In Ableton Live 12, press X to move the computer keyboard’s playable range up one octave and Z to move it down. These keys only respond once the Computer MIDI Keyboard feature is switched on, so turn that on first.
Turn on the Computer MIDI Keyboard
Live converts computer keystrokes into MIDI notes only while the Computer MIDI Keyboard is active. You can enable it in any of three ways:
- Click the Computer MIDI Keyboard button in the Control Bar.
- Open the Options menu and choose the Computer MIDI Keyboard entry.
- Press M to toggle the feature on or off.
The shortcut reference lists M, X, Z, C, and V under both Windows and macOS columns, so these keys are the same on either platform in Live 12. Ableton Live 12: Live Keyboard Shortcuts
Shift the octave range
- Make sure the Computer MIDI Keyboard is active.
- Press X to move the playable range up one octave.
- Press Z to move it down one octave.
- Play a few notes on the letter rows to confirm the new range. The center letter row plays the white-key notes, beginning at C3, and the row above it plays the black keys.
Each press moves the range by one octave. Repeat the key to go further.

Keep the related controls separate
Several nearby functions are often confused with octave shifting. The table below separates them.
| Task | Key or setting | What it changes |
|---|---|---|
| Move the computer keyboard’s playable range | X (up) and Z (down) | The octave range the computer keys play, while the Computer MIDI Keyboard is active |
| Change note velocity from the computer keyboard | C and V | Incoming velocity, not pitch or octave |
| Transpose incoming MIDI notes | Transpose MIDI effect | Shifts pitch by up to ±36 semitones, a separate effect in Live’s MIDI effect chain |
The Transpose effect is documented in the Ableton Live 12: Live MIDI Effect Reference. It changes the pitch of notes passing through a track; it does not move the range of the computer keyboard, so it will not help if the letter keys play in the wrong octave.

Troubleshooting
- Keys do not play notes: the Computer MIDI Keyboard is off. Turn it on with the Control Bar button, the Options menu, or M.
- Keys trigger interface actions instead of notes: enabling the Computer MIDI Keyboard can take over keys that Live otherwise uses for interface controls. Turn the feature off when you are not playing, then turn it back on to play.
- Pressing X or Z changes nothing audible: confirm the Computer MIDI Keyboard is active and that the selected track can receive MIDI, then play a note to check the new range.
- Notes sound too high or low after the change: the octave shift only affects the computer keyboard. If a track’s notes are shifted, check for a Transpose effect on that track.
Version note
These steps are checked against Ableton’s Live 12 online reference manual and shortcut list, as of October 2026. Shortcuts can change in later Live versions, so confirm them in the shortcut list for your release if the keys do not respond as described.
