Check the manufacturer’s support page for the exact phone model and the country where you’ll use it. Verify the guaranteed security-update end date, patch cadence, Android-version upgrade promise, and date support starts; then calculate how much support remains when you buy. Brand reputation or a phone-family name is not enough to confirm coverage for a particular regional or carrier variant.
Find the policy for the exact phone and market
Start with the full model name and, where available, its model number. Search the manufacturer’s official support or security-update page for that specific device, using the country where you plan to use it. A promise for a related model or a different market may not apply to the phone in a store listing.
Check whether the listing is for an unlocked phone, a carrier-sold version, or an imported regional variant. Record the precise variant alongside the policy so you can tell whether the page actually covers the device you are considering.

Guaranteed security-update end date
Look for a month and year through which security updates are guaranteed. If the manufacturer states a duration instead, find the event that starts the clock and work out the corresponding end date. Android Enterprise Recommended requires participating manufacturers to publish an end date for guaranteed security updates; that requirement applies to devices in the program, not every consumer phone.

Security-patch cadence
Check how often the manufacturer says patches are scheduled: for example, monthly, quarterly, or biannual. Cadence tells you the intended frequency, not how many years support lasts. Samsung’s security page says selected devices receive monthly, quarterly, or biannual updates, so look up the schedule for the exact model rather than assuming all devices from a brand follow the same cadence. Android Enterprise Recommended also calls for participating manufacturers to publish update frequency.
Major Android-version upgrades
Record the number of guaranteed Android OS upgrades separately. A security-update period is not a promise of the same number of major Android releases, and security patches should not be counted as Android-version upgrades. Android Enterprise Recommended calls for participating manufacturers to publish guaranteed OS-upgrade information, but the specific promise still needs to match your model.

Work out how much support remains
Find the policy’s start date before comparing advertised durations. It may begin at launch, first shipment, or another milestone specified by the manufacturer. Xiaomi’s general Product Support Policy Overview says it typically maintains security updates for at least two years after a model’s first shipment, while noting that some models may receive three years or longer depending on actual conditions. That is a general statement, not a guarantee for every Xiaomi, Redmi, or POCO phone.

If the phone has already been on sale for some time, subtract the elapsed period from the stated support window. A longer total promise can leave less support at purchase if its clock began earlier. Compare the remaining guaranteed time, not just the headline number of years.

Check eligibility and delivery qualifications
Read footnotes and support-page details for phrases such as “select models,” country or region restrictions, carrier schedules, and possible delays. A commitment for selected devices is not automatically a commitment for every budget phone in a product family.
Motorola notes that support cycles can change as regular support periods expire, some carriers may use different cycles, and maintenance releases or OS upgrades may delay patch releases. Samsung’s 2022 announcement about up to four generations of Android/One UI upgrades and up to five years of security updates was limited to selected devices and cautioned that availability and timing vary. It is a dated example of conditional language, not a current promise for every Samsung budget phone.

Samsung’s security page says that, as of January 2024, support had been extended to up to seven years for Galaxy devices. “Up to” is not a guarantee for every model; check the current model listing and its stated schedule before relying on that figure.

If Google apps and the Play Store matter to you, check whether the device is Google Play Protect certified. Google says certified devices are tested for the Android security and permissions model and recent security builds, and recommends shoppers look for the Play Protect logo. Certification is a useful security and compatibility baseline, but it does not say how long a particular phone will receive future updates.

Compare candidate phones side by side
Use a short comparison table before choosing between models. Fill it from each manufacturer’s page for the exact local variant; do not infer a missing value from the brand or another model.

Keep proof of the policy you checked
Save the support-page link or a screenshot together with the exact product variant. Recheck the policy near purchase if the phone has been available for a while, or if you are buying a refurbished or imported device; the listing may not be the same variant covered by the page you first found.
- Identify the full model and the country where it will be used.
- Confirm the support page covers the exact regional and carrier variant.
- Write down the security-update end date and patch cadence.
- Record the guaranteed Android-version upgrades separately.
- Find the support start date and calculate remaining support at purchase.
- Check qualifications and rollout caveats, then save the evidence.
Android’s Open Source Project security best practices say Android devices should receive ongoing security support for at least two years from launch. That is platform guidance, not proof that every retail phone currently on sale meets the recommendation. There is no single update duration established for all budget Android phones: promises depend on the manufacturer, model, market, and stated conditions.
