You can resize desktop icons using built-in controls: in Windows, choose an icon size from the desktop’s View menu or hold Ctrl and scroll the mouse wheel; on a Mac, adjust Icon size in View > Show View Options. Windows applies the change to desktop icons as a group, while macOS also lets you adjust grid spacing and label text separately.
Change desktop icon size in Windows 10 or Windows 11
Right-click an empty area of the desktop, select View, then choose Large icons, Medium icons, or Small icons. The setting changes the desktop icons together. These instructions are documented by Microsoft Support.
Resize with the mouse wheel
For a more gradual adjustment, click the desktop, hold Ctrl, and scroll the mouse wheel up or down. Microsoft describes this as a way to make the desktop icons larger or smaller. If your device does not have a mouse wheel, use the View menu presets instead.
Hide icons without resizing them
To clear the desktop temporarily, right-click an empty area, open View, and uncheck Show desktop icons. This hides the icons; it does not change their size.

Can you resize just one desktop icon in Windows?
No built-in Windows 11 control changes the size of a single desktop icon or shortcut independently. The View menu and Ctrl-plus-wheel adjustment apply to the desktop set. This limitation is described in a Microsoft-hosted community Q&A.
If one shortcut needs to stand out, practical alternatives are to resize all desktop icons, reposition or rename the shortcut, or choose a visually distinctive icon. Those options change its prominence, not its individual size.

Change desktop icon size on a Mac
In Finder, switch the desktop or folder to icon view, then choose View > Show View Options. Move the Icon size control to make the icons larger or smaller. Apple’s Mac User Guide also documents separate controls for grid spacing and label text size.
These options apply to the desktop or the Finder window whose view options you opened. Adjust the icon size for the view you want to change; use the grid-spacing control if the issue is how tightly icons are arranged rather than their visual size.

If the problem is readability, change text size or scaling
When icons are visible enough but labels or other interface text are hard to read, use text-size or display-scaling controls instead of—or in addition to—changing icon size. These settings can affect more of the interface than the desktop icons. Apple explains desktop and interface text adjustments in its Mac accessibility guidance; available controls vary by Finder view.
