Treat an AI-generated travel quote as a lead, not proof of a live price, available seat or room, or completed reservation. Before paying, repeat the search in the airline, accommodation provider, or actual seller’s current booking flow. Match the trip details, compare the full amount and conditions, identify who is taking payment, and check the booking directly after purchase where possible.
Why an AI travel quote needs checking
AI can help you find options, but its response may be outdated or inaccurate. Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) advises travellers to check information with official airlines, accommodation providers, government sources, and other trusted sources. Its Smartraveller guidance says: “AI tools should support your travel planning, not replace doing your own research.” Read DFAT’s guidance on travel planning with AI.
A price or availability result is also tied to the details searched. A seat shown for different dates, passenger numbers, or fare conditions does not verify the offer described by an AI response. Prices and availability can change quickly before purchase; the European Commission specifically notes rapid changes for flights and hotel rooms. Verify the offer before paying

Open the actual seller independently
Go to the airline, accommodation provider, or named travel seller using its official website or app. Do not assume a link or phone number in an AI response is genuine. Check the website domain and identify the business you are dealing with. The seller, booking platform, and payment recipient may be different entities.

Repeat the exact search
Enter the same origin and destination or property, dates, traveller count, room occupancy, and requested fare or room category. Confirm that the result applies to the trip you intend to book, not a superficially similar option.

Compare the complete price and inclusions
Review the amount due now and any later payments, mandatory charges, and other fees disclosed by the seller. Check what the fare or room includes, such as baggage, seats, room type, occupancy, and stopovers. A headline fare or nightly rate alone is not enough to compare two offers.

Price-display requirements vary by jurisdiction and transaction. In the United States, the Department of Transportation (DOT) says displayed airline ticket prices must include applicable government taxes and fees and mandatory carrier-imposed surcharges. FTC guidance for lodging covered by its unfair-fees rule says mandatory fees must be included in the displayed total and other applicable fees disclosed before final payment. EU guidance also addresses unavoidable and foreseeable charges and taxes. These are jurisdiction-specific rules, not a guarantee that every global listing presents costs the same way. Read restrictions and cancellation terms
Before payment, check whether the booking is refundable, how changes are handled, when payment is due, and what restrictions apply. For flights, compare baggage and optional services as well as the fare conditions. For accommodation, verify the selected room and its amenities, occupancy, and cancellation deadline. Confirm who is selling and what you are buying
Check whether you are booking directly with an airline or accommodation provider, through an online travel agency, or with another seller. Confirm whether the transaction creates a ticket or confirmed reservation rather than merely placing a hold or request. The channel can affect whom you contact for changes or refunds. US DOT notes that its airline refund and reservation requirement does not apply to tickets booked through online travel agencies or other agents; consumers who booked through an agent should contact that agent about refunds. Inspect the final checkout screen
Compare the checkout total and terms with the offer you intended to book. If the price changes or the seller says the seat or room is no longer available, pause. Review the new amount, dates, inclusions, and conditions, then decide whether to continue or leave without authorizing payment.

Use a normal, traceable payment method
Pressure to pay immediately or demands for payment by wire transfer, gift card, payment app, or cryptocurrency are warning signs identified by the FTC. If you are unsure about a seller or a payment request, stop and contact the business through independently verified contact details. FTC: How to avoid a travel scam this summer.

After payment, preserve and verify the booking
Save the confirmation, final itinerary or reservation details, seller identity, proof of payment, selected rate and amenities, and cancellation terms. For an airline booking, look for the airline confirmation number and check the itinerary with the airline, particularly if a third party sold the ticket. Canadian Transportation Agency guidance calls out checking ticket details and obtaining an airline confirmation number, especially for third-party bookings. CTA: Tickets, tariffs and reservations.
If the confirmation is missing, the dates or service are wrong, or the provider cannot locate the booking, contact the seller that took the booking or payment and keep a record of the exchange. The responsible party and available remedies depend on the seller, booking channel, location, transaction type, and contract.
Rules depend on where and what you booked
Price protections and remedies are not universal. The following examples apply only to the named jurisdiction and booking type; they are not a determination of your rights in a particular dispute.
- United States airline tickets: DOT says advertised or displayed ticket prices must include applicable taxes, fees, and mandatory carrier surcharges. After a ticket is fully purchased and the transaction completed, an airline is generally prohibited from increasing its price, subject to a stated exception for a possible government tax or fee increase disclosed in advance and accepted by the consumer. This rule should not be extended automatically to hotels, packages, or bookings in other countries. DOT: Buying a Ticket.
- United States short-term lodging: FTC guidance describes fee-disclosure requirements for lodging sellers covered by the unfair-fees rule. Check the rule’s scope before applying it to a particular listing. FTC: The Rule on Unfair or Deceptive Fees: Frequently Asked Questions.
- United Kingdom: Civil Aviation Authority guidance says an airline or travel provider cannot add a fuel surcharge to an existing paid flight-only booking. For package holidays, a price increase is possible only in limited circumstances specified in the contract and subject to required written notice. The CAA says a rise above 8% triggers a choice of a fee-free refund or other stated options under the relevant rules. This package guidance is not a general rule for every booking. - European Union: Commission guidance covers the treatment of unavoidable and foreseeable charges in price indications and notes that travel prices may change rapidly between search and purchase. European Commission price-indication guidance.
- Canada: CTA consumer guidance addresses total price, availability limitations, ticket details, and airline confirmation information. CTA: Tickets, tariffs and reservations.
If a booking or charge does not match what you accepted, preserve the listing, checkout details, confirmation, and payment record. Contact the seller that took the booking or payment, then consult the relevant consumer authority or payment provider if the issue remains unresolved. The applicable route depends on the transaction and local rules.
