To change keyboard settings on a Samsung tablet, open Settings, search for Samsung Keyboard, and select it. You can also open Samsung Keyboard’s settings from its gear icon while the keyboard is on screen. From there, adjust options such as language, predictions, toolbar, appearance, and keyboard mode. Menu names and available controls vary by tablet, region, and software version.
How do I open Samsung Keyboard settings?
- Open the tablet’s Settings app.
- Tap the search icon or search field, enter Samsung Keyboard, and open the matching result.
If the on-screen keyboard is open, tap its Settings gear icon for a shortcut. Samsung notes that available screens and settings can vary by wireless service provider and software version, so use the tablet’s Settings search if a menu path differs. How do I add or switch keyboard languages?
Add or download a language
In Settings, search for Manage input languages. Enable a language that is already downloaded, or choose a language from the available-language list to download it. On some software versions, the route is Language and input → On-screen keyboard → Samsung Keyboard → Languages and types → Manage input languages. Labels and paths can differ by region and software version.

After enabling the language, open the keyboard in an app and swipe left or right on the spacebar, or tap the language icon if it appears. Samsung documents both methods. Samsung’s Canadian language instructions show the language-management and switching options.

How do I change the keyboard mode?
With Samsung Keyboard open in an app, tap its Settings icon, then tap Mode. Samsung lists these tablet modes:

| Standard | Shows the regular full-width QWERTY keyboard. | Choose it for a familiar full-width layout. |
| Split | Places one half of the keyboard on each side of the tablet. | Consider it when holding a wide tablet and typing with both hands. |
| Floating | Shows a keyboard that you can move around the screen. | Consider it when the keyboard covers content you need to see. |
The modes change how the keyboard is arranged; Samsung does not claim that one is objectively faster or better. Samsung’s keyboard mode instructions describe the same options.

These are possible controls, not a guarantee that every Galaxy tablet includes every feature. Writing Assist is also not available on all Galaxy tablets; Samsung’s U.S. guide specifies compatible tablets running Android 14 and One UI 6.1.1 or later.

How do I erase learned predictions or reset the keyboard?
If you want to remove personalized predictions, Samsung gives this path: Settings → General management → Samsung Keyboard settings → Reset to default settings → Erase personalized predictions. This removes learned predictions; it is different from clearing keyboard app data.
Clearing Samsung Keyboard data erases its settings and saved words. If the keyboard is malfunctioning rather than simply configured differently, follow Samsung’s keyboard troubleshooting guidance, which covers options such as setting Samsung Keyboard as default, optimizing the device, restarting, clearing cache or data, updating software, and using Safe mode. Treat clearing data as a reset with consequences, not a routine first step; a factory reset erases device data.

How do I select a different keyboard app?
You do not need another app to customize Samsung Keyboard. If you do want a different keyboard, install one from Google Play, then open Settings and search for Keyboard list and default. Enable the keyboard in the list and choose it under Default keyboard. Exact labels may vary by software version.
Does my tablet need a physical keyboard cover?
No. A keyboard cover is optional and is not needed to change on-screen keyboard settings. Samsung’s U.S. guide lists model-specific Book Cover Keyboard options, including options for Tab S10 and S9 series, Tab A9+, and some compatible Tab S8 and S7 models. It also states that Galaxy Tab A8 does not have a keyboard cover. Check the exact tablet model and accessory compatibility before buying; a cover for another Galaxy Tab may not fit.
