS status wording can vary, and the available official guidance does not establish a complete, current glossary of every H-1B message. Treat the categories below as a way to decide what to check next, not as a promise that every case will display one particular phrase.

Receipt or acceptance activity
A receipt-related update indicates that USCIS recorded a filing event; it is not itself an approval. For a filed petition, use the receipt number from the petition receipt notice to follow the case. For a registration, check the registration account and use its confirmation number only in that context.
Keep the distinction clear even when you see registration activity followed later by a petition filing. The registration confirmation number continues to identify the registration; the petition receipt number identifies the petition USCIS received. A registration status should not be read as a decision on a petition that is tracked under a separate receipt number.
A request for evidence
If the status or notice indicates that USCIS is requesting evidence, open the actual notice and identify exactly what it asks for and the response deadline. The notice controls the required response. USCIS’s processing-time methodology includes the time spent waiting for an RFE response in the overall interval from receipt to completion, so a request and response can affect how long the case takes.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Do not try to determine the required response from a brief status line alone. The actual notice is the source for the evidence USCIS requests and the deadline that applies. Keep the notice with the case records so you can refer back to its exact instructions. The general processing-time measure includes the period waiting for an RFE response; it should not be mistaken for a special individual prediction of how quickly the case will finish after a response.
Decision or notice activity
An online update may report decision activity or that a notice was issued. Do not infer approval or denial from a generic update alone. Open and read the decision notice to learn the outcome and any case-specific instructions.
The wording of a status line is not a substitute for the decision document. If the online record says a notice was issued, check the associated account notice when available and follow the document’s directions. In particular, do not treat “updated” or another abbreviated status as a guarantee of a particular result unless the decision notice says so.
No recent change
A quiet status page alone does not establish that the case is lost, denied or outside normal processing. Compare the case with the current USCIS estimate for its form, category and office, then check the inquiry tool to see whether a service request is available for that case.
People may report very different timelines for cases that appear similar. Those anecdotes do not establish the processing estimate or inquiry eligibility for a particular petition. Use the information on your receipt notice in the live USCIS tools, because the applicable form, category, office and receipt date matter.

A notice or document is expected
Follow the directions in the relevant USCIS notice and the case record. If the online update and the notice you received appear inconsistent, use the case-specific notice and USCIS contact channels to clarify the record rather than assuming what an abbreviated status line means.
Keep the distinction between seeing an online update and having the related document in hand. The status line can tell you that an event was recorded, but case-specific instructions belong in the corresponding notice. If something does not line up, consult the notice and USCIS contact options rather than inventing a deadline or conclusion based on the short status text.
How to use USCIS processing times
The Case Processing Times tool provides an estimate, not a promised decision date. Its result depends on the form, category and office selected. USCIS notes that some cases are grouped under Service Center Operations rather than a specific service center because work may be handled at multiple locations.
USCIS describes processing time as the interval between receiving a case and making a decision. Its method uses the time taken to complete a stated percentile of cases adjudicated during a prior period; USCIS says the figure used in its methodology is 93% of adjudicated cases. This is a historical processing measure, not an estimate tailored to guarantee when an individual petition will be decided. The live tool is the appropriate place to check the current estimate for the details on a particular receipt notice.
That percentile figure describes the basis of USCIS’s methodology; it is not a promise that an individual case will be decided by a particular date. The published estimate is also not a substitute for the receipt date and case details the inquiry tool uses. Because the displayed information can change, avoid copying a number from an older article or assuming that a different petitioner’s estimate applies to yours.
- Open USCIS Case Processing Times.
- Select the form, category and office that correspond to the receipt notice. If the tool presents Service Center Operations, use the applicable option rather than assuming the case must be tied to one named center.
- Review the displayed estimate and provide the receipt date if prompted.
- Use the tool’s inquiry-eligibility result to decide whether USCIS will accept a case inquiry. Do not treat a general estimate or another person’s timeline as proof that your case is eligible.
Use the receipt notice as the anchor for the selections. If an office option does not name one specific service center, USCIS’s explanation is that some work may be handled at multiple locations and grouped as Service Center Operations. Do not select a different office just to obtain a more favorable estimate. The aim is to check the current USCIS information that corresponds to the case record.
Processing estimates and inquiry eligibility answer different questions. An estimate offers a reference point for how long cases in a relevant group have taken; an inquiry result indicates whether USCIS currently allows a service request based on the case details entered. A case can feel slow without qualifying for an inquiry, and an estimate is not a guarantee that an inquiry will be accepted at a certain time.

USCIS’s e-Request guidance describes certain cases with a recent notice, RFE response or online status update as actively processing for a stated 60-day period. That is a qualification in the inquiry guidance, not a universal promise that all cases will be decided within 60 days or that all inquiries are barred for the same period. Use the current tool to determine eligibility for your case.
If the tool says an inquiry is available, follow its instructions and provide the receipt information it requests. If it is not available, continue to monitor the official account and status record, and check the current processing estimate again as appropriate. The status update itself does not guarantee that contacting USCIS will accelerate adjudication.
Before submitting a request, make sure you are using the petition receipt information and receipt date requested by the live USCIS tool. The 60-day reference in USCIS e-Request guidance concerns how certain recently updated cases are treated as actively processing; it is not a general case-processing deadline. Do not apply that number to every H-1B case without checking the current eligibility result.

For routine tracking, start with the official tools: the USCIS account for a registration, Case Status Online or the associated account for a petition, Case Processing Times for an estimate, and the inquiry channel for eligibility. A qualified immigration attorney may be useful for a complex notice or an individual case-specific question, but routine tracking does not by itself mean legal representation is necessary. No representative can promise faster USCIS handling.
Common problems and what to check
- The number is rejected or no case appears: Confirm that you are using the petition receipt number from the receipt notice, not the registration confirmation number. Check that the number has three letters and 10 digits, and omit dashes.
- You are looking for registration information in Case Status Online: Return to the USCIS account used for the registration. Registration updates are viewed in that account, not by treating the confirmation number as a petition receipt number.
- The online line is unclear: Look for the corresponding account notice and read it in full. The precise meaning of every current H-1B status message is not established by a single complete official glossary, so do not infer a decision or deadline from a short label.
- The case seems slow: Check the current processing estimate using the form, category and office on the receipt notice, then use USCIS’s inquiry tool to assess eligibility. A general anecdote or estimate for a different case is not a case-specific answer.
- You received an RFE or decision notice: Follow the actual notice for the evidence requested, response deadline or outcome. The online status is not a replacement for those instructions.
These checks resolve many tracking mix-ups without guessing about what a label means. First verify the stage and identifier. Then look for the account notice that goes with the displayed update. If timing is the concern, use the live processing-time and inquiry tools with the case details from the petition receipt notice. These steps keep registration tracking, petition tracking and deadline management separate.

Save the USCIS receipt notice for the filed petition and keep the registration information with the registration account. They correspond to distinct steps and use different identifiers. When checking an update, use the official USCIS account or Case Status Online record, and rely on the associated notice for instructions that affect the case.
It can help to keep the receipt notice, any USCIS notices, and relevant registration records together so you can refer to the right document when you return to the online tools. The key is not to merge them: registration confirmation information belongs to the registration, while the 13-character receipt number belongs to the filed petition. Use the identifier that matches the stage you are checking.

How can I check my H-1B visa status with a receipt number?
For a petition USCIS has received, enter the petition receipt number from the receipt notice in USCIS Case Status Online, omitting dashes, or sign in to the USCIS account associated with the case. USCIS describes the receipt number as three letters followed by 10 numbers. A registration confirmation number is not a petition receipt number.

Can I check an H-1B registration with its confirmation number in Case Status Online?
No. USCIS FY 2025 H-1B Electronic Registration Process presentation material says the registration confirmation number is associated with the submitted registration and cannot be used to track status in Case Status Online. Check the registration in the USCIS online account used for it.
Does a receipt or acceptance update mean my H-1B petition is approved?
No. A receipt-related update indicates that USCIS recorded a filing event; it is not itself an approval. Read the account notice and, for a decision, the decision notice to learn the outcome.
What should I do if my H-1B case status says USCIS needs evidence?
Open and read the actual USCIS request for evidence notice. It identifies what USCIS requests and the response deadline. Follow that notice rather than relying on a short status line.
Why has my H-1B case status not changed?
A quiet status page by itself does not show that a case is lost, denied or outside normal processing. Check the current USCIS Case Processing Times estimate using the petition’s form, category and office, then use the inquiry tool to determine whether your specific case is eligible for a service request.
Does the USCIS processing-time estimate guarantee when my case will be decided?
No. USCIS describes processing time as a historical measure based on cases adjudicated during a prior period, including a stated 93% completion percentile in its methodology. It is a reference point, not a guaranteed decision date for an individual petition.
Can I contact USCIS if the case is taking longer than expected?
Check the live USCIS inquiry tool with the receipt date and case details to see whether USCIS will accept an inquiry. The e-Request guidance describes a 60-day actively-processing period for certain cases with a recent notice, RFE response or online update, but eligibility should be checked in the current tool rather than inferred from a general timeline.
The Bottom Line
Use the USCIS account for an H-1B registration and its confirmation number; use the petition receipt number—three letters and 10 digits, without dashes—for a filed petition. Treat online status as an update, not the full case instruction: read the associated USCIS notice, and use the live processing-time and inquiry tools for timing questions.
