You can’t predict whether an automaker will survive, but you can judge how risky it looks. Read its latest annual report for cash, debt and warranty disclosures. Get the written warranty for your exact car. Test whether service and parts are reachable where you live. Check the specific VIN for open recalls. This guide walks through each step and shows what to look for, using Tesla’s filings as a worked example.
Step 1: Read the maker’s annual report, not just the headlines
For a U.S. public company, start with the latest annual report (Form 10-K) on the SEC’s EDGAR database. Note the reporting period and filing date. Add recent quarterly reports if the annual one is months old. Private makers and non-U.S. issuers disclose under different rules, and often less, so look in the company’s home jurisdiction. Thin disclosure is itself a risk signal.
Cash alone is not a verdict. You are trying to answer one question: does the business fund itself, or does it keep depending on new financing?
What to pull from the filing

A worked example: Tesla’s 2025 Form 10-K
Tesla’s annual report for 2025 shows what these fields look like. At December 31, 2025, it reported $16.51 billion in cash and cash equivalents, $27.55 billion in short-term investments, $8.18 billion in aggregate principal indebtedness and $6.43 billion in unused committed credit. These figures illustrate where to look. They are not a threshold to hold other makers to, and they don’t establish anyone’s health on their own.

Compare several years
One period can mislead. Growth spending, restructuring, tax credits or one-off items can distort a single year. Compare at least three years where possible. Look at operating cash flow, cash and investments, debt, profit or loss, capital spending, and how much was raised through shares or borrowing. The trend matters more than any single figure. No validated cutoff exists that turns these numbers into a “maker failure risk” score, so be wary of anyone who offers one.
Read the risk factors and notes
Scan them for going-concern language, debt maturities, litigation, production commitments, supplier concentration and dependence on incentives or financing. Tesla’s filing, for example, reports sourcing from thousands of global suppliers and notes some single-supplier components. That is a reminder that parts availability depends on the supply chain as well as the balance sheet.

Check how much the business leans on subsidies
Government incentives can affect both demand and your own purchase price, and they change. Tesla’s 2025 filing says the U.S. One Big Beautiful Bill Act, enacted July 4, 2025, curtailed several Inflation Reduction Act consumer incentives, including consumer EV credits. A maker whose sales depend heavily on credits can be exposed when rules shift. Don’t rely on a general article for eligibility. Check the official rules for your jurisdiction and purchase date.
Step 2: Interpret warranty reserves carefully
An accrued warranty line is management’s estimate of future warranty and recall repair costs. Tesla reported accrued warranty of $8.607 billion at December 31, 2025. Its filing says estimates draw on claims incurred and the expected nature, frequency and cost of future claims. It also states: “These estimates are inherently uncertain and changes to our historical or projected warranty experience may cause material changes to the warranty reserve in the future.”

Treat the reserve as an accounting estimate, not a promise to you. Don’t compare totals across makers without adjusting for vehicle volume, warranty exposure, claims history, accounting choices and company size. A big reserve can mean a large fleet, costly claims or conservative accounting. Compare the trend across years against the number of vehicles on the road, and watch for sudden jumps.
Step 3: Get the actual warranty in writing
The filing summarizes policy, but the contract controls. Tesla’s FY2024 filing, for instance, says its limited warranties on vehicles it sells directly can cover specific components, damage or battery capacity retention, and that extended-service-plan availability varies by model and region. Ask for the document that applies to your model year and market, and check these points:

- Basic vehicle coverage: duration and mileage limits.
- Battery and drive unit coverage: term, plus any capacity-retention threshold, such as a minimum percentage of original capacity.
- Exclusions: what voids or limits a claim.
- Transferability: whether coverage passes to a second owner, and whether it changes or needs registration.
- Required maintenance: what you must do and document to keep coverage.
- Claim procedure: where you book work and who pays for towing or rental.
- Extended plans: availability, conditions, and who stands behind the plan (the maker or a third party).
- Match to your deal: issuer, market, model year and VIN should all agree with the paperwork.
The extended-plan point matters if the maker’s finances worry you. A plan backed only by the manufacturer is only as strong as the manufacturer. Ask in writing who is obligated to pay claims.

Step 4: Test whether support is reachable where you live
A strong balance sheet doesn’t guarantee a service network near you. Map it yourself:

- List company-owned and authorized service sites within a realistic drive of your home and workplace.
- Ask whether mobile service exists in your area and which repairs it covers. Tesla’s FY2024 filing describes company service locations and mobile technicians, and its FY2025 filing describes a growing retail, service and charging footprint. Confirm what applies to your address.
- Check towing distance to the nearest qualified shop.
- Find out where collision repairs for that model are done and whether insurers accept those shops.
- Call a nearby service center or authorized repairer. Ask what work it handles, how warranty claims are booked, and whether parts delays currently affect the model.
- Check charging coverage along the routes you actually drive.
Treat seller or salesperson assurances as claims to verify, and prefer answers from the service center itself.
Step 5: Check the specific car’s recall record
In the United States, enter the VIN in the NHTSA recall lookup. Recall status is vehicle-specific and changes, so run it again close to purchase. On a used car, ask the seller or dealer to document completed remedies and list any outstanding campaigns. Outside the U.S., use your national regulator’s or the manufacturer’s VIN recall tool. How quickly and smoothly a maker handles recalls also shows how it behaves as a support provider.
How to compare two makers side by side
These six checks answer different questions, and none substitutes for another:

What this process can’t tell you
A going-concern warning or a deteriorating liquidity trend is important evidence, but neither is a forecast. A healthy balance sheet doesn’t promise good service. The Tesla figures above are examples from one company’s filings and don’t represent other makers. Warranty terms, service coverage, recalls and incentives vary by place and change over time, so verify them for your exact vehicle, location and purchase date.

No filing can guarantee an outcome. Your protection depends on who is obligated under your written warranty or service plan, so ask whether a third party backs it. Independent repairers and parts availability for your model also matter, so ask about them before you buy.
