Windows 11 does not provide one universal keyboard-backlight slider. The available controls depend on the exact laptop or keyboard: its hardware, firmware, BIOS/UEFI settings, manufacturer software, and—in the case of compatible RGB peripherals—Windows Dynamic Lighting.
Start by looking for a key showing a glowing keyboard icon. If your keyboard has no backlight symbol and the computer’s specifications do not mention a backlit keyboard, the model may not support illumination at all.
Use the keyboard’s backlight shortcut
On most laptops, the fastest way to change the backlight is to press the key marked with the keyboard-illumination symbol. Press it repeatedly to cycle through the available settings, commonly Off, Dim, and Bright.

Depending on the laptop, press the key by itself or hold Fn while pressing it. If one combination does nothing, try the other. The top-row keys may also be affected by Fn Lock, Action Key mode, or a similar function-row setting.

These shortcuts are examples, not universal commands. Even two laptops from the same manufacturer can use different keys or provide different brightness levels.
Change RGB lighting with Windows Dynamic Lighting
Windows 11 includes Dynamic Lighting for compatible keyboards, mice, and other RGB devices that support the HID LampArray standard. This is primarily useful for compatible external gaming peripherals. It does not automatically control every built-in laptop keyboard.
- Open Settings.
- Select Personalization.
- Select Dynamic Lighting.
- Choose the detected keyboard or lighting device.
- Adjust Brightness and Effects.
You can open the page directly by pressing Win + R, entering the following URI, and pressing Enter:

- Use Dynamic Lighting on my devices — enables or disables Windows control.
- Compatible apps in the foreground always control lighting — lets an active game or other supported application take priority.
- Background light control — sets the priority of registered lighting applications.
- Brightness — changes the LED brightness.
- Effects — selects colors and lighting patterns.
If the keyboard does not appear in Dynamic Lighting, having LEDs is not enough. The device must expose a compatible HID LampArray interface or work through a compatible driver. Many laptop keyboards use an embedded controller or the manufacturer’s utility instead.

If the device appears but Windows changes have no effect, open Settings > Personalization > Dynamic Lighting, expand Background light control, and move the relevant controller higher in the priority list. Another RGB application may be overriding Windows.
Use the manufacturer’s Windows application
Some laptops provide backlight controls through the manufacturer’s software rather than ordinary Windows settings. Depending on the model, the application may control colors, effects, automatic brightness, brightness levels, or the amount of time the backlight stays on.
- ASUS: MyASUS may include Automatic keyboard backlight and Keyboard backlight sleep mode. The options depend on the model and may require ASUS System Control Interface.
- HP: Some notebooks let you change the backlight duration through the backlight key or related HP controls. Supported choices may include 30 seconds, 3 minutes, or Always.
- Gaming laptops: Utilities such as OMEN Gaming Hub and Armoury Crate may control RGB colors, zones, brightness, and effects.
Download the utility for your exact model from the manufacturer’s support page. Avoid assuming that an application designed for one laptop family will control another.
Check BIOS or UEFI settings
Some computers can enable or disable the keyboard backlight before Windows loads. This is particularly useful when the shortcut is not working or a Windows utility is missing.
Dell BIOS steps
- Shut down the computer.
- Turn it on and repeatedly press F2 when the Dell logo appears.
- Select Keyboard.
- Under Keyboard Illumination, choose Disabled, Dim, or Bright.
- Select Apply Changes, then select Exit.
On older Dell BIOS versions, the setting may be under System Configuration > Keyboard Illumination. Some systems also provide Keyboard Backlight with AC, which controls behavior while the charger is connected.

Other manufacturers use different menu names and locations. If a Keyboard Illumination option is absent, the system may not have a backlit keyboard or may expose the control only through its hotkey or Windows utility.
Why the backlight dims or turns off
A backlight that changes by itself is not necessarily faulty. Common causes include:
- An ambient-light sensor automatically adjusting brightness.
- Battery-saving behavior reducing or disabling illumination.
- A timeout that turns the LEDs off after inactivity.
- An OEM utility overriding Windows or another RGB application.
- The keyboard restoring its previous brightness after a restart.
- A convertible disabling the keyboard in tablet, tent, or stand mode.
Some HP models, for example, turn the backlight off after 30 seconds and provide duration choices of 30 seconds, 3 minutes, or Always. The available options depend on the product.
Microsoft documents OEM power behavior through settings such as BacklightEnergySaverEnabled, BacklightEnergySaverMultiplier, and EnableBucketedBacklightAutobrightness. These are deployment and OEM configuration settings, not general-purpose switches exposed in the normal Windows 11 Settings app.
Fix a keyboard backlight that does not work
1. Confirm that the exact model supports backlighting
Check the full model number on the laptop’s underside, in its support application, or in Settings > System > About. Product families often include both backlit and non-backlit configurations. Do not rely only on the family name.

2. Try the shortcut with and without Fn
Press the key with the backlight icon alone, then repeat it while holding Fn. Check whether Fn Lock or Action Key mode changes the result. The backlight icon may be on an F key, an arrow key, Spacebar, or another key depending on the manufacturer.
3. Install the correct system-control software
If the backlight worked before reinstalling Windows, a missing hotkey or system-interface driver is a likely cause. Install the model-specific BIOS, chipset, hotkey, system-control, and manufacturer utility packages from the PC maker. HP systems may require HP Hotkey Support or the applicable HP Wireless Button Driver; other brands use their own packages.
4. Update the BIOS or UEFI
Manufacturers sometimes fix keyboard-hotkey and embedded-controller problems through BIOS updates. Use the support page for the exact model and follow its power and backup instructions before updating.
5. Test the backlight outside Windows
Check whether the light works at the manufacturer logo, in BIOS/UEFI, or in the built-in hardware diagnostics. If it works before Windows starts but not after sign-in, investigate drivers, OEM utilities, and RGB software. If it fails in BIOS or diagnostics as well, hardware or firmware is more likely than a Windows setting.

- Windows 11 cannot add backlighting to a keyboard that was manufactured without illuminated keys.
- There is no universal keyboard-brightness slider in Windows 11.
- Dynamic Lighting does not control every built-in laptop backlight.
- Windows Mobility Center does not always include a keyboard-brightness control.
- A registry tweak cannot universally force any keyboard to remain illuminated.
For normal laptop backlights, use the manufacturer’s key, firmware, or utility. Use Dynamic Lighting when the keyboard explicitly supports the Windows-compatible lighting standard.

Practical order to follow
- Find the exact laptop or keyboard model.
- Confirm that its specifications list a backlit keyboard.
- Press the key with the backlight icon, both with and without Fn.
- Check Fn Lock or Action Key mode.
- Install the manufacturer’s hotkey and system-control software.
- Check the manufacturer’s application and BIOS/UEFI.
- For compatible RGB peripherals, open Settings > Personalization > Dynamic Lighting.
- If the light still fails, test it in BIOS/UEFI or hardware diagnostics.

Does Windows 11 have a keyboard backlight setting?
Not for every keyboard. Windows 11 has Settings > Personalization > Dynamic Lighting for compatible RGB devices, but ordinary laptop backlights are usually controlled by a hardware key, BIOS/UEFI, firmware, or the manufacturer’s software.
