To change the name people see for your iPhone or iPad in AirDrop, rename the device in Settings > General > About > Name. To control who can send you files, change the separate AirDrop receiving setting in Control Center. On iPhone and iPad, you can choose Contacts Only or Everyone for 10 Minutes; on Mac, choose Contacts Only or Everyone.
Change the name shown in AirDrop
On iPhone
- Open Settings.
- Tap General, then About.
- Tap Name, enter the name you want, and finish editing.
Apple uses this device name for AirDrop as well as iCloud, Bluetooth, Personal Hotspot, and your computer. See Apple’s iPhone instructions for changing the device name.
On iPad
Go to Settings > General > About > Name and enter the new name. Apple says the iPad’s device name is also used by AirDrop and connected services. See the iPad instructions.

The cited Apple guidance for changing an iPhone or iPad name does not establish a Mac renaming path. On Mac, choose the receiving audience in AirDrop settings as described below; the AirDrop menu and device name are separate from the iPhone and iPad steps above.

Choose who can send you AirDrop items
On iPhone or iPad
- Open Control Center.
- Touch and hold the connectivity controls in the upper-left group.
- Tap AirDrop.
- Choose Contacts Only or Everyone for 10 Minutes. Apple notes that these choices are available only on devices that meet AirDrop’s minimum system requirements.
Apple’s AirDrop guide for iPhone covers the receiving options and device requirements. Menu details may differ by system version.
On Mac
Open Control Center from the menu bar, open AirDrop, and choose Contacts Only or Everyone. Apple also documents opening AirDrop from Finder. Its Mac guidance describes Everyone as a receiving choice but does not specify the same ten-minute timeout documented for iPhone and iPad. See Apple’s Mac AirDrop instructions.

What each receiving option means

Apple’s support article about the Everyone setting documents the ten-minute behavior for iPhone and iPad. Apple’s security guide, published February 18, 2021, described Contacts Only as the default in its design description; because that guidance is dated, inspect the current setting on your device instead of relying on that description. Contacts Only relies on a matching identifier, not just a familiar name. The sender’s Apple Account email address or phone number must be present in the contact card saved on the recipient’s device. If the person does not appear, verify that detail in Contacts. Apple explains the matching requirement in its AirDrop guide.

- Disconnect Personal Hotspot while using AirDrop.
- If Contacts Only is selected, check that the sender’s Apple Account email address or phone number is saved in your contact card for them.

Using an AirDrop code on newer systems
On iOS 26.2, iPadOS 26.2, or macOS 26.2 and later, a sender who is not in your contacts may be asked to enter an AirDrop code provided by the recipient. After the code is entered, the two people can share for 30 days without entering it again. The recipient can end that access sooner in Contacts > Other Known > Forget This Person. This behavior is specific to those system versions and may differ on other releases. Apple documents the code flow in its iPhone AirDrop guide.

How AirDrop handles a transfer
Apple says AirDrop uses Bluetooth Low Energy to discover nearby devices, peer-to-peer Wi-Fi to transfer data, and TLS encryption to protect the connection. If a transfer has started and the devices leave Bluetooth or Wi-Fi range, Apple says it can continue over the internet. To avoid cellular data for AirDrop, turn off Use Cellular Data under Settings > General > AirDrop. See Apple’s security guide and current iPhone guide.
