For most phones, the habits that matter most are keeping the device cool while it charges, using a charger and cable the phone supports, and turning on the manufacturer’s optimized charging or charge-limit setting. You do not need to push every charge to 100%, and you do not need to avoid charging overnight if those features are active. The specifics depend on the brand and model, so the guidance below separates what Apple and Google state from what they do not claim.
Do you need to charge to 100% every time?
No. Both Apple and Google describe features that reduce the time a phone spends at full charge, but they do it in different ways.
Apple: Optimized Battery Charging
Apple says Optimized Battery Charging reduces the time an iPhone spends fully charged. It delays the final part of charging in some circumstances so the phone reaches 100% close to the time you usually unplug it. Apple’s battery guidance is dated April 8, 2025 on its support site.
Google Pixel: 80% limit and Adaptive Charging
On Pixel, Google describes an 80% limit as a way to prioritize long-term battery health. It suits people who usually end the day with charge left over. You can turn it off when you need more runtime. The 80% limit is available on Pixel 6a and later, according to Google Pixel Help.

Adaptive Charging, on eligible Pixel phones, works differently. Google Pixel Help states: “This setting completes charging right before you typically unplug, so your phone isn’t at 100% for a long time.” Google also says the optimization may need about 14 days to learn your charging habits.
Is it okay to leave a phone charging overnight?
Manufacturer guidance supports overnight charging when optimized charging is on and the phone stays within its temperature range. The reason is heat, not the hours themselves: an optimization feature limits how long the battery sits at full charge, and a cool room limits the heat that builds up while it charges. Neither company publishes a figure for how many years a particular charging habit adds to battery life, so treat these steps as protective habits rather than guaranteed gains.

Keep the phone within its temperature range
Heat is the most consistent warning in the official guidance. Charging warms the battery, and when the phone is already hot, it may slow, pause, or limit charging. Each manufacturer publishes its own limits:
| Device maker | Stated ideal or limit | Source and date |
|---|---|---|
| Apple (iPhone) | Ideal ambient range 16°C to 22°C (62°F to 72°F). Do not use or charge in ambient temperatures above 35°C (95°F), where battery lifespan may be permanently reduced. | Apple Support, “Charge and maintain your iPhone battery,” dated April 8, 2025 |
| Google (Pixel, referenced models) | Do not use or charge below 0°C (32°F) or above 35°C (95°F). | Google Pixel Help; the retrieved page did not show a publication date |
These are device-specific thresholds. They do not describe a safe temperature for every phone, and you should not assume the iPhone figure applies to an Android device or the Pixel figure applies to an iPhone.

In practice, charge the phone on a hard, flat surface away from direct sunlight, a car dashboard, or bedding that traps heat. Remove a thick case if the phone runs warm. If the phone becomes unusually hot or charging pauses, unplug it, move it somewhere cooler, and let it cool before charging again. Do not try to bypass the temperature protection.
Turn on optimized charging or a charge limit
Use the manufacturer’s feature if your phone has one. Feature names, eligible models, and menu locations change with the model and software version, so search the Settings app for the feature name rather than relying on a fixed path. On Apple devices, look for Optimized Battery Charging. On Pixel, look for Adaptive Charging or the 80% limit, and confirm the setting is available on your model before relying on it.

Choose a charger and cable the phone supports
The right accessory depends on the phone. Speed and supported power differ by model, so a higher-wattage charger does not make every phone charge faster.

- Pixel: Google lists the USB-C cables and compatible power adapters for each Pixel model in Pixel Help. Check the model’s list before buying.
- Laptop or multiport adapter: A laptop USB port, a hub, or a multiport adapter that shares its power with other devices may deliver less power than the charger label suggests.
- Wall outlet: When speed matters, a wall outlet with a supported charger is more reliable than a low-power port.
If your current charger is damaged, missing, or too slow for your phone, a model-compatible USB-C Power Delivery wall charger and cable are reasonable replacements. Confirm the product’s specifications against your exact phone model first. If your charger works and the phone charges at a reasonable rate, you do not need new equipment.

Why charging slows or pauses
Charging speed changes during normal use. The most common causes are:
- Near full charge: Phones typically slow as they approach 100%, and optimized charging can hold the battery there.
- High temperature: The phone may reduce speed or pause to protect the battery. Google notes that Pixel phones may adjust charging to manage temperature.
- Demanding apps: Processor-heavy use, such as games, video editing, or navigation, can reduce charging speed. Apple recommends limiting demanding apps while charging when speed matters.
- Weak power source: A low-output port, a long or worn cable, or an unsupported adapter can limit power.
If charging stops at 80%, check whether the 80% limit is turned on. On Pixel, that setting is the first thing to check.
Wireless charging
Wireless charging is also device-specific. Check your phone’s specifications to confirm it supports wireless charging and whether your case or stand is compatible. Temperature management can pause wireless charging on some devices, just as it can with wired charging.
