Before buying a used cinema camera, check the body and LCD, confirm it recognizes its battery and media, then make and play back a short recording. Test HDMI or SDI only if your setup needs it, using a compatible monitor or recorder. This quick inspection can reveal basic functional problems, but it cannot prove the camera’s sensor condition or long-term reliability.

1. Inspect the body and LCD before powering on

Look over the camera for visible damage, loose parts, or signs that a handle or accessory is not firmly attached. Gently check for rattling; Panasonic’s AJ-PX270EJ pre-recording procedure also tells users to make sure accessories and handle sections are not loose or rattling (Panasonic AJ-PX270EJ operating instructions).

Inspect the LCD for cracks, flicker, uneven brightness, or image defects. Open and reposition an articulated screen if the model has one, and check touch response if it supports touch. Use live view and, later, playback to see whether the screen displays a stable image. Manuals describe LCDs as monitoring and playback displays, but there is no universal grading threshold for a used camera’s screen.

2. Check power, media, and warnings

Power the camera on and confirm it starts normally. Check that the battery has charge, that the camera recognizes suitable media and shows available space, and that no warning is displayed. Panasonic’s procedure calls out sufficient battery charge, remaining media capacity, and the absence of a backup-battery warning before recording (Panasonic AJ-PX270EJ operating instructions).

#1 Best Overall
SONY Cinema Line FX30 Super 35 Camera, Gray
  • 20.1 MP Exmor R APS-C (Super 35mm format) image sensor with wide dynamic range
  • S-CinetoneTM for a cinematic look straight out of the camera without grading
  • Flexible ISO, Cine EI Quick and Cine EI Log shooting modes for optimized image quality
  • User LUTs can be applied to the LCD display and HDMI output and embedded in clips
  • Dual Base ISO and a 14+ stop range for wide latitude and low-noise images

Media formats and compatibility vary by model. Check the specific camera’s manual rather than assuming a card that fits physically will work.

3. Make a short internal recording

  1. Choose a record mode the camera supports, and confirm the selected media has space.
  2. Start recording with the camera’s own controls. Check for its recording indicator or tally light, and listen for sound if the camera is configured to capture it.
  3. Stop recording and confirm the camera indicates that the clip has completed and is available. Panasonic’s procedure checks the card-access LED and tally lamp during recording and after stopping (Panasonic AJ-PX270EJ operating instructions).

A brief recording checks the basic record path; it does not establish that every codec, resolution, frame rate, or recording mode works.

  • Electronically controlled optical variable ND filter (1/4 to 1/128)

4. Play the clip back on the camera

Open playback or the thumbnail view and play the new clip on the LCD or viewfinder. Confirm that the picture appears, sound is present when expected, and playback does not stop unexpectedly. Panasonic’s documented procedure specifically includes playing the newly recorded clip and confirming it on the viewfinder or LCD (Panasonic AJ-PX270EJ operating instructions).

5. Test the HDMI or SDI port you need

Port layouts vary, so first confirm the camera actually has the connector your workflow requires. Sony lists HDMI on the PXW-Z200 and HXR-NX800, while SDI is available on the PXW-Z200 only (Sony: PXW-Z200 and HXR-NX800 features and specifications).

  1. Connect the camera to an external monitor with a compatible HDMI cable, or use the appropriate SDI connection for a camera with SDI output. Check the camera’s connector and manual, and make sure the monitor accepts the camera’s output signal.
  2. Confirm the monitor receives a stable image. Check that the connector fits securely and that gentle movement of the cable does not interrupt the signal.
  3. If you plan to record externally, connect the intended recorder and make a test recording. Check the resulting video and audio. Canon’s manual recommends test recording after connecting an external recorder to verify that audio and video are recorded correctly (Canon EOS C300 Mark III instruction manual).

A working port for one signal or configuration does not prove that every output mode is supported. Confirm the mode you intend to use in the camera and monitor or recorder manuals.

SDI connection caution for RED KOMODO-X

RED warns that, under certain circumstances, powering an accessory without shielded cables can damage the KOMODO-X SDI connector. For that model, RED’s sequence is to power the accessory and ensure power is connected to the camera before connecting BNC; disconnect the camera-side BNC before removing accessory power. This is model-specific guidance, not a universal SDI procedure. Follow the manuals for the camera and accessory (RED KOMODO-X documentation: SDI).

6. Compare cameras using the same checks

If you are looking at more than one body, apply the same checks to each so differences are easier to judge:

  • LCD condition and a stable live-view and playback image.
  • Battery and media recognition, remaining media space, and displayed warnings.
  • A completed internal recording with expected picture and sound, followed by playback.
  • Stable output from the HDMI or SDI ports required for your setup.

Record modes, media requirements, and connector availability depend on the camera model. A short inspection cannot establish sensor condition, performance during long recording loads, overall reliability, or future service needs.
