To change when Windows conserves power automatically, choose a battery percentage in Settings. In Windows 11, go to Start > Settings > System > Power & battery > Energy saver. In Windows 10, go to Start > Settings > System > Battery. The feature is built into Windows, so you do not need another app.
Change the threshold in Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings > System > Power & battery.
- Expand Energy saver.
- Next to Turn energy saver on when battery level is at, select the battery level you want. Microsoft’s Windows battery-saving guidance documents this setting.
Windows 11 calls the feature Energy saver; its threshold is in the expandable Energy saver section, not on a separate Battery page.
Change the threshold in Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings > System > Battery.
- Under the automatic Battery saver setting, select Turn battery saver on automatically if my battery falls below, then choose the level you want. Microsoft documents the Windows 10 setting on the same support page as its Windows 11 instructions.
Windows 10 retains the name Battery saver, and its Settings path differs from Windows 11.
Turn the feature on without waiting for the threshold
Windows 11
To keep Energy saver on regardless of the selected threshold, enable Always use energy saver in the Energy saver section. To switch it on immediately, use the Energy saver control in taskbar Quick Settings. Microsoft’s instructions cover both options.

Windows 10
To enable Battery saver until the next charge, select Battery saver status until next charge in Settings > System > Battery, as described in Microsoft’s guidance.
What changing the threshold does
The threshold determines when the power-saving feature switches on automatically as the battery level falls. When it is on, Windows temporarily turns off some power-consuming functions, including automatic email and calendar syncing, live tile updates, and apps you are not actively using. Microsoft Support explains these effects.

Microsoft does not prescribe one universally best threshold in its cited guidance. Choose a level that suits when you want these power-saving changes to begin.
Windows 10 support status
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says it no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10 after that date. The setting steps above may still help people using Windows 10, but the operating system is no longer supported. See Microsoft’s power mode support page for the support-status information.
