To change an LG refrigerator water filter, first identify the exact refrigerator model and compatible cartridge, then follow that model’s instructions for removing, installing, flushing, and resetting the filter. LG uses multiple filter designs, so the cartridge location, removal method, flush amount, and reset control can vary.
Find the right replacement filter first
Do not assume a filter fits just because its name resembles the one in your refrigerator. Check the refrigerator’s model number and the label on the existing cartridge, then confirm the replacement with LG’s Water & Air Filter Finder. The refrigerator model—not just the brand—determines compatibility.
LG lists several filter models, and the cartridge location also varies: it may be inside the refrigerator, near the bottom, or at the back. Use the owner’s manual for your exact model to find the filter and its replacement instructions. LG’s illustrated replacement guidance uses the LT1000P as an example, not as a universal procedure.
Change the cartridge
- Check your model’s instructions. Confirm where the filter is, how its housing opens, and whether the procedure calls for shutting off the water supply or power. LG’s procedures differ by model; do not assume either action is always required or unnecessary.
- Prepare the area. Place a towel or cup under the filter if the manual recommends it. Follow the manual’s directions for removing any cover or housing.
- Remove the old filter. Use the release, twist, or other mechanism specified for your refrigerator. In LG’s LT1000P example, the cartridge is turned counterclockwise; other designs may use a different mechanism.
- Fit the replacement. Remove packaging and protective covers as directed. Align the cartridge in the specified orientation, insert it into the housing or manifold, and secure it using the model’s locking mechanism. Do not force a cartridge that will not seat or lock.
- Flush the system and check for leaks. Dispense water for the amount or duration specified in your manual. Check the filter area for leaks as directed.
- Reset the filter indicator. Use the button and hold time named in your refrigerator’s instructions; reset controls are not identical across LG models.
Flush the water line as your model specifies
Flushing clears trapped air and contaminants after a cartridge change, but the required amount depends on the instructions you follow. In its LT1000P example, LG USA calls for dispensing 2.5 gallons. A separate manual for the LFXS24623 specifies approximately five minutes and includes a leak check. These are model-specific directions, not interchangeable universal rules.

Follow the exact instructions for your refrigerator rather than combining amounts or durations from different models. If the dispenser sputters after the change, continue only as directed by the manual.
Reset the filter light
The reset control and sequence vary by refrigerator. Find the reset directions in the owner’s manual for your model. For example, the LFXS24623 manual says to hold the LIGHT / WATER FILTER button for at least three seconds. That sequence should not be assumed to apply to other LG refrigerators.

LG’s U.A.E. support instructions, dated September 7, 2026, also describe a three-second hold for the models covered there. If the indicator does not reset, check the control labels and reset instructions in your own model’s manual.
When to replace the filter
LG says to replace the filter every six months or as indicated by the filter light. Treat that as general guidance: follow your refrigerator’s indicator and manual, and pay attention to changes such as slower dispensing. LG’s U.A.E. support article likewise advises checking sooner if water dispensing slows.

For slow dispensing, use the troubleshooting steps for your model. LG’s slow-water-dispensing guidance includes a procedure for a particular model that calls for shutting off water and power; those steps should not be generalized to every refrigerator.

- If the cartridge will not lock, remove it and recheck its compatibility, orientation, and the manual’s installation steps. Do not force it into the housing.
- If water leaks near the filter, follow the model manual’s directions for checking the installation and water connection. Stop using the dispenser if the leak continues and contact LG support or a qualified service provider.
- If you cannot identify the refrigerator model or the filter is absent from LG’s finder, use the model label and existing cartridge label when contacting LG support; do not guess at a substitute.
Some manuals also describe a bypass plug for use when a filter is not installed. For example, the LFXS24623 manual addresses a bypass plug; use one only if your model’s instructions specify it.
