Photoshop’s theme settings depend on which version you use. In the desktop app, open Preferences on Windows or Settings on macOS and look under Interface; Adobe’s desktop guide does not specify particular theme choices there. Photoshop on the web and mobile apps document Dark, Light, and Use system setting options.
Change preferences in Photoshop desktop
- Open Photoshop.
- Open the settings window: on Windows, choose Edit > Preferences; on macOS, choose Photoshop > Settings. You can also press Ctrl+K on Windows or Command+K on macOS.
- Select the category for the setting you want. Choose Interface for appearance and interface behavior, Workspace for workspace and panel behavior, or another relevant category.
- Change the option and select OK. Close Photoshop normally to save your changes.
Adobe identifies Interface as the desktop appearance category, but its current overview does not list desktop theme choices or confirm a setting that matches the operating system. The web and mobile choices below should not be assumed to appear in desktop Photoshop.
Theme settings in Photoshop on the web
- Open Main menu > Settings, or press Ctrl+K on Windows or Command+K on macOS.
- Under General, find Color theme and choose Dark, Light, or Use system setting.
The General settings also include interface size, language, and layer thumbnail size. Adobe’s Photoshop web settings guide describes the available theme options.
Theme settings in Photoshop mobile
- Open the app’s settings and go to General > Interface > Color theme.
- Choose Dark, Light, or Use system setting.
Adobe documents this route for iPhone and Android. Its cited mobile guide identifies the Android app as Beta. See Adobe’s Photoshop mobile preferences guide.

Reset Photoshop desktop preferences
Resetting preferences can remove your custom settings. Adobe documents two desktop methods:
Reset from General settings
- Open Preferences/Settings > General.
- Select Reset Preferences On Quit.
- Close Photoshop normally. The reset takes effect when you quit.
Reset at launch with a keyboard shortcut
- Close Photoshop.
- Relaunch while holding Alt+Ctrl+Shift on Windows or Option+Command+Shift on macOS.
- When prompted, confirm deletion of the Photoshop settings file.
Adobe also recommends backing up preference files before a manual reset. The folders differ by operating system: on Windows, look under the user’s AppDataRoamingAdobeAdobe Photoshop [version] Settings folder; on macOS, look under Library/Preferences/Adobe Photoshop [version] Settings. The Library folder is hidden by default. To reach it, hold Option while choosing Go in Finder. Follow Adobe’s desktop preferences and reset instructions for details.

Why preference changes may not be saved
Adobe says Photoshop saves settings when the app closes, but settings can be lost if you force-quit Photoshop or it crashes. After changing desktop preferences, quit normally rather than force-quitting.
