To check an ETF’s sector weightings, start with the fund issuer’s current holdings or portfolio page, then download the latest shareholder report and prospectus. Find the sector table or chart, record its “as of” date, and identify whether each percentage is calculated from net asset value, total investments, or total exposure. Finally, read the fund’s objective, strategy, risks, fees and index methodology, and inspect the actual holdings for concentration or unexpected exposures.
Sector data is a snapshot, not a promise. Holdings, classifications and weights can change, so use the newest issuer information and filings available immediately before you place an order.
Where an ETF’s sector allocation is disclosed
Use primary fund documents rather than a third-party summary. The issuer’s website normally has a holdings or portfolio page with a current sector breakdown, downloadable holdings and links to regulatory filings. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s Investor.gov guidance says investors should read the prospectus and most recent shareholder report; both are available from the fund website and the SEC’s EDGAR system.

Each document answers a different question:
| Document or page | What to use it for | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Issuer holdings or portfolio page | See the latest published sector percentages, individual positions, NAV, closing price, premium or discount and bid-ask information. | These figures can update daily or on another schedule set by the issuer. Check the page’s date and update time. |
| Summary prospectus | Confirm the fund’s objective, principal strategy, principal risks, fees and benchmark or index. | It is a summary; follow it to the full prospectus when a strategy or risk needs more detail. |
| Full prospectus | Read investment limits, derivatives use, securities-lending policy, rebalancing rules, tax information and detailed risks. | Look for the current effective date and the exact share class or ticker. |
| Shareholder report | Find the required portfolio table, chart or graph showing holdings by category, including industry sector where applicable. | It reports holdings at the end of a defined period, so its “as of” date may be older than the live holdings page. |
| SEC filing on EDGAR | Verify the official filing, reporting period and fund identity when an issuer page is difficult to navigate. | Match the filing to the same fund, ticker, exchange and share class you intend to buy. |
Investor.gov notes that the cover of a shareholder report identifies the fund name, ticker, exchange and whether the report is annual or semiannual. Confirm those details before copying any percentage into your notes.

A step-by-step process for checking sector weightings
1. Identify the exact ETF and share class
Write down the legal fund name, ticker, exchange and share class. Similar names can describe different funds, and a single sponsor can offer multiple share classes or currency listings. Confirm the ticker on the issuer’s official page and on the prospectus cover. If you start from a search result or a market-data screen, use it only to find the issuer page; verify every number in the primary documents.
2. Open the current issuer page and primary filings
Open the fund’s holdings or portfolio page and note when it was last updated. Download the current summary prospectus, full prospectus and most recent shareholder report. Investor.gov specifically recommends reading the prospectus and latest shareholder report before investing. Keep the files or screenshots with your notes so you can tell which publication date supported your decision.
3. Locate the sector table, chart or graph
In the shareholder report, search for headings such as “portfolio holdings by category,” “sector allocation,” “industry allocation” or “investments by sector.” The SEC requires a fund to include one or more tables, charts or graphs depicting portfolio holdings by category at the end of the reporting period; industry sector is an expressly listed category. On the live issuer page, look for a sector tab, allocation chart or downloadable CSV/XLS file.
Record every sector shown, not just the largest one. Also note categories such as cash, short-term investments, “other,” unclassified securities or derivatives. Those lines can explain why sector percentages do not add to exactly 100% or why a chart looks different from a holdings list.
4. Capture the “as of” date and publication date
Write the date on which the portfolio was measured and the date on which the report or web page was published. A semiannual report may describe a portfolio several months old, while the issuer’s holdings page may be refreshed much more often. Never compare one ETF’s current page with another ETF’s older report without labeling the timing difference.
5. Identify the percentage denominator
Find the footnote or heading that explains what 100% represents. Sector percentages may be shown as a share of net asset value, total investments or total exposure. These are different denominators and can produce materially different results, especially when a fund holds cash, uses derivatives, shorts securities or has other instruments that create exposure beyond the securities’ carrying values.
6. Read the objective, strategy, risks and fees
Use the prospectus to learn why the allocation looks the way it does. Confirm whether the ETF seeks to track an index, uses representative sampling, follows an active strategy, or applies screens and caps. Read the expense ratio and other operating-cost disclosures, then review principal risks such as industry concentration, non-diversification, derivatives, foreign markets, small companies or a narrow theme.

7. Look through to the actual holdings
Do not stop at the sector chart. Download the holdings list and inspect the largest positions, security types and countries or regions. Investor.gov advises investors to “look through the index to the actual holdings of the fund.” An index label or broad-sounding fund name may conceal a large position in a few companies, a substantial cash balance or exposure created by swaps and futures.
8. Check concentration and overlap
List the largest sectors and largest positions. If you already own other funds, compare their holdings for overlap rather than assuming different tickers provide different exposure. Two ETFs can assign different sector labels to the same company, or hold the same company through separate products, so review the underlying securities and the classification system used.
9. Review trading information
The issuer page should provide the fund’s NAV, closing market price, premium or discount, median bid-ask spread and historical premium/discount information. These figures describe trading conditions, not sector allocation. Use them to understand execution and market-price behavior, but do not treat a tight spread or a price near NAV as evidence that the portfolio is diversified.
10. Recheck immediately before buying
Repeat the holdings and sector check using the newest available page and filings. A rebalance, merger, index change, corporate action or market move can alter weights after a report was published. Save the final “as of” date and basis with your order notes.

How to read the percentage basis correctly
The denominator determines what a sector percentage means. A report that says technology is 30% of net asset value is answering a different question from one that says technology is 30% of total investments. A total-exposure figure may include the economic effect of derivatives or other instruments even when their balance-sheet values are small.
| Basis | What it generally measures | Why it changes interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Net asset value | The sector’s stated value relative to the fund’s net assets. | Cash, liabilities and other net-asset components affect the denominator. |
| Total investments | The sector’s value relative to the investments included in the report. | The denominator may exclude or treat cash and liabilities differently from NAV. |
| Total exposure | The economic exposure attributed to the sector, potentially including derivatives or other leveraged positions. | Exposure can exceed the value of securities held and may not reconcile directly with a simple holdings-value total. |
Do not combine percentages from different bases into one ranking. When a footnote is unclear, read the report’s accounting definitions or contact the issuer before drawing a conclusion. If a report does not state the basis, record it as not stated instead of assuming it is NAV.
Checking whether an ETF is concentrated
Sector concentration
Start by ranking the reported sectors from largest to smallest and noting any unusually large “other,” unclassified or cash category. There is no universal SEC percentage that defines a safe or unsafe sector concentration. Whether a weight is acceptable depends on your objective, existing portfolio and ability to tolerate losses tied to that industry.

Largest-position concentration
A diversified sector chart can still hide company-level concentration. Sort the holdings by portfolio weight and record the largest positions. Check whether one company, issuer group or security type dominates. Read the prospectus for non-diversification language, position limits and any exceptions that permit larger holdings.
Look-through exposure
Read the index methodology or portfolio construction rules. A fund may hold a broad set of securities while obtaining additional exposure through futures, swaps, options or securities lending arrangements. The economic exposure can therefore differ from the market value shown in the ordinary holdings table.
Classification differences
Sector labels are not universal. A communications company, conglomerate or real-estate business may be classified differently by different index providers. For a meaningful comparison, use the classification stated by each fund, then inspect the underlying companies rather than treating labels as perfectly interchangeable.
What the prospectus tells you about future sector weights
The sector table describes a portfolio at a point in time; the prospectus explains the rules that can move it. Confirm:
- Whether the fund is active or tracks an index.
- The exact benchmark name and the index provider.
- How securities enter and leave the benchmark.
- Rebalancing and reconstitution frequency.
- Market-cap, equal-weight, factor, volatility or other weighting rules.
- Sector, issuer or security caps and any ability to exceed them temporarily.
- Whether representative sampling is allowed instead of holding every index constituent.
- Whether derivatives, foreign securities, cash or short-term instruments may be used.
Non-traditional index funds can weight securities in unexpected ways. Reading the methodology and looking at actual holdings is more reliable than inferring exposure from the fund name or index label.

Comparing two ETFs without creating a false match
Build the comparison only after aligning the measurement date and denominator. If one fund reports percentages as of a quarter-end and the other uses a later daily snapshot, label the timing difference and avoid treating the figures as a precise head-to-head ranking.
| Comparison axis | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Sector concentration | Which sectors are largest, and how different are the largest-sector weights? |
| Largest positions | Do the same companies dominate both portfolios, even when sector labels differ? |
| Date and basis | Are the percentages measured on matching dates and as a share of the same denominator? |
| Construction method | What index or portfolio rules determine inclusion, weighting and rebalancing? |
| Overlap | How much of one fund’s exposure duplicates the other fund or your existing holdings? |
| Objective and benchmark | Are the funds pursuing the same outcome, or merely using similar names? |
| Risks | Do either fund’s principal risks add derivatives, foreign-market, small-company or non-diversification exposure? |
| Costs | What is the expense ratio, and what other transaction or operating costs may affect returns? |
| Trading conditions | How do NAV, premium or discount history and median bid-ask spread affect execution? |
If a value is not reported on the same basis, write “not comparable” in your worksheet rather than filling the gap with an estimate. A difference in dates can reflect market movement or a rebalance, not a structural difference between funds.

Trading data: useful context, not a substitute for allocation analysis
NAV is the per-share value of the portfolio calculated by the fund. The closing market price is what the exchange recorded for the ETF’s shares. A premium means the market price was above NAV; a discount means it was below NAV. The median bid-ask spread indicates a typical difference between displayed buying and selling prices over the issuer’s stated measurement period.
Historical premium/discount data can show whether a fund’s market price has regularly diverged from NAV. These measures help you plan an order, particularly in a less-liquid market, but they do not tell you whether the fund is concentrated in technology, financials or another sector. Analyze allocation and trading conditions separately.

Using a stale chart
Problem: You rely on an old annual or semiannual report even though a newer holdings page is available.
Fix: Use the latest issuer snapshot for current allocation, while retaining the report for audited period-end context. Record both dates.
Comparing unlike denominators
Problem: You compare NAV-based percentages with total-exposure percentages as if they were identical.
Fix: Match the basis or explicitly mark the comparison as not comparable.
Assuming the name describes diversification
Problem: A broad or thematic label leads you to expect a broad portfolio.

- Expense ratio and other disclosed operating or transaction costs.
- Principal risks and any non-diversification or concentration language.
- NAV, closing market price, premium or discount, median bid-ask spread and the dates for those figures.
- Your existing holdings that may overlap with the ETF.
After completing the worksheet, decide whether the fund’s actual exposure matches your intended allocation. If the answer depends on a percentage that is old, uses an unknown denominator or excludes look-through exposure, obtain clarification or choose a fund with clearer disclosure before buying.
When to repeat the check
Repeat the review before each new purchase when the ETF has announced a rebalance, changed its index, merged with another fund, altered its strategy or published a new shareholder report. Also recheck after substantial market moves if sector balance is important to your plan. Ongoing monitoring should use the same date-and-basis discipline as the initial review so that changes in the portfolio are not confused with changes in measurement.
