On most Samsung Galaxy phones, open Settings > General management > Date and time. Turn on Automatic time zone to let the phone update its zone, or turn off the automatic controls and select a zone yourself. Menu names and available options can vary by model, market, and software version.
Set your time zone automatically
- Open Settings.
- Tap General management, then Date and time.
- Turn on Automatic time zone. Leave Automatic date and time on as well if you want the network to set the clock and date.
- If your phone offers Set time zone based on location, enable it to use location for zone detection.
Automatic date and time and automatic time zone control different things: one sets the clock and date, while the other sets the time zone. Samsung says a connected Galaxy device can use network settings for date, time, and zone; the described connection method varies across its regional support guidance. Android notes that location-based time-zone detection depends on device support. Samsung’s Galaxy date and time instructions and Google’s Android time-zone guidance explain the available controls.
Choose a time zone manually
- Go to Settings > General management > Date and time.
- Turn off Automatic date and time and Automatic time zone if those switches appear. Samsung says manual controls become available after automatic settings are disabled.
- Tap Select time zone, or Time zone on interfaces using that shorter label, and choose the region and zone that match the phone’s intended local time.
A manual selection chooses a time zone’s rules; it does not necessarily lock the phone to one fixed offset. Samsung says a selected zone continues to apply daylight-saving changes where those rules apply.

Change the clock to 24-hour format
To change how the time is displayed, open Settings > General management > Date and time and enable Use 24-hour format. This display preference works with either automatic or manual time settings, according to Samsung Support.

Fix time-zone settings that will not update
Manual controls are missing
Check whether Automatic date and time or Automatic time zone is still on. Samsung says automatic mode hides manual date and time controls; turn off the applicable automatic settings to reveal manual options.
The phone does not change zones while traveling
- Check that the phone has a network connection and that the automatic settings are enabled.
- If the zone still does not update, a carrier problem, travel between zones, or lack of internet connection may be involved. Samsung recommends setting the correct time temporarily if needed, then turning automatic date and time back on when service returns. - Automatic detection depends on the phone’s capabilities and available network or location signals. If your model does not offer the relevant automatic option, use manual selection.
The settings path or labels differ
Samsung notes that screens and settings can differ by market. Search Settings for Date and time, or consult the manual for your exact model and region. Samsung’s regional guidance, including its Canada support page, updated January 8, 2026, reflects that variation.

Why accurate time matters
Incorrect date or time can affect app and website behavior, trigger security warnings, and cause calendar notification problems. Samsung specifically warns that many apps and websites may not operate correctly when the date and time are inaccurate. If you use manual settings temporarily, return to automatic time when the connection or service issue is resolved if you want the phone to maintain its clock from network settings.
