To change Night light strength in Windows 11, open Settings > System > Display > Night light and move the Strength slider. Moving the slider toward the warmer end increases the amount of blue light the display reduces. Microsoft describes the slider as controlling the intensity of blue-light reduction, so it changes how warm the screen looks rather than how bright it is.
Adjust the Strength slider
- Open Settings from the Start menu or by pressing Windows key + I.
- Select System, then Display.
- Select Night light. If the section is collapsed, expand it.
- Move the Strength slider until the screen has the amount of warmth you prefer. Night light applies its effect immediately, so you can compare settings while you drag.
Microsoft does not publish a numeric scale or a recommended position for the slider. There is no fixed value that is correct for everyone, so judge the result by eye. Work in the lighting and at the time of day you normally use the computer, because the same setting looks stronger in a dim room than in a bright one.
Turn Night light on, off, or on a schedule
The Night light toggle sits at the top of the same Display page. You can also switch it on or off from the taskbar: select the Network or Speakers icon to open quick settings, then use the Night light tile. Changing the strength does not require the feature to be on, but you will only see the effect while it is enabled.
To have Windows turn Night light on automatically, open the Night light settings page and enable Schedule night light. Then choose one of two options:

- 1.1 GHz (boost up to 2.4GHz) Intel Celeron N5030 Quad-Core
- Sunset to sunrise follows the local sunset and sunrise times that Windows determines for your location.
- Set hours lets you enter a custom start and end time.
If the schedule seems to run at the wrong time, check that the time zone and location in Windows are correct before adjusting the hours.
Troubleshooting when the slider does not work
Most problems fall into one of the cases below. Microsoft’s Windows display support article is the source for these causes and remedies.

- 256 GB SSD of storage.
- Multitasking is easy with 16GB of RAM
- Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.
- Night light is unavailable. Microsoft says the feature is not supported with certain display drivers, including DisplayLink and Basic Display. If you use one of these, install a standard driver for your graphics hardware from the manufacturer, then check the setting again.
- The Night light toggle is grayed out. Microsoft says the display driver may need an update. Update the graphics driver through Device Manager or from the graphics manufacturer’s website, restart, and check again.
- An HDR display looks red-tinted or oversaturated. Microsoft says the appearance depends on the strength setting. Lower the Strength slider. If the problem remains, turn Night light off to confirm that it is the cause.
Strength is not the same as brightness
Night light strength adjusts color temperature. It does not change how bright the display is. If the screen is too dim or too bright, use the brightness control in the same Display settings page or the brightness control on your monitor. Microsoft documents external monitor brightness as a function of the monitor’s own controls, so changing Night light will not affect that setting.

Microsoft’s support article states that warmer colors are easier on the eyes and suggests that blue light may keep some people awake at night. Those are Microsoft’s statements. Some people also find that Night light makes long evening sessions more comfortable even when they do not notice a sleep effect, so the Strength slider is a matter of personal preference.
Users searching for this topic often phrase it as “adjust Night light strength,” “make Night light less orange,” or “Night light toggle grayed out.” The steps above apply to all of these.
