To change a row’s height or a column’s width in Google Sheets, select its row number or column letter, open the context menu, choose Resize row or Resize column, and enter a size or select Fit to data. You can also drag the boundary between headers for a visual adjustment; on a computer, double-click the boundary to fit to data.
Choose how to resize
| Method | Best for | How it works |

| Fit to data | Using the built-in content-fitting option | Select Fit to data in the resize dialog. The option fits the dimension to its contents; it does not promise a particular numerical size. |
| Drag | Making a quick visual adjustment | Drag the boundary between row numbers or column letters. On a computer, double-click the boundary to fit to data. |
Change row height or column width on a computer
- Select the row number to change height, or the column letter to change width. To resize several at once, select their row numbers or column letters.
- Right-click one of the selected headers and choose Resize row or Resize column.
- Enter the custom height or width, or choose Fit to data.
- Confirm the change.
For a visual adjustment instead, drag the boundary between row numbers to change row height, or between column letters to change column width. Double-click the relevant boundary to fit to data.
These controls apply to whole rows and columns, not to an individual cell: rows determine height, while columns determine width. Google’s computer instructions are in Add or move columns and cells — Computer.

Resize rows or columns in the Android app
- Touch and hold the row or column you want to change.
- Choose Resize row or Resize column.
- Enter the dimension and tap Save.
You can also select a row or column and drag its edge to adjust it. See Google’s Android instructions.

Resize with a keyboard or screen reader
- Select the row or column.
- Press Shift + F10 to open its context menu.
- Navigate to the resize option and choose a custom height or width, or move to Fit to data.
- Tab to OK and confirm.
