Change your X username on the web: go to Settings and privacy → Account → Username, enter an available handle, then select Done. Your followers, Direct Messages, and replies stay with your account, but your old handle becomes available to someone else as soon as you change it.
What your X username is—and what it is not
Your username is the unique @handle that appears in your profile URL and in replies and Direct Messages. People can use it to find you, and you can use it to log in. It is different from your display name, which appears beside the handle. X allows display names of up to 50 characters. X Help Center: How to change your username
Change your username on X’s website
- Sign in at x.com or mobile.x.com.
- Open Settings and privacy.
- Select Account, then Username.
- Enter the new username you want.
- Select Done to save.
X’s help pages give conflicting guidance about mobile-app support: its change guide includes iOS and Android steps, while its troubleshooting page says username changes are not supported in the apps and directs users to the web. The website route is therefore the safest documented method; if your current interface differs, follow the options shown in X.
Choose a username that meets X’s rules
- It must be more than 4 characters and no more than 15 characters.
- It can contain letters, numbers, and underscores, but not spaces.
- Nonofficial accounts cannot use “X” or “Admin” in the username.
- The handle must be available. A name may be unavailable because it is claimed, reserved, or tied to a suspended or deactivated account.
If your preferred handle is claimed, X suggests trying underscores before or after it. X says it cannot release an inactive username on request, and deactivating an account does not immediately free its username. X Help Center: Why can’t I select the username I want?

What happens when you change your handle
Your existing followers, Direct Messages, and replies remain on your account. Followers will see the new username beside your profile photo. The old username becomes available to other users immediately, so someone else could claim it after you switch. X Help Center: How to change your username
- Update profile links, website pages, bios, and other references you control.
- Let followers know about the change so they can recognize your account and direct replies or messages to the new handle.
Move a username between accounts you own
You can transfer a handle from one of your accounts to another by first changing the username on the account that currently holds it, then selecting the released handle on the receiving account.

If your account has a blue checkmark
X says changing the username on an account with a blue checkmark can temporarily remove the checkmark while the account is reviewed again. Its FAQ says the review may take several business days, but does not promise a specific restoration time. X Help Center: X Premium FAQ
