Before paying for a used MacBook, verify its configuration on the computer, inspect and test it in person, check battery condition and Apple coverage, and make sure the seller removes Activation Lock. Complete these checks with the seller before handing over money; a listing, old screenshot, or clean diagnostic result cannot establish the condition of the individual Mac.
1. Identify the exact MacBook and match its configuration
- On the Mac, open Apple menu > About This Mac. Record the model name, chip or processor, memory, and serial number displayed.
- For more hardware details, open System Information. Match the model name or identifier to Apple’s MacBook model-identification page and its linked technical specifications. Apple’s coverage lookup can also identify a model from its serial number.
- Compare the computer with the listing field by field: chip generation, memory, storage, display size, and ports. MacBooks with the same family name can have different configurations, so do not infer specifications from the name alone.
If possible, compare the serial shown in macOS with the one printed on the case. A logic-board replacement can leave the electronic serial number different from the case serial. If the seller will not show the system information or let you verify the serial, treat the configuration as unconfirmed.
2. Inspect the Mac’s physical condition and test its features
Apple Diagnostics is not a cosmetic inspection. Look over the machine yourself, and ask the seller about repairs; request receipts if available.
- Display: View it against both bright and dark backgrounds to look for damage or visible defects.
- Case and hinge: Check for dents, separation, and signs of liquid damage. Open and close the display to check the hinge.
- Input and camera: Test keyboard keys, trackpad clicks and gestures, and the camera.
- Sound and connectivity: Test speakers and Wi-Fi.
- Power and ports: Connect the charger and confirm charging is stable. Test every port, and make sure the charger is present.
For peripherals, first confirm which ports the exact model has in Apple’s model specifications; an adapter or USB-C hub is only useful if it matches the devices you plan to connect.

3. Check battery condition and cycle count
Hold Option while opening the Apple menu, then choose System Information. Select Power to view the battery cycle count. Also check the battery-condition status reported by macOS.
Compare the count with the maximum for the specific MacBook model: Apple says cycle limits vary by model. Apple’s guidance says a Mac laptop battery is designed to retain up to 80% of its original charge capacity at its maximum cycle count. That is a design statement at the cycle limit—not a measurement of the used Mac in front of you or a guarantee of its current runtime. See Apple’s battery cycle-count guidance.

4. Run Apple Diagnostics if the seller agrees
- Shut down the Mac and disconnect unnecessary accessories.
- Apple silicon: Press and hold the power button until startup options appear, then press Command-D.
- Intel: Start the Mac while holding D. If needed, try Option-D.
- Record any reference codes and discuss them with the seller before proceeding.
Apple says Apple Diagnostics helps identify the potential source of a hardware issue. Treat its result as useful evidence, not proof that every intermittent fault or cosmetic problem has been ruled out; keep the hands-on checks in the previous section.

5. Verify Apple coverage directly
Check the Mac’s serial number on Apple’s coverage site. If you can access the computer, also open System Settings > General > AppleCare & Warranty. The seller can check the device in My Support for coverage and expiry details associated with their account.

Ask the seller to show the current status close to the transaction and confirm that the serial number belongs to the Mac being sold. Coverage can change, and an old screenshot or verbal assurance is not confirmation of active coverage. AppleCare products are not available in every region; eligibility may require a remote check, photos, or inspection, and a device in poor condition may need Apple-certified repair first. 6. Have the seller remove Find My and Activation Lock before payment
Ask the owner to turn off Find My or remove the Mac from their Apple Account, erase it, and let you begin setup. If setup asks for a previous owner’s Apple Account credentials, stop: have the seller remove the device before you buy it.

Apple explains that Activation Lock can require the owner’s credentials before a Mac can be erased or reactivated. Erasing the Mac by itself does not necessarily remove the lock, so do not pay on the assumption that setup will work later.

When two MacBooks are plausible options, compare the details you have verified rather than relying on model-family names or asking prices alone.

Weigh those differences against your workload and budget. There is no universally best MacBook for every buyer; the better choice is the one whose verified configuration and condition fit your requirements without unresolved coverage or account-lock issues.
