There is no universal way to charge a tablet without using its charging port. In most cases the tablet still needs a physical connection to a power source, either through its own port or through a dock that is designed for that exact model. Which route is open to you depends on two things: whether the port still works, and whether your tablet has a documented alternative such as a dock or charging contacts.
Start by identifying the exact tablet model
Charging docks and other alternate connections are tied to specific models. A dock that works for one tablet does not establish that it works for another, even from the same brand. Find the model number in Settings (the About section on most Android tablets, or About This iPad on iPadOS) or on the label on the back of the device, then search the manufacturer’s support pages for that model name.
Option 1: Charge through the port with a different power source
If the port is intact but your original charger is missing or broken, the port itself is still the connection. What changes is the power source feeding it.

Google’s current instructions for the Pixel Tablet describe the wired method directly: “To charge your Pixel Tablet without a Charging Speaker Dock, plug a USB cable into your tablet’s USB-C port from a power adaptor plugged into a power source.” The same page says you can use a USB-C cable or attach the tablet to a Charging Speaker Dock. Any replacement cable and adapter should match the port type your tablet actually has. Look for USB-C on the tablet end, and check the manufacturer’s listed wattage if the tablet charges slowly or not at all with a phone charger.
Charge from a computer over USB
A computer is an alternate power source, not a way around the port. You still need a cable plugged into the tablet.

Use a data-capable USB-C cable from a computer port that supplies enough power. Charging from a low-power USB port or a hub may be very slow or stop altogether.

Option 2: Use a dock that is documented for your model
Some tablets can charge without a cable being plugged into the tablet by sitting in a dock. This is a model-specific accessory, not a general-purpose fix.

Google Pixel Tablet Charging Speaker Dock
Google documents charging the Pixel Tablet by attaching it to its Charging Speaker Dock. This is the clearest example of an official alternative, but it applies only to the Pixel Tablet and only to the dock Google sells for it.
Enterprise and rugged tablets
Business-grade hardware often ships with purpose-built docks or cradles. Zebra documents compatible docks for its ET6-series devices in its quick start guide. If your tablet is a work device, check whether your organization already has a cradle or charging stand for it before buying anything.

What is not established
Several commonly suggested workarounds are not supported by the manufacturer documentation reviewed for this article:

- Universal wireless charging. None of the official sources establish a general way to wirelessly charge tablets, and none show a compatible receiver for an unspecified model.
- Generic docks. A dock sold as “tablet charging dock” does not mean it fits or charges your tablet. Only use a dock that the manufacturer lists for your model.
- Reverse charging. Some tablets can power another device through an OTG cable. Huawei’s guide explains that feature, but it does not charge the tablet itself. Source: Huawei Support, Reverse Charging with an OTG Cable.
- Forcing a cable or using an unverified adapter. A loose or damaged port can be made worse by pushing harder or trying an adapter that is not designed for the tablet.
When the port is the problem
If the port is loose, wobbles, or shows signs of damage, the issue is no longer about finding a charger. Google’s guidance for the Pixel Tablet is to contact support if the port is loose or looks burned, melted, or corroded. For any other brand, use the manufacturer’s own troubleshooting and repair path. Local repair shops can sometimes replace a port, but the result depends on the model and the extent of the damage, so ask for a diagnosis before agreeing to work.
Troubleshooting by symptom

Searching for the right answer
Readers often search for phrases such as “doesn’t charge with a USB-C cable and power adapter” or “USB-C port is damaged.” These point to two different problems. If the cable and adapter work with another device, the tablet’s port is the more likely culprit. If the port is intact but nothing charges, check the power source first before assuming a hardware fault.
Practical sequence
- Note the tablet’s exact model number.
- Inspect the USB-C port for looseness or visible damage. Do not force anything into it.
- If the port is fine, try a known-good USB-C cable and power adapter.
- If you have a computer, try a direct USB connection to a full-power port, accepting that charging may be slower.
- Check the manufacturer’s page for a model-specific dock, and buy only one it lists for your model.
- If the port is damaged or loose, contact the manufacturer’s support rather than attempting a fix.
For Pixel Tablet owners, Google’s instructions describe both the wired and dock methods, so the choice comes down to which accessories you already have. For other tablets, the port remains the constant: if it is working, you can charge through it with a different power source, and if it is not, the next step is repair rather than a workaround.
