You change haptic click intensity in Windows 11 from Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Touchpad, using the Touchpad feedback intensity control. That control appears only on touchpads with haptic (vibration-based) click hardware, so if you don’t see it, your touchpad or its driver is the first thing to check.

Change the haptic click intensity

  1. Open Start and select Settings, or press Windows key + I.
  2. In the left pane, select Bluetooth & devices.
  3. Select Touchpad.
  4. Find Touchpad feedback and adjust its intensity control to make the simulated click feel stronger or weaker.

Test the result by pressing the touchpad a few times. The Windows interface moves the control in 25-point steps across a 0 to 100 range. Microsoft’s precision touchpad tuning guidance describes the underlying intensity as a relative level, not a calibrated physical force, so two settings that differ by one step will not map to a measurable difference in grams of pressure.

Haptic intensity and click-force sensitivity are different settings

Windows separates two haptic parameters, and they change different things:

Setting What it changes Where you see it
Haptic feedback intensity The relative strength of the simulated vibration or click sensation you feel Touchpad feedback intensity control in Settings
Click-force sensitivity How much press force is needed before a click registers Documented as a separate parameter in Microsoft’s TOUCHPAD_PARAMETERS_V1 reference; the exact user-facing control is not stated in the sources reviewed
Touchpad sensitivity General input behavior of the touchpad, such as pointer response Touchpad settings in Windows; a different setting from haptic intensity

If a click feels too soft but still registers too easily, the intensity control is the one to change. If you have to press hard before a click registers, the question is click-force sensitivity, which is a separate parameter. Microsoft’s API reference describes the haptic intensity field as “the relative intensity of the touchpad’s haptic feedback (if supported),” and describes click-force sensitivity separately, also as a hardware-dependent behavior.

Why the Touchpad feedback control may be missing

A missing Touchpad feedback entry does not on its own indicate a Windows fault. Microsoft’s Windows Precision Touchpad hardware guidance states that haptic feedback intensity is configurable by the host only when the touchpad supports it, so the control is exposed only for compatible hardware. Some touchpad features in Windows also work only with precision touchpads, so a non-precision device will lack several touchpad options.

Work through these checks in order:

  • Confirm the touchpad type. Check the PC or touchpad specifications for haptic or force-feedback click support. Many laptops use mechanical clicks, and the control will not appear on them.
  • Check for driver updates. Open Windows Update from Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates, then look for optional driver updates. You can also open Device Manager, expand Mice and other pointing devices, right-click the touchpad, and select Update driver.
  • Reinstall the driver if updating does not help. In Device Manager, right-click the touchpad, select Uninstall device, restart the PC, and let Windows reinstall it.
  • Contact the PC manufacturer. If the touchpad should support haptic feedback and the control still does not appear after driver steps, Microsoft recommends contacting the manufacturer for device-specific support.

Microsoft’s touchpad troubleshooting guidance covers these driver steps and the manufacturer escalation path. The exact menu labels can vary slightly between Windows 11 builds and by manufacturer, so match the wording above to what your screen shows.

Practical guidance

Start with a middle setting and adjust in one-step increments so you can compare clicks side by side. Keep in mind that the intensity setting changes only the simulated feedback; it does not change how far the touchpad physically moves, because a haptic touchpad has a rigid, non-moving surface. If a stronger setting feels harsh during normal typing or dragging, return to a lower step rather than changing click-force sensitivity to compensate.

No additional hardware or software is needed for this task. The control is built into Windows and works only through the touchpad’s own haptic support.
