To check whether a Counter-Strike team is eligible for a tournament, identify the specific event and relevant dates, confirm the five-player roster, use the applicable Valve Regional Standings (VRS) snapshot, and read that event’s rulebook. Region and eligibility are not permanent attributes of a team organization: they depend on the roster, the event’s rules, and the dates those rules use.
1. Identify the tournament and the dates that control
Start with the tournament name, stage, and the relevant invite or roster-lock date. Rules can differ between ranked and unranked events and between organizers, so a team’s result at one event does not establish eligibility at another.
For Valve-ranked events, the direct-invite decision uses the most recent VRS version available on the invite date. The applicable tournament-requirements version is the one current at the event’s Additional Information deadline. Check both dates rather than relying on a ranking page or rulebook without its date context. Valve’s Counter-Strike Tournament Operation Requirements explains these version rules.
2. Verify the five-player roster
Valve defines a roster as five specific athletes, regardless of whether they are currently or later associated with a particular team organization. Find the five names attached to the relevant VRS entry, then compare them with the lineup submitted or used for the tournament. An organization name alone is not enough to identify the roster. Valve’s requirements define the roster and describe VRS-based invites.

Check continuity for a VRS direct invite
A ranked direct invite has a continuity condition: at least three athletes from the roster on the invite date must remain on the participating roster and play in every match of the event. The roster must also meet the applicable invite criteria. Confirm the condition against the event’s rules and the roster actually fielded; retaining three names on a registration list alone does not satisfy a requirement to play in every match.
3. Determine the region under the event’s rules
For a Major, Valve assigns a roster to the region represented by the majority of its players. Count the five roster members by region. If the count is tied, the Major’s priority order is Europe, then Americas, then Asia. A roster is not eligible for a regional assignment if it appeared on another region’s VRS list during the preceding three calendar months. Valve’s Major Supplemental Rulebook sets out these regional-assignment rules.

Apply that calculation only where the Major rules govern. Do not assume that every third-party regional qualifier uses the same definition or tie-breaker; check the organizer’s rulebook for that event.
4. Check the organizer’s roster and eligibility rules
Read the current edition of the event rulebook and check the provisions that determine whether the roster can compete:

- Roster submission deadline and required lineup details.
- Roster lock date and time, including the time zone.
- Permitted substitutions and any exception process after the lock.
- Qualification or invitation criteria.
- Applicable age, conduct, ban, or other participant restrictions.
Organizer deadlines are event-specific
ESL’s 2026 update says a roster is usually due 14 days before the first match and specifies five starters. BLAST’s 2026 handbook sets a roster lock at 1 p.m. UTC and generally disallows changes afterward, subject to its stated exception process. These are examples from those organizers’ 2026 rules, not universal Counter-Strike deadlines. Confirm the rulebook edition that applies to the particular event: ESL Pro Tour 2026 Rulebook Update #2 changelog and BLAST Premier Handbook 2026.
For a Major, review Valve’s supplemental eligibility provisions
Valve’s Major supplemental rulebook says a player with a VAC ban may not participate without written Valve approval. It also reserves discretion to disqualify participants. A favorable region calculation or ranking therefore does not, by itself, establish that every player or roster is eligible.

5. Report a dated finding, not a permanent status
A useful eligibility check records the tournament and rules edition, the invite or roster-lock date, the VRS date used, the five players checked, the region calculation, and any conditions that could not be verified. VRS rankings update monthly and event organizers set their own requirements, so state what was checked and as of which date rather than labeling an organization simply “eligible.”
