You can see the exact date your Chromebook is scheduled to receive its last automatic update in Settings > About ChromeOS > Additional details > Update schedule. To install an available update, connect to Wi‑Fi, open About ChromeOS, choose Check for updates, and restart when ChromeOS asks you to. Keep the Chromebook connected to power while it downloads and installs.
Find the official update end date for your Chromebook
Update support is tied to the individual Chromebook model and its underlying platform, not simply to the year you bought it or the date a retailer stopped selling it. The most reliable place to check is the device itself.
- Select the time in the bottom-right corner of the screen.
- Select Settings.
- Scroll to the bottom-left and select About ChromeOS.
- Select Additional details.
- Under Update schedule, read the displayed last-update date.
The page normally states that the device will receive automatic updates until a particular date. That date is the device-specific answer to “When will my Chromebook stop updating?” It applies to ChromeOS updates managed through Google’s normal update system.
On a Chromebook owned by a school or employer, the same area may instead say that updates are managed by your administrator. In that situation, an administrator can control update timing or block changes, so the organization’s IT team—not the individual user—must resolve an update restriction.

Checking a model in Google’s policy schedule
If the Chromebook cannot start, or you are comparing devices before buying one, use Google’s current Auto Update policy schedule and identify the exact product or platform row. Do not estimate support from a retailer listing, a purchase date, or the year a particular unit first appeared in a shop. The schedule covers Google-approved devices and platforms, and entries can change as Google updates the policy.
A manufacturer’s end-of-sale date is a separate matter. The manufacturer controls when it stops selling a model; that date does not determine Google’s automatic-update eligibility. A model can remain eligible for updates after sales end, or reach its update deadline while old stock is still available.
What to record before checking
Write down the Chromebook’s exact model name or identifier if you need to compare it with Google’s policy table. A family name can cover several configurations with different platform entries, so match the complete listing rather than relying on a processor description or screen size. If you are checking a second-hand Chromebook, use the date shown on that specific unit whenever possible. A seller’s description may refer to the original release or sale date rather than the remaining Google support period.
The on-device schedule is also useful when a computer has changed hands. It reflects the update deadline for the installed device, while a retailer’s catalog may still show an old listing. If the device is managed, the schedule can identify the policy date even though the administrator controls when updates are permitted.
Check for and install a ChromeOS update
ChromeOS normally manages updates without a manual download from a website. Google says a Chromebook checks for updates and downloads them when it connects to the internet. You can still trigger an immediate check from Settings.
- Turn on the Chromebook and connect it to Wi‑Fi.
- Select the time in the bottom-right corner, then open Settings.
- At the bottom-left, select About ChromeOS.
- Under Google ChromeOS, note the version currently installed.
- Select Check for updates.
- If ChromeOS finds an update, allow it to download. When the notification appears, select Restart to complete the installation.
Plug the Chromebook into power before starting. A charged battery reduces the chance that the device will shut down during the download or restart. Leave the lid open and avoid interrupting the restart until the sign-in screen returns.
What the update process looks like
The version number shown before the check gives you a reference point. After you select Check for updates, ChromeOS either reports that the system is current or begins downloading a newer release. The download can take time on a slow connection. When the restart notification appears, the download is finished but the installation is not: you must restart for the new version to become active.
After the Chromebook returns to the sign-in screen, open About ChromeOS again and compare the displayed version. This confirms that the restart completed. If the old version still appears, check whether another restart prompt is waiting and make sure the device stayed connected to power and the internet.

What happens when you use mobile data
If the Chromebook is connected through a phone hotspot or another mobile-data connection, ChromeOS may warn you about the data required. The prompt lets you stop the download or continue. Choose based on your data allowance; the update process itself is the same after you approve it.
If there is no Check for updates button
Google’s update instructions note that the control may be absent when the Chromebook is already up to date. Check the version shown under Google ChromeOS, then return to Additional details and read the update schedule. If the device is managed by a school or employer, the administrator may also control whether the check is available.
Why Wi‑Fi and power matter
Automatic updating depends on an internet connection. Leaving the Chromebook connected to Wi‑Fi allows ChromeOS to perform its normal checks without requiring you to visit a download page. Power is recommended because a shutdown during download or restart can delay completion. If you are using a hotspot, consider waiting for a regular Wi‑Fi connection when the update is large or your mobile allowance is limited.

Google’s current guidance says Chromebook models released in 2021 or later receive 10 years of updates. Google’s enterprise policy describes the period as 10 years of automatic updates from the platform’s release date. Those statements describe the policy period, not one universal calendar date for every Chromebook.
The platform release date, device configuration, and the exact model row in Google’s schedule determine the final date. Two computers sold around the same time can therefore have different remaining support. Always use the date shown in Update schedule or verify the exact product/platform entry in the current policy table.
| Information you have | What it tells you | What it does not tell you |
|---|---|---|
| Update schedule on the Chromebook | The last date Google currently lists for automatic updates on that device | Whether an administrator will permit an update immediately |
| Google’s exact product/platform row | The published policy date for that approved device or platform | Whether a used unit has been modified or is organization-managed |
| Retailer or manufacturer end-of-sale information | When the manufacturer stopped offering the model for sale | Google’s update end date |
| A “Final software update” notification | ChromeOS and browser updates will stop for the device | That the Chromebook will immediately stop turning on or running existing apps |
What stops after the final software update
Google says a Final software update notice means the Chromebook will no longer receive ChromeOS or browser updates. The effects can include missing security fixes, bug fixes, new features, and compatibility with applications that require a newer ChromeOS or browser version. Existing functions may continue to work, but the software will no longer move to newer supported versions.
The notification is therefore a support milestone, not an immediate shutdown message. You can continue to use the installed system, but its browser and operating system remain at their final supported versions. Over time, websites or applications that require a newer ChromeOS or browser version may stop working correctly. Treat the displayed final date as a planning deadline for school, work, and other tasks that depend on current software.

Decide carefully about extended updates on an older Chromebook
Some eligible Chromebooks released before 2021 can receive extended updates for a total of 10 years from the platform’s release. Google marks devices that require an opt-in in its schedule, and eligible devices show the choice in ChromeOS settings under About ChromeOS.

Extended updates are not a routine update toggle. Opting in is irreversible, and the decision changes the device’s Android capabilities. Read the consequences before accepting.
| Choice | What continues | What changes | Can you undo it? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Opt in to extended updates | ChromeOS security, performance, and stability updates for the remaining eligible period | Android apps and Google Play Store access are removed; Android app-related data stored on the Chromebook is erased | No. Google says the opt-in cannot be reversed. |
| Decline extended updates | Android apps, the Play Store, and existing Android app data remain on the Chromebook | Automatic ChromeOS updates do not continue; app developers may stop supporting the older environment over time | You keep the declined state rather than switching later to the extended-update track. |
A practical decision process
- Open Settings > About ChromeOS and confirm that the extended-update option is actually offered for your device.
- Read the remaining support date shown for that Chromebook.
- List any Android apps you rely on and determine whether losing the Play Store or on-device Android data would disrupt your work.
- Choose extended updates only if continued ChromeOS security, performance, and stability updates matter more to you than the Android features being removed.
- If Android functionality is more important, decline the option and plan for the fact that automatic updates will stop.
Do not treat extended updates as a universal recommendation for old hardware. The right choice depends on the device’s remaining date and whether Android apps are essential to your workflow.
Because the opt-in cannot be reversed, do not accept it merely to make an update notification disappear. First compare the remaining support period with the time you expect to keep the Chromebook. Then consider whether removing Android apps, the Play Store, and stored Android app data would create a greater disruption than staying on the final standard release. The choice is between continued ChromeOS support with fewer Android capabilities and retained Android functionality without continuing automatic updates.

“How do I know whether my Chromebook is still supported?”
Use Settings > About ChromeOS > Additional details > Update schedule. The displayed date is more useful than the Chromebook’s age, purchase date, or the date a seller removed it from a catalog.
“Why can’t I update my Chromebook?”
First check the network connection and open About ChromeOS to see whether an update is already downloading or waiting for a restart. Connect the Chromebook to power and select Check for updates. If the page says updates are managed by your administrator, contact the school or employer that owns the device; local settings cannot override that management.
The update downloaded, but ChromeOS still shows the old version
An update is not complete until the Chromebook restarts. Select Restart in the update notification, or use the normal restart command after the download finishes. Keep the device connected to power while it reboots, then check the version again under About ChromeOS.
The Chromebook says it is up to date, but the date seems too old
Compare the date in Update schedule with the exact model or platform entry in Google’s current policy schedule. Avoid using a broad “10 years” calculation based on when you bought the computer. The policy period starts from the platform release, and the published device date is the controlling detail.

Save important work and understand that the device will no longer receive ChromeOS or browser updates. You can continue using it, but newer applications or websites may eventually require software versions it cannot receive. If that limitation affects your work, begin comparing newer Chromebooks by their official automatic-update end dates rather than by processor age or sale price.

The update option is controlled by an organization
A managed Chromebook can display “Updates are managed by your administrator.” That message means the organization’s policies, not a missing personal setting, control update timing or availability. Contact the administrator with the device name, current ChromeOS version, and any notification shown. Do not attempt to bypass management settings.
Can I download ChromeOS manually from a website?
For a normal update, no manual website download is required. ChromeOS checks and downloads updates through its built-in system when connected to the internet. Use Check for updates in About ChromeOS rather than searching for an installer intended for another model.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to do after automatic updates end
Continue using the Chromebook
Google identifies continued use as one option after final support. This keeps the existing installation and Android features in place, but there will be no further ChromeOS or browser updates. Treat the device as older software: avoid assuming that a current security or compatibility fix will arrive, and check whether the applications you need still support its browser version.
Consider a replacement
If the missing updates interfere with work, school, or required applications, compare newer Chromebook candidates using the official automatic-update end date for each exact model. That date is the meaningful support comparison. Do not infer it from a product family name, a retailer’s “new” label, or the manufacturer’s end-of-sale information.
Before buying, record the candidate’s exact model identifier, verify its row in Google’s current policy schedule, and make sure the remaining support period matches how long you expect to keep it. Google’s schedule can change, so verify the date close to purchase.
A compact maintenance routine
- Keep the Chromebook connected to the internet so automatic update checks can run.
- Open About ChromeOS periodically to review the installed version and update schedule.
- Install a pending update when prompted and restart rather than postponing indefinitely.
- Use power during downloads and restarts, especially when the battery is low.
- On a managed device, send update problems to the administrator.
- When support is ending, decide explicitly between keeping Android features without automatic updates and accepting irreversible extended updates that remove them.

Why can’t I update my Chromebook?
Check Wi‑Fi, power, and the About ChromeOS page for a pending restart. If updates are managed by a school or employer, contact its administrator because local settings cannot override the policy.
Does a Chromebook’s end-of-sale date show when updates stop?
No. The manufacturer controls end of sale, while Google determines automatic-update eligibility. Use the on-device schedule or the exact product/platform row in Google’s policy schedule.
What does a Final software update notification mean?
ChromeOS and browser updates will stop for that device. Existing features may continue working, but security fixes, bug fixes, new features, and compatibility with software requiring newer versions will no longer arrive.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Should I opt in to extended updates?
Only after comparing the remaining support date with your Android needs. Opting in is irreversible and removes Android apps, Google Play Store access, and Android app-related data from the Chromebook. Declining preserves those features but ends automatic updates.
Can I reverse an extended-update opt-in?
No. Google says the decision cannot be reversed, so treat it as a permanent choice between continued ChromeOS updates and retained Android functionality.
Do I need to download an update manually?
Normally no. ChromeOS automatically checks for and downloads updates when connected to the internet. Use Check for updates in About ChromeOS when you want to trigger a check.
What should I compare when buying a replacement Chromebook?
Compare the exact model’s official automatic-update end date, not just its family name, sale price, processor, or retailer description. Verify the candidate’s product/platform row close to purchase because policy tables can change.
