Use ax.tick_params(direction='in') to point ticks inward on a Matplotlib Axes. Replace 'in' with 'out' or 'inout' to point them outward or in both directions.
Set tick direction for an Axes
Call tick_params on the Axes you want to change:
ax.tick_params(direction='in')Matplotlib documents three values for direction:
'in': ticks point into the Axes.'out': ticks point outside the Axes.'inout': ticks extend in both directions.

Choose which axis and ticks to change
By default, ax.tick_params() applies to both axes and major ticks. Set axis to 'x', 'y', or 'both', and set which to 'major', 'minor', or 'both' to narrow or broaden the change.

ax.tick_params(axis='y', which='minor', direction='in')This changes tick direction, not tick-label placement. Tick labels and which sides display ticks are controlled separately.
Keep other tick settings intact
A direction-only call leaves other tick properties unchanged unless you pass reset=True. Use that option only when you want Matplotlib to reset tick parameters before applying the settings in the call.

Set persistent direction defaults
To make direction the default for x- and y-axis ticks across plots, set the corresponding Matplotlib configuration values:
xtick.direction: in
ytick.direction: inThe configuration documentation lists 'out' as the shown setting and permits 'in', 'out', and 'inout'. See Matplotlib’s configuration and rcParams guide. Use ax.tick_params when you want to adjust a particular Axes rather than establish defaults.
