To change where new photos and videos from the Windows Camera app are saved, go to Start > Settings > System > Storage > Advanced storage settings > Where new content is saved. Choose a drive under New photos and videos will save to, then select Apply if prompted. This changes the destination for new Camera app captures—not every app’s Save location or the Windows Pictures folder.
Change the destination for new Camera app photos
- Open Start > Settings > System > Storage.
- Expand Advanced storage settings, then select Where new content is saved.
- Under New photos and videos will save to, choose the drive you want to use.
- Select Apply if Windows prompts you to confirm the change.
Microsoft says Camera app captures use the Camera Roll folder by default. After changing the drive, take a test picture and check the new location. If you want to use an external drive and it is not listed, connect it and check again. A removable drive must be connected to save to it or open files stored on it. Microsoft’s Camera Roll guidance covers the default folder and related troubleshooting.
Which image folder or save setting do you mean?
“Where are my pictures saved?” can refer to several different things. The right setting depends on which app is creating the image and whether you want to change storage, display, or cloud backup.

Changing where another app saves an image
The Camera setting does not set the default for every program. When saving an image from a browser or other desktop app, check its Save or Save As dialog and choose the folder you want. OneDrive also describes choosing OneDrive or This PC and then a folder when saving. See Microsoft’s guidance on OneDrive save locations.

Adding a folder to Photos without moving its files
To see images from another location in Microsoft Photos, use Gallery’s folder list and choose Add folder. This adds the folder to the gallery view; it does not relocate the images or upload them. Microsoft’s Photos app instructions explain folder management.
Backing up folders with OneDrive
For cloud backup, configure OneDrive’s Sync and backup controls to select the Windows folders you want protected. This is separate from changing the Camera app’s capture drive and from adding a folder to Photos. Read Microsoft’s instructions for backing up folders with OneDrive. Move existing pictures or use an external drive
Changing the Camera setting determines where new captures go; it does not move photos already saved elsewhere. To free space, you can move less frequently used personal files, including photos, to external storage such as a USB drive or SD card. Microsoft describes this option in its guide to freeing up drive space in Windows.

If Camera Roll is missing
If Camera reports that Camera Roll is missing, Microsoft’s troubleshooting instructions say to create a folder named Camera Roll on the OS disk and include it in the Camera Roll library. If the error continues, open the folder’s Properties, go to Security, and check that your signed-in user has Write permission. The same guidance notes that when Microsoft storage is over its limit, new files may not upload, edit, or sync to OneDrive; that is a cloud-capacity issue, separate from the local folder path. The Windows Pictures known folder is not the same setting as the Camera app’s destination for new captures. File Explorer lets you browse known folders such as Pictures and move ordinary files and folders, but Microsoft’s referenced instructions do not establish a complete procedure for relocating the Pictures known folder itself. Avoid treating a simple drag of that special folder—or an improvised registry change—as equivalent to changing the Camera app’s save drive. OneDrive sync behavior is also distinct from an ordinary file move: syncing can propagate file changes through OneDrive, while adding a folder to Photos only changes what appears in the gallery. Microsoft explains syncing in its guide to syncing computer files and folders with OneDrive.
