On a Roku streaming player, go to Home > Settings > Display type, choose an available resolution and frame-rate option, then confirm the picture when it returns. The Roku player may briefly show a black screen while applying the change.
Change the display type on a Roku streaming player
- Press Home on your Roku remote.
- Open Settings.
- Select Display type.
- Choose an available option and press OK.
- Wait for the picture to return. If you can see it, select Yes, I can see it and press OK. A checkmark indicates the active setting.
Roku’s display type instructions apply to Roku streaming players. If you have a Roku TV, use the guide for your specific television model rather than assuming its menus are identical.
What the display type setting changes
Display type combines the video resolution and frame rate sent from the player to the TV. During setup, the Roku player checks the HDMI connection to identify supported options. Roku says the automatic setting is appropriate for most situations; choose an option manually if the player has not detected the TV’s capabilities correctly.

#1 Best Overall
- Ultra-speedy streaming: Roku Ultra is 30% faster than any other Roku player, delivering a lightning-fast interface and apps that launch in a snap.
- Cinematic streaming: This TV streaming device brings the movie theater to your living room with spectacular 4K, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision picture alongside immersive Dolby Atmos audio.
- The ultimate Roku remote: The rechargeable Roku Voice Remote Pro offers backlit buttons, hands-free voice controls, and a lost remote finder.
- No more fumbling in the dark: See what you’re pressing with backlit buttons.
- Say goodbye to batteries: Keep your remote powered for months on a single charge.
If you expected the TV to support the option—particularly for 4K or HDR—check the whole HDMI connection path. Roku’s HDCP 2.2 guidance identifies support throughout the connection chain as important for 4K/HDR playback.
- Make sure HDMI cables are firmly connected and each link supports the required connection. Roku recommends Premium High Speed HDMI cables for the links in a 4K/HDR setup.
- Connect the player to a suitable HDCP 2.2 input on the TV. If an AVR is in the path, temporarily connect the Roku directly to a suitable TV input to check whether the AVR is involved.
- Check the TV’s settings for the HDMI input in use. Some TVs require HDR to be enabled for that input.
For model-specific setup details, see Roku’s streaming player setup guide. A compatible cable may matter when the existing HDMI chain does not support 4K/HDR, but changing the Display type setting itself does not require buying a cable, and a new cable is not a guaranteed fix.
