To change a Samsung refrigerator water filter, first match the cartridge to your fridge model, then shut off the water, remove and replace the cartridge as its design requires, flush the new filter, check for leaks, and reset the reminder. Samsung models use different filters and controls, so the refrigerator’s manual or the number printed on the existing cartridge is the safest guide.
Choose the correct filter before you start
Samsung refrigerators do not all use the same cartridge. Check the refrigerator model number and its manual, or read the number printed on the installed filter. Samsung’s US and Canada guidance names HAF-CIN, HAF-QIN, and HAFCU1 among its filter types, but these are not universal replacements. Use Samsung’s filter finder or the instructions for your exact model to confirm compatibility before buying.
Samsung recommends genuine filters in its Canada guidance and warns that third-party filters may be unreliable; its US guidance cautions that filters from other manufacturers may damage the refrigerator or filter housing. These are manufacturer recommendations, not independent tests of every third-party cartridge.
Prepare the refrigerator
- Locate the filter compartment. Depending on the model, the filter may be inside the refrigerator near the upper right or lower down. Consult the manual if you cannot find it.
- Shut off the refrigerator’s water supply.
- Dispense water until the flow stops to relieve pressure. Place a towel under the filter compartment to catch drips.
Remove and install the cartridge
HAF-CIN and HAF-QIN
- Open the filter cover. Rotate the old cartridge counterclockwise to unlock it, then pull it straight out.
- Remove the protective cap from the new, matching cartridge. Push it into the housing and turn it clockwise until it locks. Check that the lock symbol aligns with the indicator line.
HAFCU1
- Twist the old cartridge left to unlock it, then pull it down.
- Remove the new filter’s protective cap. Push the cartridge up into the housing and twist it right until secure. Align the notch with the housing arrow.
Filter housings and procedures vary by model. If these steps do not match the compartment in your refrigerator, follow that model’s manual rather than forcing the cartridge.

Restore water, flush the filter, and check for leaks
- Turn the water supply back on.
- Dispense and discard water to flush the new cartridge. Samsung’s US instructions say to dispense several gallons. Samsung Canada’s guide, last updated May 16, 2026, specifies about seven minutes or 10–12 large glasses for the procedures it covers. Follow your model’s manual if it gives a different amount.
- Check that the cartridge is locked and inspect the compartment and nearby connections for leaks.
A little water may drip during replacement. If a leak continues, remove and reseat the filter. Samsung Canada notes that a damaged O-ring can cause persistent leakage; if reseating does not solve it, check the manual or contact Samsung support.
Reset the filter reminder
Reset the indicator after installing the replacement. On many standard models, Samsung says to hold the labeled Filter Reset control or a model-specific button for three seconds. Family Hub models use Fridge Manager settings, while some refrigerators require a menu option or button combination. Controls differ by model, so use the manual if the common reset control is absent or does not work.

Troubleshoot common problems
- The filter will not lock: Confirm that the cartridge matches the refrigerator, remove its protective cap, and check that it is aligned correctly before turning or pushing it into place.
- Water flow is still slow: Check that the cartridge is fully seated and locked. Dispensing more water may help clear air from the line.
- Water tastes unusual after replacement: Dispense and discard more water. Samsung says this can help flush air and carbon particles.
- The filter indicator will not reset: Follow the reset instructions for the exact model instead of repeating a button sequence from another refrigerator.
When to replace the filter
Samsung describes about six months as the replacement reminder interval, not as a direct test of water quality or a guarantee that every cartridge lasts that long. Its guidance says local water quality and usage can affect timing, and reduced flow can be another cue to replace the filter. Replace it according to your model’s instructions and the conditions in your home.
