To extend rechargeable-battery life, avoid routinely draining cells completely, keep them cool, and use a charger designed for the battery’s chemistry and device. Storage advice depends on the type: lithium-ion is generally best stored partially charged, while NiMH cells need protection from prolonged overcharging and slow drain from equipment.
Charge according to the battery chemistry
Lithium-ion and nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) batteries use different charging methods. A charger suitable for one chemistry should not be assumed appropriate for the other. Use the charger or charging electronics specified for your battery or device. Energizer’s battery-care guidance also advises following the manufacturer’s directions.
Lithium-ion: partial charging is fine
You do not need to run a lithium-ion battery flat before recharging it. Battery University’s charge guidance says deep discharge wears batteries and that partial charging is acceptable. For everyday use, avoid unnecessary full discharges and heat while charging. There is no single daily charge-percentage limit established for all lithium-ion devices here, so follow the device maker’s instructions if it specifies one.
NiMH: use a NiMH charger and avoid prolonged overcharge
Removable NiMH cells need a charger designed for NiMH. Energizer’s 2018 NiMH handbook identifies charge control and minimizing overcharge exposure, duration, and rate as important factors in battery life. A charger that detects completion and stops or limits further charging helps avoid leaving cells on sustained charge. Do not assume every charger has those features; check the exact model’s manual.

Store batteries based on their chemistry
Lithium-ion: store partially charged
For lithium-ion batteries being put away for an extended period, Battery University recommends about 40% state of charge in a cool, dry place. This is general technical guidance from its storage article, last updated October 27, 2021—not a universal manufacturer target for every device. Follow a device or battery maker’s specific storage instructions when available. Avoid storing a lithium-ion battery fully discharged, since self-discharge can take it lower still.
NiMH: prevent standby drain and prolonged neglect
NiMH storage charge level is less critical in Battery University’s general guidance, but a cool, dry place is still recommended. Energizer’s consumer-care guidance advises recharging rechargeable batteries at least every 6–9 months and not leaving them discharged or unused for extended periods. Treat that interval as Energizer’s general advice, not a universal schedule for every chemistry or model.

- Save Time & Charge More - Bonai AA AAA battery charger 16 bay for NiMH rechargeable batteries can charge any quantity in any slot. Single, double or triple ones can be charged, and not necessary to put them in neighboring slots. Besides, you can also mix charge AA and AAA batteries, as long as they are NiMH batteries
- Helpful LED Indicators - When you first plug it in, the LED lights run through a cycle then turn solid green on all empty ports to indicate power to each port. When you insert a battery to charge, the light will turn solid red, only on the port(s) containing the battery, to indicate the battery is charging. The light turns solid green when charging is complete. If a defective battery has been inserted, red light flashes
- Charging with Convenience- Attached with a regular AC power cord, without power brick, it can compatible with a wide range of voltage from 110V to 240V and input current is 0.5A(max.). Output voltage is 1.4V(DC) and current range 250-500mA. The more batteries you charge, the longer the time spend. *NOTE: It can not charge alkaline nor lithium battery
- Safe & Smart Battery Charger - This NiMH battery charger provides protection on overcharging, overvoltage, overcurrent, overheating, short-circuit and reverse-polarity. It is normal that the aa battery charger becomes heated while charging, just don't cover anything on it and keep it in a well-ventilated place. It is also a silent charger and doesn't emit any buzz
- WARRANTY: Bonai 16-bay battery charger for AA AAA NiMH batteries has 24/7 customer service available, you can rest assured to buy our battery charger and it has 12 months guarantee, if any questions, please don't hesitate to contact us
If you will store NiMH cells in equipment for a long time, remove them when the device may draw standby current while switched off. Energizer’s handbook warns that continued drain can over-discharge cells and contribute to leakage or corrosion in the device.
Keep charging and storage temperatures in range
Energizer recommends charging at room temperature, defined in its care guidance as 68°F to 72°F. Battery University’s temperature guidance warns against charging ordinary consumer lithium-ion cells below 0°C/32°F: charging below freezing can cause lithium plating and permanently degrade performance and safety. Specialty cells may be designed for cold charging, so use the temperature limits specified for your particular battery or device rather than applying a general exception.

Choose a compatible charger, not just a fast one
When buying a charger for removable NiMH AA or AAA cells, check its chemistry and cell-size compatibility, how it handles individual cells, and whether it detects a full charge and shuts off. Also check for bad-cell indication and whether the charging rate is appropriate for the battery maker’s recommendations. Some paired-bay chargers require cells to be charged in pairs; an older Energizer FAQ notes that a lone, unpaired cell may not charge in some models, so consult the manual for the exact charger.
As one product-specific example, Energizer’s North America Recharge Value Charger page lists AA/AAA compatibility, overcharge protection, automatic shutoff when charging is complete, and bad-battery indication. Product features can change; confirm current compatibility and instructions before use.
